    When I (1956) was young, even kindergarten was optional. There was no preschool, except some "kinderopvang".
    I can't remember about books and pencils for elementary school. I do remember buying and wrapping my books. But things have changed this century.
    Weather: the Netherlands have a sea climate with summers and winters rather mild (compared to my perception of Polish and Russian winters). - Note to self: I must remember to watch more from the Backyard Russia channel: a young Australian family living in Siberia (Irkutsk, I think).

    The first (and last (or very last)) day of school can be very different at schools in small villages. My ex-girlfriend came from a small village and her primary-school experience was nothing compared to mine (I'm from a small city). When her school was in desperate need of more classrooms, they just cleared out the attic of the building they were in for 'group' 6 and 7.
    Group 8 was moved to the nearby cafe for the time being. That would have never happened in my city and would usually lead to questions towards the council, if there was a possibility to drop a few emergency-classrooms anywhere. Especially relocating one complete class to a cafe was most likely completely out of the question.
    When I go on holiday in Winterswijk, I read the local newspaper. Over the years, I have seen far more festivities at the primary schools there than at mine. Whether it is for the first day of school, the last day, or the very last day of primary school. Especially the last can be filled in completely different across the country: performing a musical for your parents and all the teachers and so is very common in many schools, but I have read about schools where there is no musical, but kids jump from the window of the directors' office (don't worry, all from ground zero ;) ). The jump symbolises their step into that great big world, towards their new, bigger school.
    Sometimes, when the temperatures go way up, they will include a pool to land in, otherwise they just jump out onto the playground.

    In secondary school you will need to buy the things you mention (pen, books, excercise books, etc). Can be expensive. The lunch looked delicious, but to Dutch people a bit overdone, haha. We usually eat a few sandwiches with cheese of hagelslag and drink milk for lunch. That's all. But maybe you don't eat a warm meal at dinner?

    • @expatfamilylive9041
      @expatfamilylive9041  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your comment, Ronald! Yes, we prefer a solid lunch and those sandwiches can go for dinner ;)

      Slavic people like warm meals ;) I had a hard time when I visited Kyiv and breakfast, lunch ánd diner was usually a warm meal. I was glad when I finally found Lviv Croissants, as I at least could get a lunch that could be still warm from the croissant that had just been freshly baked, but wasn't a fully cooked meal. And trust me that most Slavic people know how to cook ;)

    Hey Marina and Dima, Yes it is an exciting adventure to have your kids go to school in your new home country :-) It is a very peculiar situation. It's a pity you can not understand Dutch because if you could you should watch the series "De Luizenmoeder" on Dutch TV :-) It is a parody on the issues at school and the parents of kids in primary school.. Very educational ;-)
    In Belgium (where I live) primary schools are very different to the Dutch system. Kids can go to the "Kinderspeelzaal" at 2,5 years old, then at 4 to kleuterklassen and at 6 to Primary school (like it used to be in The Netherlands) In Flanders primary schools always start the 1rst of September even if it is in the middle of the week. And there are still a good number of schools with an uniform. Compared to Dutch schools Belgian schools are a lot more disciplinary! Even so in Secondary schools! There is no talking in the class, the lunch items that you can bring to school are restricted, there is much more homework and there is a penalty system that in extremis can lead to be excluded from school. No... there is no physical punishment ;-)
    But having to sweep the school play yard ... staying late in school etc..
    I would suggest to make a video about the food timeplan your family has (the Russian/Polish way) compared to the Dutch food traditions. As you probably know in The netherlands there is usually a few sandwiches as breakfast, a few sandwiches as lunch at 12 - 13 and at 6 there is warm dinner. I noticed that in some Polish and Russian families there are different timings for having food and also the time to have warm food is different. Can you explain in more details? Some of my Slavic friends are having a warm lunch but at 3 or 4 in the afternoon..
    Always nice to see new videos frm you guys :-)

      Hi, Hans, thank you for your comment 🙏 And thank you for the idea to cover the food topic :) we always have a porridge in the morning, warm and solid. Also at 12 we can have sandwiches 🥪 , the lunch is around 3-4 p.m. and it is also hot and solid, like soup or vegetable stew or baked fish with side dishes. In this case we have a light dinner with yogurt.
