    Fun idea for the speed run if you'll take the suggestion, use the same openings that you actually used on your own climb to where you are at their appropriate rankings.

      The price of chess boards varies wildly though. You could pay hundreds to thousands for a very old chess board that has little aesthetic but a lot of age or $15 for a harry potter themed toy chess set.

    • @gamemak0r
      @gamemak0r ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Making self-moving pieces/chess sets is very difficult and often the solution involves each piece having metal base or magnet and an electro-magnet (a magnet that can be switched on and off with electricity) will be inside the board moving to a piece, magnetically attracting it, then moving along the board.
      Overall it is a complicated and expensive solution that doesn't always look good because you have to create a system for the pieces like the knight which can jump over other pieces.

    This board might make short time controls unplayable due to the time spent physically moving the pieces. Even at longer time controls time scrambles would be very problematic. It's even worse than regular OTB because of the time spent moving the opponent's pieces plus any lag in the board reporting your moves and recording your opponent's moves.

    • @captain_britain

      Bf6 is also winning. The bishop can't be taken because the king is in check from the rook. The only legal move is to block the rook with the queen. If the queen goes to g2 or g4, then the rook capturing the queen is immediately checkmate. If the queen goes to g3, you can either play Rxg3 forcing hxg3 from black and then checkmate with Qg5#. Or after Qg3 from black, you can do what Eric described at 12:25- forcing the queen trade and mating with the rook.

    Physical chess pieces? You mean you have to use your hands? That’s like a baby’s toy!

    This is a ~much~ better setup, (visually on YT) particularly for long form (rapid, classic etc) games. [smile]

    I wish Eric would have opined on that feature of touching a piece and the board showing the legal moves. I'm guessing he'd discourage that. Visualizing legal moves in one's mind is an important skill. Is it even something they can be turned off with this board?

    • @joekinggamer2873
      @joekinggamer2873 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't see it as an issue because you're not sitting there touching every piece to see the legal moves

    • @plebiain
      @plebiain ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you want to develop that skill you can just not touch the pieces until it's time to move them. Same with on your computer

      @@plebiain true. For youngsters who are prone to give in to temptation, hopefully it's an option that can be turned off.

    Isn't there a board that moves the oponents pieces?

    • @rinyw8314
      @rinyw8314 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think so, it would be hard to capture automatically, and also knight moves would be difficult

      That's a different company, SquareOff. But I honestly wouldn't recommend it until they get the software on the thing just right because right now it can get a bit screwy.

      there are a few actually, some a bit old that work with apps, but only vs computer, and I think I saw one recently that you could play online but, it was really ugly, masive board, tinny pieces EDit: just saw another coment below, check this one "PHANTOM chessboards" they aint for sale yet but aparently the will come soon, and it dosn't look that bad tbh

    • @plebiain
      @plebiain ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah those exist. Some are pretty good too. They all sometimes knock over pieces and are a bit slow though.

      @@lrvz7187 Thanks mate, yeah the proportions/sizes of the pieces to the board seems to be the main issue. If somebody has made one that works quickly and does not look clunky, I would buy it.
