Coast to Coast Iron Butt Challenge on Yamaha FJR1300 - DAY TWO

  • 2529 miles total from El Segundo CA to Jacksonville Beach FL on an Eagle Rider 2021 #YamahaFJR1300 also known as the 50CC ride from the Iron Butt Association (coast to coast under 50 hours) at the end of January 2022.
All I wanted for my birthday this year was to ride. But of course my brain didn’t stop there… I knew this challenge was going to be difficult but I didn’t realize just how much. It took so much effort, I am unbelievably sore, beyond tired, and just plain exhausted from this ride. The temps dropped down to 28 not only the first night but also the second night. I endured 45mph+ wind gusts all through AZ-TX. I worked with what I have, which mean a really small peanut tank bag and my comms for navigation. My Lexin lasted the entire trip with the battery life under 15% when I pulled into the hotel. I was extremely lucky after striking a large cardboard type box deflected off a semi just hours into start and a patch of black ice at one of my gas station stops.
It wasn’t an easy ride, but I’m glad I accomplished what I set out to do. Physically one of the hardest rides to date, and tested my mental strength. I have a lot of lessons learned to take into my next long distance ride attempt. Thanks for tuning in and make sure to subscribe for more moto-related content!

Holy smoke ! Whit I haven't looked at any of your videos since you started traveling on the Harley ADV bike. I didn't realize you'd joined the ranks of the FJR enthusiasts. I have one myself, and in fact commented about it a long time ago on one of your videos. I hope my experiences with my 2013 FJR1300a helped you make that decision, if it had positive results. My bike is coming up on 67,000 trouble-free miles, and her and I are still in love. She is my Japanese mistress after all.

@@whitmeza I suppose I should have watched the whole video before commenting, Whit. I'm sorry you didn't have the same pleasant experience with the FJR that I do. In fairness to the machine, and many have sold other bikes and gone to or came back to the FJR, I put a Sargent Saddle and bar risers on mine, and the bar risers for me was what made a big difference. I've got nearly 67,000 miles on my 2013 FJR now, and really enjoy it. My travels though don't hold a candle to what you've done on motorcycles. Wow ! As always keep the rubber side down.

Dehydration is a dangerous thing, especialy when you're pushing your body. Maybe consider adding electrolytes to your water intake. Keeps me fitter and more alert when riding longer trips. 🙂

A suggestion for hydration is pedialyte sport packets. You can add them to any bottle of water you get and they really saved my butt on my ride out to Sturgis and back, including a brutally hot day in the Badlands when I thought I was going to pass out with no place around to get out of the sun and cool off.

This goes with my comment on the first video. The biggest part of selling my FJR was the riding position. For me it put the bike too much into the sport aspect of sport touring. My knees would cramp up and I would get headaches from my neck position. Age and previous neck problems don’t help. I can ride long and hard day after day on a touring or adventure bike.

Cause you were physically and emotionally exhausted just to say you did it. When you already knew that you could. You have nothing to prove. You've already done more than most 😁😁

I have to say after watching this video again and realizing you'll probably never see this comment... You need to take the FJR out again on another sort of ride.. one where you are not exhausted and maybe one where it has a better windscreen and you have better clothing to protect you from the element's.. you were tired and cranky and had a very bad attitude the whole way and I feel in some ways you push that on the bike and I don't think you're right would have been any better on the Harley that you obviously much prefer... So maybe you should see if you can get your hands on another one for a one-day ride out there I'm not talking to iron but maybe you go out for 3 or 4 hours and see what you think with a fresher attitude

Whit, I love your video's but not this one. I didn't like seeing you so stressed out and in pain. You are an amazing lady and I love you but you may be a little crazy. One thing surprised me, I thought those FJR1300 were supposed to be outstanding long distance bikes. I have seen many of them on my travels. That one just didn't fit you and I am sorry for your pain and discomfort.

Thanks Jim. It was a hard one for me to accomplish. Not all are going to be easy. I heard the same thing wit. The FJR. But that bike just wasn’t fit for me stock like others have been.

I HATE Eagle Rider! Rip off rental is their real name.

Awe that’s unfortunate you feel that way.

@@whitmeza I agree. I wish they didn't cause me to feel this way. I had thousands of dollars of credits built up in my account and walked away from it because they made it so impossible to use them in any way. I am a non-HD rider.
