Wow Vobey... that's your best vid since the one you did last year on Sunday morning when you wispered to not disturb people sleeping---that was your best short format video you ever did, but this was close. Much enjoyed.

The Victorians did save a lot of old buildings, thankfully.

They did - we often moan about their work, but they did save the churches from collapse in many cases.

That's correct Richard, one bell. Cast in 1800 by Rudhall weighing approximately 5cwt

Im not sure how I ended up here but I got married in that church. A point of interest, if you have a beer next door the table that you're sat at might have been an old mortuary block for dressing bodies.

What a splendid church. I wonder how in times before sound systems, anyone in the nave heard the priest when they were at the altar with all those arches in the way!

old shoreham I know due to my knowledge of the arrival of the Saxons and push West.it was said AELLE landed near there in around 477 - 514 AD with his 3 sons after battles against the Britons.he became the first saxon king of the South Saxons...however they now think the landing took place elsewhere possibly Selsey if I remember correct..the Anglo-saxon chronicle says he laid siege to the Roman fort at Pevensey wiping out the opposing Britons who lived there. Also though its rather unlikely some have thought he met his end just outside BATH.i don't know if you noticed as you approached the GEORGE theres a rather big hill across the other side of the river not to far away..thats Solsbury hill the one peter gabrial titled one of his songs.its also the assumed site of a great famous battle where the Saxons was heavily defeated..ALLE some think led the Saxon army that was defeated by the Britons led by an Anglo-Roman named Ambrosius on the hill which is believed to be Mount Badon.the battle was the last decisive one won by the Briton.Ambrosius itS thought maybe the basis for KING ARTHUR ...its the 12th battle in the list of ones he fought and there in the earliest source to mention Arthur it said in one charge by Arthur and no-one else...he did slay 960 Saxons lol finally its also according to monty python in the quest for the holy grail.the site of one of the many "feats" of Sir Robin, who is said to have "personally wet himself at the Battle of Badon hill lol click link to see picture of Solsbury..hill...which you are able to see quite easily as you approach BATH and the George on a narrowboat and Canal . upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/21/Little_Solsbury_Hill_viewed_from_Bathford__-geograph.org.uk-__135665.jpg

I didn't notice the hill. We were so looking forward to the meal at the George (which disappointed) that all else went unobserved. Interesting stuff as always, Shaun.

Unfortunately there isn’t any bell ringing in this church, there is only one bell in the tower. However in the newer church (St Mary de Haura) there are 8 bells

The name "Adur" was an invention by Dryden but unfortunately it stuck - but not entirely. At school in Shoreham in the 50's we knew it as the "Shoreham river". It could well have been the river "Soar" - hence Soarham, or Shoreham. Soar is a well known old Anglo-Saxon name and the river Soar is a tributary of the Tent and is the principle river in Leicestershire. Another version of the typical river name is Stour and all are derived from the root ser- "to flow" which probably included the river Seine (France). The church; the Anglo-Saxon nave walls still survive as does the "stump" of the A-S west tower, the rest of the work is of Norman date. At nearby Botolphs upriver is the Anglo-Saxon church with its west tower and still sporting some long & short quoins, an Anglo-Saxon feature. The more famous A-Saxon tower at Sompting is a few miles west overlooking the sea from a distance; more recently a double-splayed A-Saxon window was discovered in the western part of the south wall of the nave, so as at Shoreham the nave walls also survive there. Readily identifiable as such A-Saxon walls are generally thinner at about 2 foot six (and better built than the Norman), but tower walls were more substantial of course. However still not as thick since they were built without a rough rubble core as employed by Norman work. I always follow your excellent videos Richard, very many thanks.

Walked past this church and regretted it on a very long walk Shoreham - Brighton - Rottingdean and back: this fills the gap nicely.

So lovely to see your very informative video of St. Nicholas Church ! I lived down the road from this church 40 years ago. So great to see that this historical and quite beautiful church is being well taken care of. My understanding is that Shoreham by sea has undergone many changes over the years, as things do, since I immigrated to the States. I had passed by this building many times on my way to hiking the South Downs back in the day 😊. I miss Old Blighty, and love watching your videos.
