    I totally love the Diana Instant!!! I use the glass and the fish eye the most!!! I got my first Diana camera in 1979 when I taught photography at a sleep-away camp in Upstate New York!!! This is an awesome build on the low-fi reality of Diana!!! Also in 1979 I was dating someone named Daina ... close enough for Gov't work!!!

    • @InAnInstant
      @InAnInstant  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I really gotta try the fisheye! I feel like I’d be stoked on that. So cool you got your first Diana in ‘79, these thangs are so legendary. Daina doesn’t know what she’s missing 😍

    So, I’m taking the time to comment on this one because Diana is by far my favorite instant camera and the camera that really jump started my photography journey. The manual modes are so sick and taught me about light. Shooting it caught me to appreciate the imperfections of film. And most importantly, it taught me the slow down and really enjoy the moments. Thank you for giving Diana it’s time.

    • @InAnInstant
      @InAnInstant  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Totally on all those points, this is very much a straight up film camera that happens to use instant film - and that "slowness" can help many people grow as photographers! Thank you for this comment!!

  • @novelezra

    The Diana Instant Square is the instant camera I am unapologetically in love with. I know people tend to hate the camera and reviews were negative, but with the glass lens, I've taken some of the most wonderfully sharp and artistic shots of my life. Especially with the multiple exposure.
    More instant cameras need to use aperture for shooting instead of variable shutter speeds. Because whilst you may get an under/over exposed image with the Diana, you will never get a blurry one (from my experience anyway)
    Also in regards to the accidental firings, I have to disagree with what you said! I love that the camera if you fire it accidentally (which can happen with all instax as far as I am concerned) it doesnt just print it and you're stuck with a crappy photo of some random floor. You just take a few more photos (such as a portrait) and wallah! You have turned your accidental shot into an artistic masterpiece.
    "Hey, i noticed in this double exposure a photo of a toilet?"
    "Ah yes, that was intentional. This image is a metaphor for twitter"
    "I see"

    • @InAnInstant
      @InAnInstant  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I really don't understand hate for it - frankly, I haven't watched a single review of the camera (besides this, because I had to edit it) but I really agree with you. If you get the hang of nailing the aperture, the camera is so solid and will deliver what it promises.

    • @novelezra
      @novelezra 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@InAnInstant The reviews were mostly blogs that were like "I tried to take some photos and all I got was garbage". Now don't get me wrong, if I got a polaroid and it was like that, I'd scream. But the price of instant square film, if you know where to look is dirt cheap. Yes, the camera has a learning curve, but once you learn it, there is no going back. I dont even think I will ever touch the Instantkon. But seriously, thanks for the positive review. This camera needs more love and hopefully people will see this and give this cult classic some love.
      Also I look forward to your eventual review of the Instantkon!

    • @InAnInstant
      @InAnInstant  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@novelezra If you mean the InstantKon RF70, I did review that this year! It was a couple vids ago, check it out! Same thing as the SF70 so it's a bit of a catch-all 😂

    • @novelezra
      @novelezra 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@InAnInstant I totally meant the SF70! Which apparently isn't even out yet, I thought it came out last year! I also assumed that there would be some differences from the RF since the RF is already quite old. If they don't improve the SF compared to RF then that will be pretty sucky considering it's price is ridiculous.

    Damn, I’ve been so stuck on Lomo’Instant Square vs Diana Instant for so long now 😭 I’d love to see a head to head video on them, directly comparing shots etc!! Also bonus fact - my mam’s first camera back in the 60’s was an original Diana, and she got it by collecting tokens from biscuit wrappers and sending away to get a free camera!

    • @InAnInstant
      @InAnInstant  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Damn you’ve got Diana in the blood!! As you can see the Lomo Square and Diana produce drastically different results. They aren’t even really comparable which is why I didn’t do side-by-sides, but from the photo examples in this vid and my reviews you should be able to see the big distinctions. Time to save some more biscuit wrappers!!

    Another terrific video.
    I found the Diana, which I got about 2 years ago was great for learning Sunny 16. I just never got good at judging distance and I didn’t much care for the vignetting so I gave it and all the lenses to someone who could love it. This was before the glass lens was available.
    But it was certainly worth a try. And people who love, or come to live it, seriously live it.

    • @InAnInstant
      @InAnInstant  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Joan!! Judging the distance for focus is definitely a kryptonite of mine as well, but I've been surprised not be struggling as much recently. Guess years of shooting with Lomography's zone focusing cameras has trained the brain a bit. The vignetting though is something you definitely gotta love to want the Diana look!

  • @skywithoutend
    @skywithoutend 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    one small con I've experienced shooting the diana instant, which is definitely user error, was turning off the camera mid ejection cycle. The frame stopped coming up and obviously the frame was ruined, but also the arm wouldn't cycle as I turned the camera back on, essentially wasting two frames because of my mistake. It's definitely something you can learn to get better at but there's a learning curve there..

    I have this one too, the Adriano Edition, only camera and flash + the great glass lens. Have not yet used it much, just some test test shots. It’s a very creative camera that gives something different compared to Fujifilm. You could say that the photos it produces do have “a beauty of imperfection”. Now, just ordered a complete deluxe version so I can have all the other lenses and have a spare or can use one for color and the other for monochrome photos.

    Hi, quick note/question as I just got the Diana Instant: Is the flash supposed to sync with the normal 1/100 shutter? Cause if so, then my unit must be faulty. I found the flash on mine to only work in B mode and I've been using it this way making sure to not really hold the shutter button down but rather let it snap back up. I read in the manual that doing that gives you a 1/8 second shutter speed. I did not find any information in the manual about flash sync speed, though, so I'm somewhat confused... Love the camera anyways and this review was what convinced me to get it!
