Nas vs Jayz is a no brainer Nas hands down.... it's like 2001 all over again Jay was declared the winner and BANG Nas destroyed him

To me there are 2 tracks, 1 each, that represent both these Hip Hop Monsters main audience; New York State of Mind and Empire State of Mind! Say what you wanna say, but it has always been clear to me that Jay-Z has always been geared towards Club/Radio hits, while NaS has always been about his Art/Culture when laying lyrics and creativity on Tracks, with the pressure from Record companies of having to produce something for the Club/Radio on every album.

"Biggie's Ready to Die album came out several months after Illmatic, and Biggie was crowned king of New York in the popular culture of Hip Hop heads, Ready to Die unfairly over-shadowed Illmatic, which is truly a classic album. Though they were quite distinct artists, they innovated in analogous ways. Biggie merged language that was high and low, vernacular and vocabulary words, in a way that sounded natural. He did this with a sophisticated understanding of the patterns of black language. When a different or unusual word or phrase could be introduced while still maintaining the aesthetics of black language, he inserted it.
NaS, in contrast, merged concepts that were high and low, vernacular and metaphysical, in a manner that was whole rather than pieced together, thus presenting a complex that is unusual in any music outside of jazz. What Biggie started to do with language in 1994, NaS had already begun to do with ideas on Illmatic. He carries us through the "Righteous steps" of the cosmic, oceanic, and literal dimensions of his person. He transcends." - Imany Perry (Born To Use Mics)

Coop/Mike, this old vid popped up on my timeline so I wanted to add a comment. Mike D states that he thinks LL is the first hip hop Superstar. Coop disagrees and gives the nod to Snoop based on record sales and popularity. I'd just like to say that instead of judging based on total numbers in the 80's we should judge by percentage of THE ACTUAL HIP HOP LISTENING AUDIENCE. Once gangster rap became prominent in the 90's outside consumers made 5 million sales possible. These where nontraditional whites, females etc. In the 80's many females thought rap was aiight but wasn't buying it in droves unless it appealed to them directly. (Salt n Pepper, LL, Kane) They were more RnB oriented. Older blacks actually HATED hip hop. The caucasian audience was extremely limited and only bought into crossover acts like PE, NWA, BEASTIE BOYS, TONE LOC etc. So although LL never went 4-5 times platinum he did manage to outsale better rappers like Rakim. He got 100% of the interest from his core audience which was generally minority males between the ages of 13-25 or 30 and some of the young girls. This only equalled 1xplatinum because that's all that was feasible. That's how we end up with so many bonafide classics that just went gold like STRICTLY BUSINESS, WE CAN'T BE STOPPED, BACK IN BLACK, ALL FOR ONE, ILLMATIC, OBFCL etc. Now for instance look at Eminem's sales... they're through the roof consistently because he has the backing of the white audience AND some of the minorities. In short LL was a superstar to US even if the rest of the world wasn't paying attention. The rest of the world didn't matter then.

    Black Girl Lost

Your Da Man and also most of the songs on Stillmatic?
And not to mention, most of the songs on God Son were extremely well done, and Jay can’t even come close to those type of songs either. Also, Life Is Good is an extremely slept on album by Nas too. I thought he did an extremely good job with being innovative with the beats selection on that album, and his lyricism is also on point.

When BIG and Pac got killed the industry got shook and wanted to move away from "Gangsta" rap. That's when they started pushing this radio/club oriented Hip Hop. In reality radio had really just started playing Hip Hop outside the mix show format and usually only on the weekend. When Takeover came out, here in Buffalo, the only "Hip Hop and RnB" station we have played jay -Z entire album while also running Def Jam promotions and give aways. Jay had the entire fall to himself with no response from Nas. In December of that year, Ether dropped and that same radio station was playing Ether like a single but only during mix shows. They still don't play Nas records. The industry chose sides when Nas accused them of Payola which he was right about. Kevin Lyles writes in his book about how Def Jam street teams would tell DJ's and later program directors that if they didn't play there artist so many spends they not getting those exclusive releases and instead they would use the competition. But if they did play those records Def Jam would spend money on ads, artist signings, and promotional concerts.

to coop, resoectfully mike is absolutely right about LL he is hip hop's 1st (solo) superstar, don't let the #s fool you, cool j is a "g2" 2nd generation rapper, he's 16yrs old when his 1st song (i need a beat) is released, with his debut album (radio) following months later in (1985) rap is not then what it is now or even what if became in the 90s there was far less mainstream radio airplay, out here in n,y, we had the awsome two, mr magic, and video music box, that's all, and that 16yr old kid managed to sell 2million copies of a debut album, off of an upstart label with very little exposure, that would easily be comparable to the 5mil that snoop sold, LL only had rick rubin, no dr dre (of NWA fame) no benefit of radio stations dedicated primarily to hip hop as 8well as no mtv airplay etc, even dj clark kent has said it, simply put "LL is the 1st nigga who had everything", looks charisma, high lyrical ability as well as creativity listen to radio put it in it's proper perspective, considering the era as well as his age, he is UNDOUBTEDLY hip hop's 1st solo superstar.

Nas can beat JayZ in a Verzuz! Even Busta Rhymes, Enimem as well. Come outside JayZ- when you think you too big… can always be defeated! Jay Z is boring on stage….. Nas has street anthems…. Nas come out in camouflage gear with the bridge behind.

"Verzuz" started as a "thing" for the everyday radio listeners... It had an old-school flavor to it! The days when listening to the radio was much bigger. So, it is really about your catalog[radio hits]... I consider myself a Hip-hop head! Mike D and Coop sounds like Hip- hop heads... We can have this battle all day! who's better Jay or Nas? I would choose Jay, they would choose Nas... Now, Verzuz has turned into who performs better on stage, who has street hits, etc. Back to the "Catalog" ... It is not even a discussion, Nas numbers is nowhere close to JayZ's Numbers... Again, if I'm sitting in the Barbershop talking Hip-hop. Then we can talk Jay or Nas respectfully, but if I'm listening to the radio in my car, back in the '90s or early 2000s. He is not touching Jay! this is comical...

Lyrics are more important, think of how many rappers have come along over the years and sold a lot of records really quick who are not around anymore, then think of rappers who have been around for 30 years and still putting out music on a mainstream level while not catering towards the mainstream

The same respect that you show the white community when you're talking to them is the same respect you have to show the black community when you're talking to them. Every since he said to a black guest what are you smoking I lost respect for him it never seen that dude talk to a white guest that way or about white people that way to me he has proven to be a class clown.

If you stick to the understanding of "Versuz" and don't deviate from it, It's about RADIO HITS. Not hood hits, general consensus hits or any other types of hits. In that regards Nas doesn't fit the bill after a certain point. He don't have 20 radio hits to match Hovs. I think if they change the Versuz standard, all the competitions would be different.
