      Im certainly on a campaign to raise awareness with the protein now, i had no idea it could have such a lethal impact, i knew it was unhealthy for a colony to have too much protein but i never realised its impact could cause a complete colony wipe out.

    I also did not know about too much proteine being bad for founding colonies, so this might be considered a secret! I have seen many, many videos :) I am still not sure what the correct amount would be but I guess doing less than you are comfortable with makes sense as long as water and sugars are provided all the tine. I did have weird die-offs so that might be related to this. I will read those papers, thanks!

      I was just about to comment on your video, exactly that as a possibility with your colony, how much larvae do they have? Is the brood in egg stage? They could be crashing because they have too much protein at the moment, those workers dieing possibly protein toxicity?

    Another great video. Amazing research into the effects of protein. Now you say it it makes complete sense. I always try to give a nice balance, I always knew it was possible to poison workers if they don't use the protein but I never considered it may wipe out a Colony

    • @AntsTheColonialist
      @AntsTheColonialist  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks bud, Same i didn't actually realise a high protein diet could be fatal to the entire colony, which is more prevalent in founding colonies, i suppose larger colonies are able to spread out the consumption due to the amount of workers, making it less of a likely outcome for the workers to die from protein toxicity, coupled with often having a large amount of larvae to feed, they can offload that protein faster.

    • @antsonarock
      @antsonarock 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AntsTheColonialist yea it makes complete sense really. Founding stage is a fragile time for every Colony. These hints are so helpful and worth knowing you may of just saved millions of potential ant life's

    Great video with a lot of information , I think I made the protein mistake . I alwas feed them a lot of fruit flys or 1 cricket and sugar and come back every 4 days to re feed them thinking there hungry , going to start fresh today and feed them then wait 14 days and my trap jaw i feed her every 7 days , I been giving her protein every 4 days and she grown in numbers but this is a great video , learn from this , probably why I lost my aphaenogaster colony

    • @AntsTheColonialist
      @AntsTheColonialist  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey bud sorry for some reason youtube hides some comments from me! Glad you enjoyed the content bud, the 14 days is for a founding queen prior to first nanitics, then once she has workers, then you can hook up an outworld and feed as normal just size up the protein to larval amount, sadly i know i lost a couple of colonies to over feeding protein over the founding stage, its easy to do.

      @@AntsTheColonialist yeah 2 month ago I wrote this but in away it good so I can tell you I been doing this and all my colony are founding stage so once a week to 14 days works great for me I even got my invicta fire ants on a diet once a week I give them protein since there growing in number even with the diet , I make a video of them soon and I lost that queen we talk about RHYTIDOPONERA aspera I’m so disappointed because she was expensive 😂 and she look so cool , but I hope to try again if I can get another queen maybe one with some workers or larvae atless and try the set up we talk about

    Hi ,would you recomend not giving them access to sugar water 24/7?

    • @AntsTheColonialist
      @AntsTheColonialist  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ants actually need to fast for a couple of days after feeding, their stomach design means they process foods over 4 days then need 2-3 days fasting, you will notice if you have sugar available all the time the colony slows down, you don't get a great feeding response, workers stop their foraging activities, i feed mine weekly and leave the sugar solution in for a 24/48 hours, in this time the colony will always consume enough to feed the colony. Only fresh water should be provided 24/7
