I was her keyboardist/MD for a tour of Japan in 75. Not only was she a great singer but a beautiful soul. Astrid Bomaye❤
So effortless, so casual, like idly singing to entertain herself while doing something else, or like a Mother singing to relax her babe to sleep. You have got to love the silky, soothing, healing, sound.
that's definitely the essence of the performance, spitting facts right there
This song is from the album Getz/Gilberto
The Bossa Nova on Getz/Gilberto was meant to be "whispery"
If you listen to the entire album it sounds like theyre about to fall asleep because they sing so gently and without bass in their voices
People think Lorde, Lana del Rey and Billie Eilish popularized the whisper singing style...they obviously fail to realize it was done 50 years earlier 😂
After hearing this song for damn near 60 years, I finally get to go to Corcovado next year!
Rio is a mess, it’s noisy, crowded, dangerous and polluted. But I bet you’ll love it there. So much beauty in the landscape and the people, and a joy for life like I never saw before.
@@itsjustme4848 I spent 15 years in L.A. I'm ready for damn near anything!
@@victorhawkins3461 cool, after 60 years... I've started playing jazzguitar again after 30 years 2 weeks ago. And I've started with: tadaaa: Corcovado.
Have a good time in Rio ;-)
If you have the chance, you may go also to Bahia, the magical land of João Gilberto, you wouldn't regret.
She's the heart of bossanova.
Not to be disagreeable, but I think her husband Joao was the heart of bossanova. And Jobim was the soul.
her voice is like silk, smooth but very very rich
It has the melancholy and romanticism needed by that idiom, it is perfect indeed.
Ashley Love her accent is so charming, this is the only version I heard since the 60's nothing else compares.
I love her voice, and love her singing in English, such a clear, simple unaffected voice!
A good deal of her charm to me is the unemotional way she sings. Just the right notes and definitely no soul like so many do today when they sing 18 notes where one was written. Her style and voice is perfect especially for Bossa Nova type music.
M.J. Leger these lyrics say it all, finding the love of your life time, and the peace of that union.Together till the end.She let's the words bring the feeling, best version, for me.
Quiet nights of quiet stars
Quiet chords from my guitar
Floating on the silence
That surrounds us
Quiet thoughts and quiet dreams
Quiet walks by quiet strreams
And the window that looks out
On Corcovado
Oh how lovely
This is where I want to be
Here with you so close to me
Until the final flickers of life's embers
I was lost and lonely
Believing life was only
A bitter tragic joke
I found with you
The meaning of existence
Oh my love
I had no idea she had died recently until I read these comments. I will never stop playing her wonderful classics. Rest easy, Astrud Gilberto.
This is a singer! Pure voice. Simple and effective presentation. Distant but involved. No distractions . No flashy outfits. No auto tune. THIS IS A SINGER!!!
You do understand what you are describing is "pop" music.
The same is true in Jazz, Samba/Bossa Nova (new music), Classical...
They don't need to hide the "quality" of the music with distraction.
@@casyatbatbut pop music back in astrud era was also have a collection of great talent.
@@jayanirmala-lo3vp I am mostly familiar with Astrud's work with Jobim.
Again
The same is true in Jazz, Samba/Bossa Nova (new music), Classical...
They don't need to hide the "quality" of the music with distraction.
This is not pop music - this is Samba/Bossa Nova.
Stan Getz does not play "pop" music nor does the great Gary Burton
th-cam.com/video/sVdaFQhS86E/w-d-xo.html
I think it is disrespect to categorize Astrud as a "pop" artist.
First of all, the way she’s dressed was definitely considered flashy in that era. Secondly, your unsavory comment about auto-tune is coded white suprematist language - we all know EXACTLY what types of l artists you’re referring to with that one.
@@fellowdanbarber3323 Wow "white -suprematist- supremacist "language".
Again it is disrespectful to categorize Astrud as a "pop" artist.
Astrud is not a "pop" artist, either is Antonio Carlos Jobim, Milton Nascimento, Flora Purim, Airto Moreira and other Brazilian greats.
Defending Astrud is the exact opposite of being a "white supremacist.
That Jobim/Gilberto/Getz combination is unbeatable!
Oww ? and me thinking they were beaten in above vid and a few more by the same Pim Jacobs ensemble.
@@3pan1 Yep , that's Pim in the beginning , husband of Rita Reys , famous Dutch jazz singer.... 👌
@@sherrard5492 So right you are, sorry. If you haven't discovered it before, here's almost the whole set of which the above Corcovado was nicked, uploaded by what is probably a family member of saxophonist Ruud Brink himself who died in 1990. I'm not sure what was the reason to cut the set short however. th-cam.com/video/9DCaxN6TfH4/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=istvanbela
RIP, Astrud Gilberto. The sublime serenity of your voice has given our lives so much.
Rest in Peace Astrud. I’m sure you are now singing with the cherubims! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Beautiful voice, full of emotion. Always makes me think of cocktails, warm summer nights, cigarette holders, slinky black skirts, and handsome men with bedroom eyes...
One thing she's doing that sounds quite advanced to my ears is that she's rhythmically almost completely freeform. In her case it's probably natural and unintentional, but it works incredibly well within this genre. Other jazz singers often follow behind the beat, then catch up - hitting the beat briefly on certain key phrases. It creates a push/pull dynamic between the rhythm and the melodic lines, and that gives the sensation that the listener is immersed in the auditory equivalent to a gentle wave at the beach. Astrid's voice is so rhythmically free form, that it feels like random puffs of a gentle summer breeze. Another way of describing it would be that she's very "loose" on the beat. The percussionist is keeping the beat tight, and the other guys are in between, tying it all together. Stan's sax solos are loose, but also tighten up at the end of his phrasing, keeping it all from falling apart, which it's constantly just on the very tasty edge of - from the moment Astrid begins to sing.
Loose is not necessarily free form, the counting is just very fast, no one could actually count it, you just feel it. What's more impressive is the complete lack of vibration in her voice, almost robotic but, beautiful.
To my untrained ear, I think she is singing to a speaking rhythm, as if she is speaking the words to someone. (As opposed to singing on beat)
Jack, the tenor sax here is played by Ruud Brink, not Stan Getz. "In 1962 (Trio) Pim Jacobs (piano), Wim Overgaauw (guitar) and Ruud Jacobs (double bass), invited Brazilian singer Astrud Gilberto and drummer Dom Um Romão and Dutch tenor saxophone player Ruud Brink, for a musical TV Show called "Dzjes Zien". Which dedicaded a program to Bossa Nova." But you're right about all the important bits concerning rhythm and intonation.
Brazilian music! 🇧🇷❤️
Unfortunelly many brazilians prefer trash music of Brazil like a funk carioca and Brazilian cowntry music.
tall and tanned, young and lovely...
there goes astrud with her sweet voice and her whispery tone.
walks into eternity
alongside joao, jobim and getz making the divine sound of bossa nova sweat in the sky...
🇧🇷

I did not even get the news of her passing away a year ago. R.I.P. Astrud Gilberto, and thank you infinitely for having been part of my adolescence with this iconic piece of music.
RIP, beautiful lady, you had the voice of an angel, you'll fit right in, in Heaven..
I dedicated this song to my mom two years ago. Today was a beautiful sunny day, just like 2 years ago. RIP
Goodbye Astrud, you're a legend
What a beautiful voice and a beautiful lady!
I heard her do this, 1964 Cornell graduation week, and their concert is a treasured memory: she was so ethereal, unforced, completely captivating. The stage presence was that of innocence and truth, with a touch of stage fright. I liked the jazz, but loved Astrud.
I think they did some verses in the original Portuguese.
I have ALWAYS loved her voice, feel, and musicality. Brazilian music 🎶 is up there for me as some of the best in the world!!!
I remember listening to this in the 1960s. Timeless. Never gets old. Impossible to improve on perfection.
Her voice is like the wave of a tide hitting against glistening rocks by the shore. Love Astrud
RIP to this timeless Queen ♥️
Unforgettable voice and music. RIP Astrud Gilberto. 🥀
I have loved her for 60 years. She made the notes a slave to her voice. An astounding singular talent.

👑 Astrud Gilberto 🙌
I am only discovering these classics. I love her voice so much!!
Music for your soul! Try the whole album with 's wonderful, girl from Ipanema. Stan Getz, Chao Gilberto, and of course, his lovely wife, Astrid! Have a great day!
Bossas nOva - brazilian music, to make you feel better since 1958 😉
I love this SO much,,her voice,,,since a child
Reminds me of my youth. Chicago’s inner city. Hot and noisy. I was introduced to this music on our local television station. And was hooked forever. Those hot summer nights became a tropical Brazilian beach and the sounds of an angel.
Light Jazz..
Her slow favored Voice..
Yeah..natural right here..
I'd love to live in the world she creates with her voice.
Antonio Carlos Jobim was such a genius.. He was for sure one of the greatest songwriters of the 20th century. If you read the lyrics of this song you'll see how beautifully naked they are. That's the kind of person Jobim was. These lyrics also show the immense love he had for a girl. It somehow didn't work out and Jobim ended up in a mental facility for a while. That's how much and how deep his love was; he loved her with the whole core of his being.
Saudades... You guys have no idea how much I miss the place where I was born and raised. And this music, this music brings me to tears...
Thank you for putting this on TH-cam for all of us to enjoy.

She did not give an interview for 20 plus years... Now she is 80 ! How Lovely Lady !
Um cantinho, um violão
Esse amor, uma canção
Pra fazer feliz a quem se ama
Muita calma pra pensar
E ter tempo pra sonhar
Da janela vê-se o Corcovado
O Redentor, que lindo!
Quero a vida sempre assim
Com você perto de mim
Até o apagar da velha chama
E eu que era triste
Descrente desse mundo
Ao encontrar você eu conheci
O que é felicidade, meu amor.
I like those sentiments better. The English translator appears to have embellished the feelings and lean into philosophical territory instead of philo-philo territory ;)
@@arenmoore2516 the passage written by the person above was not embellished by the translator hahahah, it is another version of the song sung in Portuguese, by João Gilberto (who was her husband)
There is nobody better than she is, as a bossa nova singer. Something about her voice is so smooth.

Just beautiful: one of the most beautiful songs of all time and her interpretation is “Oh how lovely”
When I listen to her sing I get this "junior high school crush" on her. Her voice is so heavenly . A unique, beautiful sound.
NO ONE sings this as well as Astrud!!!! LOVE LOVE HER!!!!
A true siren and a definitive voice in 1960's jazz. Always loved Flora Purim and Urszula Dudziak as well... and Billy Holliday. Hauntingly sweet voices all.
Thanks for posting. Cheers.
Thank you forever for every timeless masterpiece youve ever created .. long live Astrud Gilberto
Beautiful song, and singer. Somewhere Jobim is smiling.
This is from Dutch TV with backing proivided by the Pim Jacobs Group. This is Atrud at her finest. So beautiful it will melt your heart and bring you to tears. The song writer, Antonio Carlos Jobim, was a genius.

Love the way her voice blends with the sax!
It's like she isn't even trying...
I thought the same. The whole band is so restrained but they're locked in so well.
Her breathless, throaty voice, soft yet insistent; stan Getz's sexy seductive sax, totally blended by that rhythmic drums. Bossa bova at its best. I have several of Astrud's albums and her husband Jao Gilberto's music. Just pure delight. Balmy and light. Just wonderful.
RIP Astrud i really love the sound of your voice
Never knew till now. Corcovado in Brazil is where the Christ the redeemer statue is.
She makes it look so natural and effortless. But make no mistake there was a lot of rehearsing and effort. And the end result is truly iconic.
Rest in peace astrud Gilberto 😢
her voice is unique and beautiful
She was so cute back then with the look and sound of innocence .

So lonely and enchanting voice of my forever favorite Astrud Gilberto. 💖
Here voice takes me to a place I've never been. My Noir paperback fantasy.
This is the voice one should hear in the best nightclub in the world; one where you'd better be someone to get a table. She is cool.
Ela tem charme e uma voz encantadora.
Wow, it's amazing how enchanting that music and that voice sound together. Like it was meant to be. And her accented English is mesmerizing. I can almost feel the hot sand under my feet, the salty sea breeze on my face, and her beautiful hand in mine as we walk along the beach.😍

A delicadeza e interpretação de Astrud é tão maravilhosamente hipnotizante . 🌹

I can't tell you how many times I have listened to this rendition... simply marvelous, awe inspiring.
Thank you, ASTRUD GILBERTO for doing your part to help tame mankind with your gift and talent. In the meantime, I'll keep the music playing.
I always felt bad about my singing voice because I rarely can produce vibrato on notes, even sustaining ones. It usually comes out as sustaining notes. Everyone else I looked up to in singing has control over vibrato. When I discovered Bossa nova and Astrid Gilberto's voice, I felt like there was genre for my voice!
Nah be happy with your voice and welcome to Bossa Nova, one of the purest brazilian musical genre.
The gentlest singer I’ve heard.
It’s beautiful and innocent.
Since my teens, I've remembered this pretty music sung by Astrud. Luv this song!
Two minutes of pure, raw talent! And Astrud, she is just so gorgeous.
This performance is class in every content of the word!
Eternally beautiful, both the song and Astrid.
She reminds me of Sade. A nice beautiful soft eloquent voice

Thank you, 1Tera Percent, for presenting this to us.
When I traveled to Europe I would play her music to associate my trip to her music, so every time I listen to this music I remember my trip.
Quiet nights of quiet stars- reminds me being in my hotel in Venice laying down looking out my window and watching the water sway and the beautiful buildings
