Poor Unfortunate Theater: Crash Course Theater #48

- Poor Theater and Theater of the Oppressed were two sort of concurrent movements that shared some of the same aims. Jerzy Grotowski's Poor Theater eschewed the use of lighting, props, costumes, makeup, and many of the other trappings of "rich" theater. Augusto Boal's Theater of the Oppressed in Brazil challenged the ideas of how plays were written and performed, and blurred the lines between actors and audiences.

I was thinking TODAY about how much I miss Mike Rugnetta in my feed. Clicked on this series without knowing it was him.
I've learnt more from Crash Course than I'd have ever learnt from college !
that means you were an unmotivated student...At least you could make use of the library to read more than you could learn from crash course even if every teacher you have is horrible.
@@Isaiah_McIntosh College is not it's library. It's it's courses. If you have to learn from the library you aren't learning from the college. You are learning from the library
@@screaminggecko7660 I would argue college is the classroom, the lecturers, the syllabuses, the "peer debates", the libraries. There are books that are very difficult or impossible to gain access to as a layman, at least in my country if you are not associated with a college or a similar institution. Colleges are in theory a hub of knowledge, the classes themselves are one part, the library is merely another. Crash course is pretty surface level so if you learnt more from crash course than years of college it seems like you didn't effectively use all of the aspects of college. I don't know his circumstances though, maybe my view is too narrow.
I think a refreshing take on either position is noting that you have the capacity to learn restlessly, and radically change yourself mid-process. Don't underestimate this.
Super excited about the next episode. As a note, Wole Soyinka is pronounced: Wall-ayy Shoyyy-inka. He’s actually a family friend!:) super psyched.
sounds like D&D
well, rehearsed D&D
I just got home from a party, saw this pop up on my phone and I couldn’t resits. Your video’s are amazing, just like every single course is. Please, keep up the good work!
My WiFi times out right when you began to explain poor theater, I thought it was appropriate
I hope those types of theaters are still around... Also, the ending tune brought me back to high school...
I must applaud Mike for pronunciation of Polish names. Very good indeed.
Also, I got immensely and inexplicably excited when I heard Mike saying name of my little hometown lol lol.
This has been super helpful, i didn't understand a thing but now i know most!!!! thank you i'd call you a Prof.
i got 92% on my test because of you!!! based on Grotowski
I'll admit, most of the theater movements that have been covered in this series really haven't interested me all that much. However, the idea of forum theater has definitely piqued my interest. It seems like such an enlivening concept.
your videos are very helpful. please suggest books on the topic as well. that will certainly be a good move to make the video more worth full to watch. i hope you don't mind my suggestion.

Theater of The Opressed sounds like Social Justice D&D! The actors play NPCs, the audience is the PCs and the joker is the DM.
Hey Crash Course
I was wondering if you guys could maybe start a series on music theory. It would be nice to have for musicians wanting to improve their work. It could cover topics such as chord progression, scales, Minor/Major...etc.
If you read this comment please consider, and thanks for taking the time to read it. Keep up the good work.
When your doing a musical for the little mermaid and you see the title
Yes! Theater involving the audience and we hit South America’s biggest country, Brazil
Theater of the Oppressed needs to return to Brazil because fascism has also returned to the country.
Poor, unfortunate theatre! I'm pain! In need! 🎶🎶
Theater of the Oppressed sounds like behavioral therapy
I felt Badal Sirkar's Third Theatre movement also deserved a mention.
excellent thank you!
These are good Education Videos!!!!
There is no happy medium. There is only fog and injustices. And a light peppering of intellectuals.
Now that seems useful!
The video seems to be missing from the Crash Course Theater playlist currently.
Yess brazilian theater :)
I've learned a lot too
Educational!
I’m confused, so poor theatre is theatre without text, costumes, lighting effects, sets, props, and music, but the play of acropolis has music, costumes, sets and special effects?
That confused me as well. I'm assuming that the Akropolis was from earlier on in the playwright's career, when he was still using props and costumes. But I'm just guessing.
Not necessarily, it's more of an acknowledgement that theatre doesn't need those things. In the words of Peter Brook, who popularised many of Grotowski's techniques and theories: 'I can take any empty space and call it a bare stage. A man walks across this empty space whilst someone else is watching him, and this is all that is needed for an act of theatre to be engaged'
Poor theatre starts with the actor, and empowers people without access to dedicated spaces, expensive props, costumes and makeup to remember what is the most important foundation of Theatre; the actors and their performances. If you've ever been to a modern 'Black Box' workshop theatre where all the actors just wear stage blacks, with minimal costume, then you are witnessing Grotowski's influence.
*So... when are we going to get to the episode on flash mobs?*
All of you are amazing.
If

why is the intro music so quiet on crash course theatre
Is this the longest crash course course?
HOW CAN I USE APA7 TO REFFERENSE THIS TH-cam CHANNEL???????= or this video so many autors
I believe this course to be very important not just for those curious about theatre but for a wider social and well rounded education. Subscribed to Pewdiepie.
i think crash course should do an Australian history series because for most of the world, even Australians don't know too much about it. by history i mean the 60,000 year history of the Aboriginal people not just the history of when white men landed
Who else clicked here so fast?
White Rabbit, Red Rabbit.

Hi
I enjoy theater and have been involved in it, but the pretension and claims of exalted aims gets to be a bit much after awhile. That goes double for preachy theater.
Ooof, the Polish pronunciation :(
I also wrote a paper on Grotowski's poor theatre in university. Got an A+ ;)
Heyyy
I'm looking at this at 7:00, and... they HAVE a set, they HAVE props, they HAVE costumes, they HAVE music, and most importantly, the have a script of some sort, so they HAVE a text. So all these things he "removed" from theater weren't removed at all. Is "Poor Theater" anything more than a lie then?

zZz
Now I know what all those parodies of the "new" theater was all about. It seems like a cross between improvisation and just bad writing. And there is no point to it.

You're a good looking guy. Why not shave your head and grow your beard out? I can't stop staring at the wisp comb over.
Another video on theater. Another video which reaffirms my distaste for theater. If theater is as Mike presents it, then I have little interest in anything more modern than Shakespeare, and even less respect.
He's talking about various forms of theatre over these videos. These styles were never mainstream but are important to the evolution of theatre.
The wonderful thing about theatre is that there are so many ways to do it. I feel confident that there is a style out there that will work for you.
Elaborate?
I've learned a lot too
