    What I actually see in you two, and I'm comparing to the couple of years I've lived in the US (as a corporate pilot, so I've seen a good part of it), is that you're becoming more open-minded. Instead of being afraid or uncomfortable around unknown things or other cultures, you're becoming interested, wanting to find out more. I'm really glad that that is happening to you. I think it's also the reason you're doing so well here. I think it's fantastic that it seems that you've found your place in the world. Happy to have you!

      I LOVE your open attitudes, and willingness to accept a different way of life! O have always felt drawn to the Netherlands since I first visited as a 13 year old with my family.
      I've totally enjoyed - but also benefitted from! - learning from you guys, even to simply prep for a trip.
      So excited that my hubby and I finally have managed the minor health issues we both had this year and are booked to fly over in July! I hadn't figured on getting to Rotterdam, but apparently there are some pretty amazing prehistoric whale bones at the Naturhistorisch Museum. Since Devon's a true armchair Paleontologist, we'll be in your city!!! I wonder what else we sh be sure to do/see, where to eat... 😉🇳🇱
      LOVE your work!

    About the flowers, we are spoiled in the Netherlands. Sometimes I am watching a romcom from the USA and somebody gives their love interest a bouquet of flowers. And when I see those flowers I am like, that bouquet would be like the cheapest ones at the tankstation or supermarket in the Netherlands. 😂

    The thumbnail in combination with the title had me in a fit. It is so telling about your transformation. I can vividly remember the pained expressions on Eric's face when he tried his first bitterbal or gods forbit,.. almonds on his cookie. Over time the realisation started to kick in that other things can be nice if you try them out and now you've become curious to try things. By now you'll understand the raised eyebrows and skeptic look when Europeans hear Americans go on about the land of the free and freedom. I followed the transformation and think you both are far more relaxed these days.Thank you for sharing this journey.

    • @mapostma866

      I think we are talking about "culture" and not so much about "freedom".

    • @AnagramGinger
      @AnagramGinger ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@rutgerb it’s not required by law to have a social security number in the US, but it is basically required by life. I don’t think you can even get a driver’s license or a mortgage without one, so what’s the point in not getting one?
      US freedom is being able to live off-grid, but on grid everything is pretty strict. I don’t think it’s fair to compare a Dutch life to that of an American hermit. The average American enjoys less freedom than we do, I think that’s fair to say.

    • @rutgerb
      @rutgerb ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AnagramGinger i agree , the debt culture alone is something which robs Americans of their freedoms. But its not only the hermit, the odd cult or the pseudo guerilla group: when you are around the top of the pyramid you enjoy plenty of extra freedoms compared to us.
      I am glad our society is different, but we are not allowed to have an alternative, they do.

    You had me laughing out loud about people afraid of being scammed… Picture this: me being over 60, living in Rotterdam my whole life, worked in the City Hall for decades, and then when leaving the office, Coolsingel, late sunny afternoon, there’s a couple, studying the city plan but looking around a little bewildered. So I kindly asked them: "Can I be of assistance?" Upon which they noticeably moved closer together, said "No" (like I was handing out religious or political pamphlets), and briskly turned away from me.
    Considering the other one weird, was definitely mutual ;-)

      Regarding the service in a bar/restaurant or at the terras in the Netherlands. The service is rubbish. Long waits for ordering, drinks or bill. It’s not uncommon a waiter is being rude. The waiters are usually students doing it as a side job. They don’t live for the tips so they don’t care much about service. They have no intention this becoming a main income. Which is different then others countries, esp. USA. Where waiting is main income. And giving good service means bigger tips.
      Dutch want to be efficient and loath to wait. That’s why, instead of waiting for the bill, they usually go up to the bar or register to pay before leaving. Also why Dutch don’t que up in a line but from a funnel before an entrance.

    Yes, in Europe people waiting on tables get a decent pay. That makes them expensive for the restaurant and they only employ as many as they really need. They might not have the time to be at your table in the first three minutes. Also: europeans sit down to relax, have a nice chat, look at who's walking by ... No need for your drink or meal to appear instantly. Take your time!!

    13:46 Eel, every kind of preparation, is delicious but also very expensive here in Germany. Hering, we call it Matjes, is the best and quite cheap. You need to get it fresh from a fisherman/weekly market, never from the super market. I can see how people, not used to it, have prejudices because of the look and the texture. I myself don't know much what is more delicious.

    This is a organisation which collects money so kids can play outside for example. This happened just at the point you where talking about being afraid getting mugged or scammed when you where walking in a street in the US. I realised that this is such a good example how it should be everywhere in the world.....not being afraid that your kids getting hurt when they want to collect money for a good cause. The reasons for the difference in shopping for food (and other things) is not only the ones you have mentioned but also the difference in zoning policy. In general, in the USA you have much stricter zoning into housing and shopping areas. In Europe, zoning is more flexible, and care is taken that shops are available inside housing areas.

      I certainly should feel better if I could afford a house with more privacy and not the neighbours attached to my house. The Netherlands is overcrowded and only having a small garden with a house in a row and neighbours at the other side of the hedge is really not my choice. Also I don't like to be multicultural like nowadays, actually I prefer to only get along with people from my own culture and it bothers me for instance to face classmates of my children who are not allowed to join school camp just because of their religion. A lot of Dutch people are less happy than before, that is the current reality.

    When i saw your first vlog when you both living in Rotterdam i saw 2 americans living in the Netherlands now i see 2 dutch americans if you know what i mean and in the Netherlands you can enjoy the litle things in life and if you added all the litle things up then it become a huge thing a way of life and i think in the states it's all about big things, big cars big houses just expensive stuff if you have that in the states they see you as a person who made it, you have succes in life, in the Netherlans those things do not make you succesfull if you're succesfull in the Netherlands you only have to be a happy person that enjoy life, the prime minister went to work on his bike that says enough i think, great vlog and i alway's enjoy watching both of you so keep up the good work

    Right, public transportation here is good! In particular from my wheelchair perspective! BUT, IT'S NOT PERFECT!!!! One example: I once planned to take the train from Amsterdam to Amersfoort, but the elevator was broken. So, I took the train to Hoofddorp, elevator broken. From there I took the train to Leiden in order to make the transfer at Utrecht Central, Leiden was closed! So, time was running out, because it was close to midnight, with the interverence of the conductor I made it from The Hague to Amersfoort!

    Regarding public transportation: as long as live in heavily populated areas like you do I believe and especially if you live in the Randstad then yeah, public transportation is great. But as soon as you live anywhere to the east and north of Utrecht then you will be needing something much more often. And the more east or north you go (or southeast) you are pretty much dependent on having a car or maybe a motorbike because what buslines there are they won't get you to were you need to be in most cases, or not at the times you need to go somewhere. I have had my drivers license since I was 18 and had a car ever since (first one was bought by my parents, the rest I paid for myself) and it is the one thing (besides music) I could not live without.

      @marjabeverwijk5630 ปีที่แล้ว

      I remember back in the day when I went to secondary school by bike about 11 km away. And in the village where I grew up, it was the norm to say hello (raise your hand, say hi, etc.) when passing each other as a recognition of the society we all belong to, everyone you meet. In the slightly larger city (Hoorn) where I went to school, that was not the norm, and I also regularly got strange looks from the people I accidentally greeted out of habit in the morning on my way to school.

    Curtains. There's a Dutch joke: a woman calls the police because from her home she could see her naked neighbor walking around in his house. Officer responded and went to have a look. He couldn't see anything, but the woman went to get a small step ladder and told the officer to get on it and have another look. Meat at the butcher, vegetables at the greengrocer, fish at the fishmonger, bread at the baker. Never buy at a supermarket. In The Netherlands you'll find all of those within a reasonable distance and you'll get personal asistance from the owner, who will be an expert in his trade and often give you a sample of his products in the case of cheese. Daily shopping for bread and vegetables is a thing.

I hope there will still be situations you can make a video about, because they are fun. Maybe you should try to make a whole video talking Nederlands. Including bloopers. Just to see that you are not only adapting habits, but also the language. Just once....Could be fun.... Houdoe !!

    When shopping : just ask. Shopkeepers will gladly serve. And also most customers are willing to help.
    As for comfort zone and eating : the Dutch saying is 'What the farmer doesn't know he won't eat'. So just keep your comfort zone, but try to extend it. Nobody will frown upon you, but will appreciate the simple effort. And just saying "I've tried it, but not for me" is ample explanation.
    As for restaurants : it is customary that your arrival is acknowledged. At least with eye contact and a friendly nod. They allow you plenty of time to get at ease, usually bringing the menu first.

    I think the main reason why you like living in The Netherlands so much is your personalities. You are open-minded, inquisitive and able to accept that different is not necessarily bad. Not at all like the typical Americans that I've come across so often, who keep on complaining and continuously state that everything is better in the US.

    I had to explain to my Boston friend that going into a shop/bar etc and saying " Get me" "Give me" "I'll have" " I'll take " is seen as extremely rude. ( Well it is lol) and that Europeans say "Please can I have" or "May I have" and "thank you"when buying goods. Patience is a super power.

    I think you should visit other areas of the Netherlands as not everything looks the same. In Friesland province for example you would have more fields then towns. Really a excellent place to enjoy cycling around for example. Just make sure you take notice of specially the farmers in their tractors, if the road is too narrow, stop and get on the side of the road and let them pass. This is not just saver for you but also shows respect towards them. There are paths that are narrow enough to have 1 tractor on it and that's it, so please take that to heart, specially if they have equipment attached or some form of trailer. It does happen in Friesland that farmers have 2 or 3 things behind their tractor on occasion so it's really saver to make sure you pay attention.
    Other interesting thing in Friesland would be the trains. Starting from Rotterdam you can go straight to Leeuwarden and take 3 different lines. Leeuwarden - Stavoren, Leeuwarden - Harlingen or Leeuwarden - Groningen. This not including bus lines that would add a lot more routes including stops on the Afsluitdijk all the way to the North-Holland province side. Specially the first 2 trains are limited in speed as they are regional.
    Leeuwarden - Stavoren: Pro's would be that you can stop at Workum (city even if it's village sized for Americans) where you have some museums that are worth going to and look somewhat old still. If you like you can cycle or walk to the beach (IJsselmeer) but do know this is about 2 km and you must go trough the city center. At the beach you have a surfshop and a beach restaurant where you can get icecream and other things. A lot of kitesurfers usually are present here, I recommend not going there when the wind is storm like as there are kite surfers that think it's wise to go out during such times. You don't want one of those things slam on your head.
    You can also get out at the next station which would be near another tiny city called Hindeloopen. You will need to walk for a bit to get to this city but it's worth it. You are allowed to get on the dijk (dyke/dam for English speakers, and no not that kind. Darned Brits...) where you can walk between the sheep (watch your step for sheep poop). It goes all the way to the marina parking lot and from there you are almost in town already. Or take the cycling lane that's next to the road which leads to pretty much the same place. A lot of old buildings here as well, even buildings from the 1600's. Also here you have a beach if you are willing to put in some extra walking.
    Another stop would be the last one, Stavoren. This is also a city and from here you can take a ferry (during summer, no idea what the times or details are. You will have to research this before you go) all the way to Enkhuizen in North-Holland province. This ferry takes from what I remember about 2 hours? Not sure. But it might be well worth it as in Enkhuizen you can visit a open air museum called the "Zuiderzeemuseum". A place you will need a full day to really take in everything so getting a hotel there might be well worth it.
    Leeuwarden - Harlingen: The trip is worth it for the view, but the real bonus is arriving at Harlingen. You have multiple Ferry routes to the islands north of it, if you get lucky you might see seals even! The islands on it self are well worth a visit as well. Also recommended here to just stay a few days to really enjoy the place and how quiet it is there. Really good if you need to get out of the big city for a while to recharge yourself!
    Just outside Leeuwarden you can even get near the airbase and the landing strip. They fly over real low to land and you can even get a little closer in a farmers field (spotters bult as it's called, which is a mount of dirt essentially to overlook the airbase a bit better) A sight that is really not present in the US or really anywhere. You do need to get lucky with the aircraft obviously.
    Also within Leeuwarden itself you have plenty to do and see. There is even a tiny zoo that's rather unknown so far, well worth a visit as well.
    So what i'm trying to tell you with this is that the Netherlands has a lot more too offer then what you so far found within the big cities. Go explore! It's well worth it! The entire country can be traversed by public transportation so there is no real need for a car either.

    • @SIG442
      @SIG442 ปีที่แล้ว

      I forgot to add, between Workum - Hindeloopen - Stavoren you can travel by bicycle all along the dijk, very quiet route. Can also go trough the towns which still remains very quiet. Another thing to try out! You could even start in Stavoren and cycle all the way to Harlingen if you really wanted to, this all along the dijk and nature reserves.
