You forgot the number one tip to playing thrash metal: wear denim
Slayer (read 'Jeff') often uses big third in minor riffs (like G# in Em, 'World Painted Blood' for example), and Metallica - melodic minor (like C# in Em, riff on bass solo from 'Spit Out The Bone'). All of that makes some unexpected to ears turns and brings exotic colours to sound
Hi frrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrriend! Nice to see that you watch Tyler's videos
MiW: no one is faster than Slayer
Kreator: Hold my Bratwurst
Everyone TRIED to be faster than Slayer at those times that's why.
I prefer playing the fast rhythms in thrash rather than shredding
@@stantorren4400 yeah I have since moved on entirely from metal since making this comment and I feel like you should get ryhtms and phrasing down before you attempt to try and solo.
@@faboolean7039 or just be like me, try to learn a thrash solo (Creeping Death for me), turn it off, and say fuck it I'm a rhythm player now
@@calebcleland8716 lol I can’t disagree. Lead is easier tbh. It’s like singing but on the guitar. Rhythm is more important 🥴🤤
Thrash metal:
E 0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0
150 - 240 bpm
Down picking
Head banging
High Volumes
Scooped Mids
Heavy Distortion
@@Samford_ alt picking is used a lot more for the higher end speed thrash. People think James hetfield uses only downpicking💀
@@OriginalKingRichTv literally the first metallica song has alt picking, it pisses me off when people say he downpicks songs like dyers eve and damage inc
Intro
When you find a bad tab for hit the lights
My favorite thrash band is Nickelback
Simsom Guppington wrong, Nickelback is clearly black tech death grind core
Slow tempo can exist in thrash, if it is still chugging and brutal- And then there were none by exodus, (the intro of ) rat eater - toxic Holocaust and a few others I don't remember , and also if it builds tension
A disillusioned Idiot And pasta It has to have a fast feeling. Even if it's slower
E harmonic minor is 100% Metallica
Well Death and Nile fit right there as well sure... but hearing Tyler play the scale I heard some 'tallica flavor here and there... But this could be said for hundreds if not thousands of bands.
Death are more into phrygian mode and other variants of it than harmonic minor for the most part tbh. Nile definitely though haha
Metallica play Harmonic minor and Lochian. And others. They just play what sounds tight to them.
The ending of Creeping Death is literally this scale note for note, that's why it sounded so "Metallica" to me ;)
“Early megadeth”
“Holy wars”
(Two words combined that cant make sense) edit: I have fixed my mistake thank you for pointing it out
thrash is all about gallopy and semi-palm muted riffs
Angel of Death is only about 160 bpm. It's played in double time for a lot of the song, giving the impression of being around 320.
Thrash metal in four words:
0-0-0-0
Cyrekt nah. That’s Thrash. I’ve been learning Metallica songs and the amount of open E and A string is insane.
Vektor, progressive blackened thrash with a tinge of death, anyone
Big Daddy They play progressive thrash with heavy black and death influence.
My favourite thrash metal band will always be Testament
The Holy Wars riff is actually a hammer on from D to E , then pull off from G to E
slow tempo doesn't exist in trash? Harvester of sorrow
Heisenberg Crow well that escalated quickly xD I meant no disrespect buddy.
eet fuk I would say a lot of songs from the black album are more groove metal than they are thrash
Dude I really love how you cover a lot of genres in your tips. I'm a blues/jazz guy but I'm always interested in you giving tips about other genres
This guy plays all the songs wrong
It happens when you know shitloads of songs. I have to write down every song I've learned because I forget I know them.
@@jimjambananaslam3596 Well if you are going to make educational video, at least prepare yourself. That Holy Wars riffs killed me.
Also you cant play them correct on youtube anymore. The record companies will come for your butt if you try to make money of a video playing a copyrighted riff.
@@Buraz93 Well if you all know how the riff is played...
I dont think it matters for the purpose of the video which is to talk a little about the basic approach and not to learn the songs.
They are on youtube in several versions to learn.
I'm a blues player but your videos always entice me to venture into new areas and genres. I'm finally getting a handle on the modes from the Super System and your TH-cam videos make more sense now. Thx!
The way you play angel of death makes me sad 😞

He’s actually playing the Riff of the verse at the pretty END of the song.
So it’s actually RIGHT because Dave is playing this simplified version there..
🤘🏻
Rock on!
Nice video Tyler, you should make a series out of this with different styles of metal or guitar based music in general.
My default for whatever I write is E natural minor, but for a certain idea I wanted to use E locrian to make for an alarming mood; that later turned into super locrian as a b4 fitted better than a natural 4 and then the b5 was too uncomfortable, so I raised that one and I ended up in E phrygian b4 from the harmonic major system
There isn't really any trem picking in it so far, but that might change and I'm on high tempo anyway (195 bpm, was planning on switching to a 12/8 signature (equivalent to triplet notes in 4/4 at 130 bpm) for a little while)
For as far as I've done anything with thrash I haven't yet applied trem picking at all, maybe 1 speed metal song that I got is maybe a bit on the edge between speed and thrash (but then the thrashy part drops a bit at the backup riffs for the solos and the long power chords at the chorus) and the tempo is only 140 bpm, but the rythm is in double time, so...
Holy wars - one of the best riffs
My favourite guitar youtuber finally makes a video about the style of music I play. Yes.
Great video Tyler!
your amount of subscribers are rising fast man
it's totally due to his off the cuff "how do you play guitar in 3 words or less?" rock star interviews ... :/
Sneeky Pete after he did those videos it has rised oretty damn fast yea
Megadeth's Mechanix is probably the fastest Thrash song. 260bpm
ApachE no. I mean the mechanix. Mustaine originally wrote it, then Metallica rewrote a lot of it. I mean the song that Megadeth released on Killing is my Business
Hahaha watching most guitar teachers play thrash is hilarious!! I always get a kick out of guitar store guys trying to keep up.
Absolutely awesome. Thank you for sharing your tips.👍🔥🔥💙
Great work bro
Tyler:speaks about music theory
Me: lol me play power chords repeatedly
SICK!! Awesome lesson 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Minor scales with that oriental feel phrygian Harmonic etc AND a fast speed bpm, 16th notes 32nd notes as well as 16 32 note triplets, sliding Power chords AND Palm muting dynamics . Add triplets as well AND odd rhythms ( not on the downbeat ) 👍👍 synchronize the triplets with the bass drum for a heavier feel
Do Groove Metal next.
FernTheTH-camr Groove metal would be cool. but I don't think Tyler is into that kind of metal. D:
Simsom Guppington umm have you not seen tyler emulate dimebag in his metal guitar legends vid? u may not be entirely wrong, but I'm sure that he at least likes Pantera somewhat
*sry I replied to the wrong comment initially
A habits of Alex Skolnik would be awesome!
awesome stuff man
You're raw bro great vid, informative and you're a hella dope player
If he cut off his pinky, he wouldn't even notice
My favorite Thrash Metal band is Overkill!!!
normal human xD if it is, but I was really referring to the band Overkill
Love the grave, deep voice for the serious but awesome genre \m/
I really like how you break these things down.
Am I correct in saying that Sodom or Slayer is thrash, but they're more of an intermediate into the realm of death metal?
Precisely. Slayer is definitely thrash, but you can hear how they influenced death metal in the drums and some of the riffing.
Jacob Oberstadt the german thrash bands yes because they use a more gutteral/raspy/distorted vocal style
Then it's more like the blurred lines between two or even three genres. Then again, the way evolution works, there are the groupers, and there are the separators. People who prefer to classify groups as narrow as possible or as wide as possible. And, every band is their own thing, so it's hard to say. Are you with me on that?
Jacob Oberstadt Slayer is pretty much just thrash they just have a brutal theme that usually death metal does. Although, death metal and thrash metal are kind of related in some ways, but has major differences though.
Malachi Woodard Yeah, for example I find there's a lot of jazz influence even in death metal, and there's way more harmonization and dynamics, and technical musical tools that don't show up in old school thrash.
Make a video talking about groove metal riffs ... Like Lamb Of God, damn sick !
Awesome stuff! Very informative!
Love your videos always interesting
I love Sylosis merging melodic death with trash metal
NeZversTutorials my absolute favorite band. glad to find another fan here!

Nice video, but that doesn't sound like Holy Wars.
THANKS I AM A KIRK HAMMET NOW, AND I GONA LOOSE PHONE WITH RIFFS XD
Thrash is tons of fun and quite an intense guitar workout! Can you do a lesson on spider chords? These make things much easier.
For a begginer i thing you are a very skilled teacher. I leave in Athens Greece.

The earlier was violator - thrash maniacs
Thanks for the advice.
Great video! I'm all the way to thrash metal and D.R.I. is one of my favourites. Have you ever heard about Lost Society? They're finnish thrash band and they kick so much ass!
The bass in slayer is simpler than the guitar in slayer sometimes
I come to Music is win because... Oops the wrong vid.
btw the Holy Wars riff is what you play for one bar, then instead of playing on the 5th fret and hammering on to 7, you have to play on the 10th fret and pull off to.
i hope i ll have that kind of prs guitar someday
soo beautiful
i like playing like how Dave Mustain plays by resting his pick hand slightly on the strings to get that muting sound after the power cords but i step up the speed to get that wicked crunch that CANNIBAL CORPSE gave us in the Chris Barnes days! the song "GUTTED" off "BUTCHERED AT BIRTH" is a perfect example!
Excellent.
5:32 demolition hammer are faster than slayer sometimes
You get 1,000,000 scene points just for mentioning that band.
There seems to be a lack of appreciation for D.R.I. and Nuclear Assault around these parts as well.
@@kevinr278 sadly, people only know the big bands.. they don't what they are missing

Keep it heavy brother.
you played holy wars wrong...the hammer-on changes the second time...
Hell yeah, gonna work on my chops now lol
New strings? Fresh pick? Both? It sounds even more amazing than normal.
Drift0r of guitars.
When I see these thrash instructional videos, I always have to remind myself that some of the younger players aren’t as familiar with it as we older players.
Back in the ‘80s & ‘90s, especially in Los Angeles, it was common place.
Thrash got a bad rap from some people, though.
We were warming up & some guitarist for a funk band scoffed & chuckled & rolled his eyes as he said, “Trash Metal.”
I played an intro riff to one of my songs, held my guitar out to him & said, “Play that riff.”
His response: “Oh, I can’t play that.”
My response: “Then shut the f... up! Don’t talk sh... about the music I write if you lack the skills to play it.”
I mean, seriously. There are some types of music that I am not a fan of, for example Jazz Fusion, but I don’t talk sh... about the musicians, because I know I cannot play it.
If it is simple & easy to play I can understand someone dismissing it, but to dismiss someone’s music to their face is a d... move & worse if the person slinging the insult lacks the skill to play it.
awsome, thanx!!!!
Hey, this video is just awesome. Could you do same stuff about thrash solos?
"thrash is all about minor tonality"
laughs in phrygian dominant
@@Max-The-Axe phrygian dominant is a major scale and its one of the most used ones
You do know phrygian dominant is the 5th mode of harmonic minor, right?
Holy Wars is played slightly incorrect, you alternate between 5 7 and 10 7 on the A string in between the chugging open E
wow nice first time i see a comment about in thrash you did not really got a scale everything is possible. but with time i use to spot where is my sound the scale and keep going playing by ear with mixing the scale with .and not forgetten you can almost add any note it s looking simple and at that point you really see how a guitarist know what he doing :) it a thing about see the scale, tempo, sound and add note wasnt suppose to be there only thing i dont try to mix i see couple note does not sound good bending but i know why it s still pretty awesome to understand at least
By the way , in holy wars , 5-7 000 10-7 00000000 5-7 000 5-7 0000 6-5 (the last ones are powerchords)
Megadeth is the best thrash Band ever.
I don't think there is a "Best" but if there was then yeah deth would be my pick
Really dude? Have you forgotten about Risk? Youthanasia? Cryptic Writings? United Abominations? Fucking Super Collider? Yea the old shit like Peace Sells, Killing is my business, and Rust in Peace are great but there's no denying that the overall Megadeth catalog is average at best, and in my opinion pretty mediocre.
Chief Thunder The fuck are you talking about. The first 6 Megadeth albums were outstanding classics. Youthanasia wasn't thrash but was an amazing heavy metal album. Cryptic Writings leans to alt. Metal and has some thrash songs that have great melodies such as The Disintegrators and FFF. Risk is an alright Alternative album. And United Abominations is a good album itself, more progressive metal but it's not "average." And yeah, Super Collider was pretty shit. But to the point, you listed 5 albums of their 15. So I mean, such an "average" band. Their earlier shit was better than anything else at that time, faster, more melody, better composition. Etc.
That first riff is so Hit the Lights
OBEY YOUR MASTER, (a locrian, phrygian, aeolian, harmonic, chromatic, over 9000 bpm) MASTER! Master of Thrash you're pulling my strings!
4:30 That is NOT how you fucking play that riff. What tab did you even use?!
Flapjack71LIV3 you're right he's wayyyy off. Doesn't even keep it in count smh
Do you think you could do a video on how to make your pinky stronger? Like tips, excercises, etc… because I'm a well developed guitar player by now, but I never really trained my pinky enough, so when I try to use it now a days it becomes the bane of my existence. Thanks.
labuti17 take a power chord and replace your ring finger with your pinky and just play and every now and then slide your pinky down one fret while keeping your index in the same spot. Overtime you will feel more confident using your pinky but you can also do pull ons and pull offs in the same context and potentially you'll get faster at it. Hope this helps, it helped me with the same problem!
I would add play your scales as quick as you can, and implement your pinky on the far notes. I'm only three years in, but my pinky is pretty strong, and I warm up that way (and with alternate picking excercizes all the time
i undestand too play with 5 movable form and original pattern of they add some pentatonic and have fun adding note haha i love thrashh metal i will go see d.r.i at ottawa and rockfest montebello
You should do one of those Guitar Legend videos with Thrash Legends ! :)
Another really good kind of perfect thrash riff would be Spit Out the Bone by Metallica
Luke Fleshman definitely and they use melodic minor in there aswell with a c# chord being the major sixth in e minor
You played holy wars weird
Brandon Booze
He’s actually playing the Riff of the verse at the pretty END of the song.

If you were to do unmuted single-string parts of a riff, (like the prechorus in Anthrax's Madhouse), what intervals would be good to emphasize? I understand that Scott Ian focused on the tritone in that, but just some intervals common to thrash that are used as consecutive notes instead of chords. I have noticed the tritone and major 3rd are common, but are there any others worth mentioning?
The Sword also has some real nice thrashy riffs in their older music. Mostly the first 2 albums
