Et bien merci voilà ce qui explique tout! Comme votre français est excellent Seb vous comprendrez mon commentaire . Keep going man love your work amazing.
You should try playing it at 4 times the tempo and just slowing the whole thing down. See if you can tell the difference between that and the pitch shifter. The problem with trombones is that the shape of the wave changes as it travels down the bore, especially when you're playing ff. You get lots of higher overtones and sometimes actual shockwaves. It's thought to be an important factor in the 'brassiness' of the sound.
Thanks Seb. I’ve been playing Trumpet Flugle and cornet for 47 years. You have reignited my enthusiasm. It’s hard to keep playing when we have no gigs in lock down. Thanks for the inspiration. Oh and I’ve bought myself a soprano Trombone it was cheap so I was amazed at how well it plays. Can’t believe you’ve got 3 not likes? Who are these people. 🤦♂️🎺
Thank you very much Seb! I'm now 9 years into playing trumpet and using the quarantine time to self-teach Tuba (but on an actual E-flat-Tuba ;) ). This short tune is just so much fun to play and the end is a great opportunity to work on the lowest possible notes and the tricky intonation down there.
This is perfectly timed, a week or two I had the idea to record some choral pieces, rearranged for 2 trumpets, trombone and tuba, and play them with trumpets and a cornet. I already got a quite decent sound by simply pitchshifting with sox, now I have to learn video editing and arranging...
So, the company wants a couple of brass Christmas pieces. I watch Seb and think how hard can it be? Looks quite easy... Ok, I play trombone. Record trombone part - check. Grab my partner's double horn. Um,... Uh... Transcribe to bass clef, hold the Bb key down and go to town. Horn done. Grab the euphonium and record the tuba part; take it down an octave in post. Awesome! So, about the two trumpet parts... I know! - transcribe to bass clef - record on trombone and take them up an octave. I'm pretty much there, right? OMG! the trumpet parts sounded awful! Thin and wispy - no punch or presence. CRAP! Ok, calm down... Seb plays that cool soprano bone, so I order one of those. That little guy is like balancing a ball on a ball. 4th position is where 3rd used to be (ish). It blows so free it is intense (and really hard to stay tonally centered... If only I had valves... Then after talking to people at work about what I was trying to do, two trumpet players at work bail because they weren't "current". But, I find a friend with a trumpet in his closed under an inch of dust. Sweet! Spend two weeks learning to play trumpet, record the trumpet parts (in a few segments if I'm honest) - load it all into Adobe Audition (oh, yea... a new software package to learn...). Mix and fuss and re-record and fuss and repeat. FINALLY got something passable enough for the work presentation. THANKS SEB!!! It was super fun! A crapload of work, but really fun! Might need to pick up a trumpet sometime ;) F
awesome stuff, quite the adventure you've had! fun fact, the first ever audio software I used was my dad's copy of cool edit pro which is what Adobe audition was before Adobe bought it. I'm sure it's come a long way since then!
I’m very curious as to what you use to get your pedalboard working with your trumpet. That and the mic setup you are using. Thanks for making amazing content!
Been messing with an Octave down plug-in to try make the Viola sound like a Cello/Bass, not super realistic sounding yet - but defs gonna give that plugin a go - thanks for the content!! Super interesting/useful/entertaining!

So, is he saying that I, as a tuba player, can make my BBb instrument play as a piccolo trumpet? Jokes aside, it is nice to see how he manages to get the bass voice in his pieces.
I tried pitch-shifting a regular Bb trumpet up one and two octaves and it sounds like shit. The same recording sounds like a magnificent trombone an octave down.
I've been trying to do what you do with the not mellophone with my saxes and it always sound off in some capacity. I cant believe I didn't think about the tone difference and mixing it differently. gg my life
Up until very recently I was using an SM58. Pretty cheap and incredible quality and durability for the price! The one thing to watch out for with it is the distance you are away from it. Further away will sound more bright and closer will sound more warm, erring on the muffled side.
Hey Seb, any ideas on the other way around? I am a tuba player and want to record some of my brass arrangements but don't know how to get the same technique to work the other way around. Would love some advice!
Hey y’all! I’m trying to start recording multitracks and I’m having issues with the quality of sound I’m getting in my room. What can I do to improve the tone I’m getting in my room for recording? I play euphonium and am recording in my spare room, there’s some extra blankets and stuff strewn around so that may be a cause? Any tips on how to improve the sound in a room are greatly appreciated. Thanks!
It's just the stock logic pro plugins. Though I like to think I play pretty in tune anyway so that's probably the key to making it sound natural, not having much pitch correction to begin with
I really, really enjoyed any Video you've done till now. Really!! But did you say, "A Tuba is basically just a massive Fluegelhorn" ? Did you really say so ? You must not do your videos while drunk.... Or maybe it's the virus ? :-o
I think that statement is quite accurate. They both have a very similar bore profile (cylindrical for about 30% of the tubing length, then conical), and a similarly shaped mouthpiece. There are even some flugelhorns with 4 valves, although none of them compensating to my knowledge.
@@TheVirIngens 30% is a lot. It's like 5% for a rotary Flugelhorn (leadpipe bore is tapered) and surely no more than 25% on any full-size Tuba. 30% is like Mellophone territory, or a marching Alto Horn with the Eb slide.
I hope this series sticks around, suuper entertainment
Seb: This is not a mellophone!
Seb: *describes a mellophone perfectly*
Dang I thought you were just lipping down two octaves on the fluglehorn this whole time
You can still believe in the magic…
Same bro…
I really like this kind of video and I really hope you decide to continue with the series.

Amazing stuff, I'm glad to have helped in whatever way! The lack of gigs is indeed a shame, but gotta keep playing for when they come back ;)

The Sousaphone is a Tuba that you wear, which is cool
That's the first Bach Strad 37 I've seen in 20 years without a reversed Blackburn lead pipe.
yea no this is really freaking cool, looking forward for this series!
Such a fab tip. I'm going to crack out my old saxophone quartet arrangements!
Do it!!!

that's uncharted territory for me I'm afraid, but best of luck with it, I imagine it could work with the right amount of tweaking!
1:42 That's an Eb Alto/Tenor Horn with a Front Facing Bell
You should run a composition competition like Christopher Bill's but for Brass ensemble rather than just tbns

Hmm, I tried that with trumpet, I can get down to euphonium range but not tuba: too nasally tone. Some eq kinda helps the bore problem.
Love to hear stuff like this, keep it up!
Bravo j’aime le français dedans .
Well done love your work anyway !
A great video, and a great channel. I just found you a few days ago, and you are criminally under-subscribed! Keep up the great work man :)

Have you tried pitch shifting the other way around? Say, if a Tuba player wanted to sound like a Flugelhorn.
If you wanna send me a tuba recording, I'll give it a go…
can confirm, doesn't sound great
I tried pitch-shifting a regular Bb trumpet up one and two octaves and it sounds like shit. The same recording sounds like a magnificent trombone an octave down.
I've tried it both ways, lower sounds great, higher sounds terrible. There might be a way to make it sound good, but its definitely not as easy.
Can confirm, shifting brass up sounds like a constipated duck. 🦆 Lack of overtones maybe?
Suuuuper Tips thank you dude!
Nice vid. I am thinking about getting a secondhand Bach Strad 37 lightweight. Can’t go wrong
Awesome!!
You sound like Jason Statham. Nice playing, man.

if you had a mellophone it would fill the box
Ah this was so cool to watch! The brass world is crazy cool - I dig your editing too 😂
Cool, Seb! Great vid. I'm interested in recording myself for my own arranging. Could you give me some tips on microphone selection?

Quite a name...

Where is your soprano trombone from? - I want to get one but I seem to be unable to find any that I can get shipped to Australia sadly...
Indefinite loan from an old trumpet teacher. Afraid I can't help you out there bud
nice
Surprised that the overtone series sounds right. Most transopsers mess that up
My trumpet has a 5C mouthpiece.
Hey Seb, any ideas on the other way around? I am a tuba player and want to record some of my brass arrangements but don't know how to get the same technique to work the other way around. Would love some advice!
Can't say I've tried it, but have a go and let me know. In theory it'd be the same process but up 2 octaves instead of down…
Noice!
I'll admit, it took about 10 tries to pause it so I could see what it said...
This is a real begginer's question, but how is the transposition in the tuba, flugelhorn and mellophone?
Have you ever tried playing on a normal trombone or tuba before?
Trombone is ok but my lips are way too small for a Tuba...

Are you playing loud enough?
why not uses all the parts on the trumpet and then change the way it sounds?
Is the solo horn tuned in F or Eb?
