Passed my test 1st time last Thursday after 17hours of lessons and watching most of your videos countless times. You are definitely helping lots of people pass. Keep it up 💯
If you need to accelerate you still need to downshift so as to not lug your engine and create repairs that are much more expensive than the price of fuel
You want to stay 2k rpm no higher than 2.2 and you're good, if your rpm is low but throttle pressure is high, more fuel gets used up than going that speed 1 gear lower
Oh man, i passed my driving test 2 years ago because of you, learned how to parallel park, go uphill in heavy traffic, engine brake on a very steep downhill all because of you, and now i want to be able to accelerate fast when i'm trying to overtake and do it smoothly (no jerking motion) and here you are again, teaching me! Thank you so much for all of your videos. Love from Philippines.
I love accelerating my Ford Fiesta eco boost in 2nd gear, impressively powerful with fair amount of torque and the sound of the engine is terrific but the MX5 is lovely.
I only discovered your channel a few months after passing my driver's test, but it is still fascinating to learn and continually improve my driving as I'm just beginning!
This is probably the most informative car video I’ve ever watched. I’ve only ever driven automatic cars but my partner is super into performance driving and I would always look like a deer in headlights whenever they would talk about how an engine works and all the cool stuff a car can actually do. I think I’m a pretty smart cookie but I just couldn’t comprehend how all the parts work together and the visual demonstrations were super helpful
love you Sir, from Germany! My instructer is not patient and does not have understanding why I am rushing etc. But you helped me so much to understand my mistakes. Keep posting videos please!
Richard.... I can't thank you enough for these videos. I passed today with 0 faults and I couldn't have done it without you, so thank you for everything, and keep doing what you're doing because I know that you're helping many more people!
When the market settles and my finances are right, I’ll know a lot by the time I buy a new manual car. I’ve had 2 cars both automatic and I’ve been learning a lot with your videos. Thanks for the presentations 🙏🏾
This is brilliant content, showing people more than just the bare bones to pass! Hopefully videos like this will help people to genuinely enjoy driving too, rather than just tolerate it!
The best explanation about gears I've seen so far. Even better than Engineering Explained. I personally prefer to do rev matching between the 3rd and 6th gears but I guess there could be a need to go down to 2nd gear more often in cars running smaller engines. Excellent job.
You really do have a video for everything! I passed a few weeks ago (with lots of your help!) but I'm now kind of struggling with downshifting to overtake, so this helps a lot. Thank you!
Managed to pass last wednesday despite having quite low expectations going in. Had my first solo drive earlier today and in a way I still feel like I don't belong on the road at all but I guess I'll improve over time, as many have said you never really stop learning. Just want to thank you for these videos they have been very helpful and I'll keep watching them in the future.

@@ConquerDriving Thanks a lot!! Your videos have been a big help as well. My biggest lesson from the whole experience was to not overthink things, take it easy but be cautious
Hey Richard! I passed last week and I want to say a HUGE thanks. You’re my favourite channel to watch and I’ll stay tuned every week to keep learning!! I will use your confused link in the description when I’ll be looking for a car too :) THANKS!
I got my license in an automatic in November. However we have a manual at home so immediately after passing I started learning manual. I don't get to drive much, because I live close to the city center. Right now my only struggle is going from 5th to 4th when exiting the highway. 6th to 5th is easy enough. When I do drive it's mostly in the city so gearing from 4th down to 1st is no problem, because I've done it so many times over and over again. Now I just need to master 5th to 4th.💪
I’m 57 years old and have been driving since my early twenties. So a bit embarrassing to say that these videos and Richard explanations have reinvigorated my driving I have always loved driving and will often go out for a spin just for the pleasure. But over the last 10’or so years i slipped into dual clutch cars and became quite lazy Just recently i have purchased a little sports car and it’s manual and i realised that my gear changing technique was appalling! Two things i’ve now improved thanks to Richard are speed of up shift (not coming off the gas until the clutch is fully in) and heel and toeing. What a difference it makes. My heel and toe technique is a bit slow and i really have to think but it’s soooo much smoother and so satisfying. I suspect it’s also better for clutch wear. So finally i’m beginning to feel worthy of actually having a sports car Keep them coming
Ayye, imo you're channel provides the best content for people who have passed their test aswell as those who haven't. I love learning new things and having explanations from ya
I've been driving for one year now, and I still don't understand what rev matching is. I watched A LOT of your videos and it did definitely help me learn all the necessary skills needed. I feel like I'm a bad driver for not knowing this for a year now
You aren't! My mother who has been driving for almost 40 years now didn't know what it was and i would consider her an experienced, good driver (live in Canada so there are alot more automatics but she has driven and currently drives a manual). She usually doesnt go down in gears and if she does she lets the clutch rev match :) Maybe i can explain rev matching (challenge accepted) When a car is in motion and the clutch is engaged, driving like normal the speed of your transmission have to be at the same speed as your engine (this is why if he floored it in 4th gear his RPM's didn't shoot to the moon immediately but instead has to increase the speed of the transmission and by extension tires which is difficult like he mentioned ). This is also why if you rev your car and just drop the clutch when parked your car will go ballistic, the engine is moving at one speed and the tires/transmission is moving at another speed (or not at all) and you are connecting the two causing that power to be transferred to the clutch and transmission instantly, your clutch cant handle that and will slip and and catch and slip trying to get the tires/tranny to match the engine. If you slowly lift your foot to the bite point you aren't slamming the two together but letting the two match speed slowly! Now if you tires are already spinning instead of letting your clutch match the two speeds (when in motion it is almost always the engine that will change speed to match the tires unlike when you are moving away from a stop) you can instead increase the speed of the engine yourself by giving it gas so when the clutch meets the engine they are going at almost the same speed :)
Thank you for the detailed explanation! I forgot to add in my comment that I didn't watch the full video as I was commenting. When he was demonstrating rev matching, the 2nd one, where he slowly lifted up the clutch until the revs went up, and just held it at that point, and finally lifting up the clutch, is the method that I've been doing when rev matching. I saw it in his other videos, but I was always thinking that I am doing it wrong and was afraid that I would damage up the clutch in long term. So I stopped doing it and when I decide to go in a lower gear, I would just make brake slowly, but not entirely that I would affect traffic, and make sure the speed and revs match the lower gear.
@@aladyoullprobablylike1575 i think that method is what most normal people do, to my understanding that adds a negligible amount of wear on the clutch and is designed around taking it :) The only time i ever downshift while im moving is if i need the power to accelerate quickly or i am taking a corner but in that instance my speed is low enough the clutch has to do almost nothing! Something driving school taight me and my driving examiner even mentioned is how using your brake or slowing down unnecessarily can create a hindrance on the road so it's my preference to put a little more work on the clutch (unless its going to have to rev up to like 5k but you probably shouldn't be shifting that low if thats the case XD) then slow down if its not needed :)
You don't need to know what rev matching is to be a good driver. This is an advanced driving technique mostly for enthusiasts these days as you don't need to do it. This video may help th-cam.com/video/-RnPUq2yut4/w-d-xo.html
@@greatmatt301 th-cam.com/video/_hQZpJXsRnw/w-d-xo.html this video explains probably the best how to revmatch. Letting out clutch slowly wears the clutch more than revmatching. Also i barely need to use brakes at all cuz i revmatch to lower gears. If there is no traffic behind me i might sometimes downshift couple times to red lights and end up at the light without having to touch brakes at all.
part of the watching these for fun group!! passed this morning with 0 minors and im in shock and over the moon. never thought I'd even attempt to learn to drive, let alone pass. this has been my favourite channel to turn to these past 10 months and i have learned so much - can't wait to learn so much more. thank you very much Richard !

I'll leave you with this: when I passed my test, my examiners words were: "so you've passed, which means congratulations, now you can learn to drive"
Wow. This is such a great general video for beginning drivers as well as some more experienced drivers. Very comprehensive, yet concise. Well put together.

Hi Richard I’ve been watching your videos for the past few weeks to help me pass my test, I just want to say a hue thank you for all your advice and help, with the help of you and your videos I passed my test yesterday. I have been given your TH-cam channel to friends who are just starting their lessons, Thank you again and keep posting your videos. Kind regards Jo
Very well explained as everything on your channel is, passed my test a few months back after watching your videos, they helped me out a ton! thank you!
If I have massive ratio changes I tend to go into neutral before the next gear. E.g. I'm bombing off the lights in my mini cooper, but there's a long straight flat road with a 30 mph limit. I can rev first gear, but then go into neutral to wait for the revs to fall for 5th or 6th at 1200 rpm, which is fine for holding a steady 30 on a level road using the least fuel. Some people call it double declutching, and is mostly unnecessary in a synchronised transmission, but it does help prolong their life for large ratio changes as a Citroen I had developed that rattling synchro sound if I didn't do it.
I'm crazy about making the synchros last forever, so unless I'm in a real hurry, I will double-clutch when downshifting. Say you're at 4th gear & 30 mph. The input shaft is spinning fairly slowly, and as soon as you put the gear into neutral, it will start to slow down even further. But lower gear means input shaft needs to spin faster (same 30 mph), so any attempt at putting into a lower gear means synchro has to work at it. From 4th, clutch down (can be made optional), drop it into neutral, *clutch back up* (flywheel is now connected to input shaft), blip the accelerator to spin everything faster, clutch down again, put it in gear (2nd, for example), then do the rest.
I managed to pass first time 2 weeks ago and your videos have been so helpful! Do you think you’d enjoy making a first car buying guide? I’m 28 so a bit older than the average passer…
Has anyone ever told you you look like Connor from the video game Detroit Become Human? Absolute double. But anyway, love your videos man. Explained very well and have been very helpful
@@ConquerDriving he's a handsome chap. But thanks again for these videos. My test is up at the end of May and I'm finding your videos very informative. I hope good luck comes your way for sharing this knowledge with us.
I have a 1.5 turbo focus and I HATE the feeling of putting me foot down in a high gear XD almost nothing happens and it just feels like the engine is suffocated..... Plus rev matching down a couple gears is very satisfying
I'm only used to older cars with bigger engines, so this may not work as well in something from this century, but I found squeezing gently until you feel a response then flooring it was more effective than just stamping on it straight away.
I can reverse easily to short distances like for parking or sometimes giving someone way if I've better space. But a few times, I needed to reverse the vehicle a long way & that's where I felt it going all over the place. Please make a video where we can see a long stretch of reverse a car.
Amazing video Richard, I'm still fairly new on the road and I've been struggling to understand how the car fails to pick up speed in higher gears This answered it perfectly! As well as how to downshift to pick up speed of more quickly with an incline and smoothly transition your clutch doing so Since those drifting lessons you are turning into quite the driving enthusiast!
Just passed with 3 minors on my first attempt! As well as the lessons I could get with tight availability over the last month, your videos have been super helpful and I recommend you to everyone I know coming up to their test. Understanding how and why things work really make driving so much simpler and helps you really be in control of the car! Thank you so much for all your help!
Nice video brother you are my favorite driving instructor TH-camr brother you have lots of experience in this field that's why I am asking you questions please tell me some times while driving some smoke came out from the smoke pipe and it creates lots of smoke and pollution why would this thing happened and how would we avoid this thing from over car's please tell me God bless you brother
Thank you for watching, there are many reasons why smoke can come from a tail pipe, too many details for a comment. But if it's cold then some white smoke/steam is normal. Blue smoke is bad.
Awesome, this is the video I've been needing for a while! Sometimes I want to pass a slower car or truck on a divided highway, but find it intimidating to change into the passing lane when there are other cars there. The reason I find it intimidating is because I'll be in 6th gear, which doesn't allow for much acceleration, and I'll need to accelerate quick in order to match the speed of traffic in the passing lane. After watching this video, I understand now that I should probably drop down a couple gears. Obviously, this isn't a problem when I drive my automatic car, but I wasn't sure what to do with my manual. By the way, if you could make a sequel to this video, where you show how to drop gears in order to pass slower traffic on the highway, that would be super! As far as rev matching goes, some newer cars definitely makes things easier! My 2020 Toyota Corolla hatchback has a feature called iMT (intelligent manual transmission). It blips the throttle on downshifts, and it works incredibly well. I would be way too nervous to attempt heel toe, so I'm glad my car takes care of the heel part for me! Do some makes and models of cars in the UK now come equipped with an auto rev match feature?
Yes, auto rev matching is starting to become available. The Nissan 370z was the first car I know that had it. If I think I will overtake I select the power gear before I make my decision to go so I'm ready.
@@ConquerDriving Thank you for your advice! I'll start practicing downshifting when I need to pass. As always, I want to thank for taking the time to reply to my comments. You make the best driving instruction videos on TH-cam!
Oh like a bicycle. On one end of the gears for a bike your engine feet go around many times to turn the wheel only once, making hills easier but you go slow. At the other end of the gears on a bike your feet go around less next to the wheel, you can accelerate a lot faster but it needs more power, to the point your legs can't give enough if you're trying to accelerate up a hill. In a car, you can make the engine work hard to accelerate faster in a lower gear, like forcing yourself to pedal hard for the speed on a bike in the wrong gear.
Hi RIchard, hope you are doing well. Thanks for another superb post. I learned rev matching from your channel about a week or two back and am able to execute it fairly well except in one situation: when I am very slow on third gear and shift down to second with a rev match the car tends to speed up a little (not much of a jerk). Is rev matching unsuitable in such situations or am I making some mistake? No problem doing this when I am at speed on fourth gear and shift down to second (which helps a lot when I am climbing a flyover with traffic on it). Would be grateful for a response.
I'm a new-ish driver (only have 2+ months of experience total, a bit over 1k kms on my new car) and I finally understand why my car jerks a little when I'm slowing down from 3rd to 2nd. Thanks a lot! You forgot to mention that heel-toe method can be dangerous for newbies, and on certain cars it's very hard as gas and brake pedals can be at very different heights (ex -- my '97 Audi A6 C4, gas is almost all the way down to the ground compared to the brake pedal). And a little tip for you: couldn't help but notice a little difference in lighting when certain pop-ups appear on the screen, to get rid of that, change your rendering settings to "software only", will increase rendering times, but will help you get rid of the lighter-darker scenes in the same video fragment :)
Thank you for the tip, the different lighting thing seems to have fixed itself in my latest videos I've rendered (work work 6 weeks ahead) but I'll check that out. As for heel and toe, yes it's best to learn this when no one is around. It's is possible to heel and toe in cars with different pedal heights, old cars have a lower gas pedal too.
It depends on the corner if you can carry that speed in that gear sometimes you can get away with going 1 gear higher and balancing on the throttle all the way threw gets me way better times

With the price of fuel i am happy to trundle along in the higher gears
Good point.
Your gonna cause damage eventually

Thats why love diesel power!!! A lots of torque !!!! C250, 204 HP, 500 Nm, 🌋
Very well explained as everything on your channel is, passed my test a few months back after watching your videos, they helped me out a ton! thank you!
I'm very pleased to hear that!
I've been waiting for this video!!
Here is my video on double clutching that you may find of interest: th-cam.com/video/wxxJeHHWXZE/w-d-xo.html
To be fair, they will most likely outlast the rest of the vehicle on most cars without trying to be careful with them.
@@ConquerDriving I did start out with, "I'm crazy." (laugh)
Thanks Richard as usual 🤗🤗
Best explanation ever
hopefully to watch you on Tv soon Sir.
I managed to pass first time 2 weeks ago and your videos have been so helpful! Do you think you’d enjoy making a first car buying guide? I’m 28 so a bit older than the average passer…
Congratulations on passing! This video may help: th-cam.com/video/k3SCr4BSzYc/w-d-xo.html
Has anyone ever told you you look like Connor from the video game Detroit Become Human? Absolute double. But anyway, love your videos man. Explained very well and have been very helpful
That's actually a first I think, i don't recall anyone else saying that. I hope he is good looking then 😄
@@ConquerDriving he's a handsome chap.
Thank you for the suggestion, I may do in the future.
This is way oversimplified explained. Really well done.
Wish you bring us more hill and toeing technique
This video may help th-cam.com/video/-RnPUq2yut4/w-d-xo.html
love this type of content that is maybe more useful for showing off but still very useful
Amazing video Richard, I'm still fairly new on the road and I've been struggling to understand how the car fails to pick up speed in higher gears
This answered it perfectly! As well as how to downshift to pick up speed of more quickly with an incline and smoothly transition your clutch doing so
Since those drifting lessons you are turning into quite the driving enthusiast!
Haha, thank you. I think I've always been a driving enthusiast.
Brilliant video mate
I do thank u so much ,Thanks to ur videos , I have learnt so much from u , Thank u n keep going , I wish u see my comment bro .
Thank you for watching and you're very welcome!
this is seriously brilliant , wow
As usual class video mate
Can finally add my comment that I finally passed my driving test from watching these vids 👍🏻
That's great news, congratulations on passing!
That's great to hear, congratulations on passing!
Thank you for this Video! Very good explanes
Great techniques & explanation
Double clutching is my favourite way of rev match coz it makes you feel like you're in fast and furious movie lol.
Brilliant Sir Richards!!💯💯💯🇯🇲
Thanks for your teaching
Got my driving test tomorrow
I hope it went well.
@@ConquerDriving passed with 5 faults your videos helped!
I’ve been waiting for this lol
I just had to sub after watching...good stuff man
Best content. Learn a lot from you
That is such a well explained video
Oh like a bicycle. On one end of the gears for a bike your engine feet go around many times to turn the wheel only once, making hills easier but you go slow. At the other end of the gears on a bike your feet go around less next to the wheel, you can accelerate a lot faster but it needs more power, to the point your legs can't give enough if you're trying to accelerate up a hill. In a car, you can make the engine work hard to accelerate faster in a lower gear, like forcing yourself to pedal hard for the speed on a bike in the wrong gear.
It's exactly like bicycle gears. It's all to do with leverage.
Very very very informative video
I got my driving license today 🏎 💨
Congratulations on passing!
Thanks buddy.
I love your videos!
love your videos
Such a good video
I love this, thanks!
Another very informative video!
Love the blue guage clusters of the car at the beginning! What car was that?
It's a Citroën C4, I actually put it up for sale yesterday: www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202306158563716?atmobcid=soc3
Amazing video. Thx
awesome video thanks mate
Great Video!!
06:58 really quick downshift for power
Yes then lad 👍👍👍
When he rev match with the side of his feet reminds me of those initial d guys...😂
I need to watch that film again. I saw it around 15 years ago I think.
Low = high accelerarion, high = big top speed
