      rescaling's a mildly miserable task, the lubricants help

      Saw a small length of pvc pipe and put razor in that with bubble wrap or other void fill between the closed razor and the inner walls of the pipe, cheap and bulletproof.

    Hey Jared, why is the hole in my razor twice the size of the pin? Is that right? I took down a Wade and Butcher and got new scales. Pin and washers came with the scales. Will this work? Thanks

    • @thesuperiorshave
      @thesuperiorshave  6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I'd wager the pin you're using and the razor were not born together?
      Obviously, you don't want a big gap. Scales material can ebb and flow in size depending upon local temperature/humidity/pressure variances, too, so you want just a little leeway. For German razors and the German silver pins of modern make, I would say they've designed in ~0.5mm of extra gap between the inner hole diameter and the maximum thickness of the silver pin, so a timber/horn scale in a more hot/humid place won't run out of space.
      I have occasionally seen some pins have a little doughnut on them and I'm sure one could find such a little washer somewhere on Earth.
      As long as you put that pin in going nice and straight before the crimping, if you crimp off the back side and smush down the little rosette thingy, I would imagine it isn't going to move around.

      @thesuperiorshave thanks so much for you're time sir. I appreciate it. Yeah the pin I took out was the same size as this new one. So I guess that's how it was to start with. Idk.

    I have an antique German razor and the ancient scales are bent all sorts of crazy is there a way to straighten them back out? Also I have got a brand new Damascus steel razor on its way but it didn't include scales which is why I'm watching this lol I like the video I gotta get some scales for the new one along with pins and all that

    • @thesuperiorshave
      @thesuperiorshave  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the thickness of the tang of your new Damascus razor, and the distance from its pivot pin hole to tbe tip of the toe, are important measurements

      What is the scales of the antique razor made of ? If it is horn you can soak them in warm water for several hours just below boiling and use a Vice or press but making sure you use something in between the scales like a piece of cardboard and felt with felt side on each side of the scale and leave it for 24 hours. If not horn then you either learn to like the flaws being it is a antique or get scales the match what is currently on there which depending upon brand is most likely camel bone , Buffalo horn or ox horn and if wood and you feel comfortable with making scales the buy the wood and make your own scales. Be careful with the razor you bought without scales a lot of that specific type of metal is sold not hardened and is a type of metal bleaching opposed to it actually being Damascus which is forged folded and worked over and over keeping in mind they no longer have the means of real true Damascus steel like from thousands of years ago. The Rockwell hardness you are looking for for this type of knife is between 60 and 66 I make mine at 65

    If you put silicone rev under the jaws of the cutter let it dry with the jaws just opened so you can run a razor blade between them after it’s dried
    Cut the silicone, now when you cut the nail will be cot between the silicone
    No flying pieces
    Utube it you need to

    Hi I bought horn scales from eBay for one of my straight razor blade what's the best way to be able to mark where the holes in the scales go to be able to mount and peen the brass pins ? I have no experience with this and don't want to screw up the scales 😭😱

    • @thesuperiorshave
      @thesuperiorshave  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Measure twice, mark where you've measured via soft pencil, put the scales in a clamp and heat the tip of a pushpin/needle/etc. to make a small prick @ the relevant spot (to be drilled with drill press thereafter)

    • @thesuperiorshave
      @thesuperiorshave  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      would have to be a very very small one, but the device they use to start the process in the factory looks very similar (they're then hand-hammered on a small anvil, though).

    Can the customer purchase tougher scales if one breaks like that? Seems that would be my choice if I were having a breakage issue. Thanks Jerrod. Please excuse my ignorance.

    • @thesuperiorshave
      @thesuperiorshave  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      These don't break w/o user's help, but it is accurate to say you can 'help' these break in ways that no other model can be so helped. But they're the cheapest, too, by a long shot. Customers are voting with their wallets - they just don't know what they're voting for, beyond their assurance that they want the lowest price at all costs.

      How someone supposedly a professional vendor and moderator can derive from that view that they're assured the spine was lifted is truly astounding to me.
      Was the same lady I saw May 2017, and May 2010 for that matter, and in each case she was honing it correctly - spine and edge flush to the wheel. Thereafter, a convex bench stone is used.

    How do you center the blade? I did mine but it skews to one side

    • @thesuperiorshave
      @thesuperiorshave  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some timbers/bones/horns will be very persistent on that, just remember you have a hole 2x and a metal filling it and on each end there is a little movement possible of the pin in the hole, try to make the tension to the rosette on the first smack such that it centers. Some scales materials will only get their tightest w/o being centered and you'll have to choose a less pretty scale, more help guide the toe in/out of scale each time, or less tight scales. Tough choices, all!

  • @carlbowman3366
    @carlbowman3366 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    You have put together 12-15 of these razors yet you say you aren't certain how the rosette goes on one of them. I don't suppose you've ever thought to look at it before taking it apart?

    • @thesuperiorshave
      @thesuperiorshave  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They're already well hammered home when we get them, I would not be certain from looking at that which way they faced originally.
      The point was I'm not 100% certain (unless the Germans tell me themselves) if the little rosette's to face bottom-of-cereal-bowl away from or toward the scale.
      However, doing many many dozens since this video, I use one single rosette, bottom of curve facing away from scale, and it works just fine.
      On the "torpedo-ey" scales that have something more akin to a spacer than a wedge between their two sides, I use two rosettes.
      At this point having seen enough other videos and show-and-tell of installed scales on shaving-specific forums, I feel quite confident in my basic competence at scale pinning to be at least slightly above average, though nowhere near the old guy who ground for NTS-Solingen {those were always super tight and centered and didn't move toward one side or the other, across the brand, and they use a bunch of different timbers...terribly impressive}.

    What's the name for the cutting tool you used to cut the old pin off? I tried searching for "crimpers", "nippers" and "flush cutters" and couldn't find anything that looked similar.

      sorry...don't know! Bought the old fashioned way (in-person @ a specialized store, using my eyes towards the shelf of cutting implements). Try 'end nipper' or something like that. Any good hardware store will likely have many brands to choose from in the little tool zone.

      "I've smoked 'em for forty years, and I'm just fine."
      OK, then, we can therefore conclude the action is safe because you're citing one data point of the contrary outcome?
      "I was in a plane once, and it crashed." = Planes are by definition unsafe?
      It doesn't work like that, and if/when your scales break, your tune will change.
      It is simply a fact that using solvents, opening >240°, and applying pressure outside of pivot pin is something you can do as many times as you like on any of their other models with zero risk, while here that presents a large risk.
      But you do you, playa.
