I think HBO just had higher standards than Netflix, and probably only needed so many specials a year to meet the demands of a broadcast TV schedule.
The internet is great, but endless variety for consumers, and fewer gatekeepers for performers has diluted everything. At least when there were fewer options bound to fewer outlets, the product had more shared cultural potency, even if not all of it has dated well

I know she would cringe to hear someone say this but, she has truly been the voice of our generation. She put a great deal into the world’s consciousness about our generation, she raised awareness for feelings most of us were having and were frustrated with either not being able to positively express those feelings or frustrated with nobody hearing us or caring what our generation has had to say. We are the children of Boomers, we are the grandchildren of the Greatest Generation. That is a difficult act to follow and nobody understands that and expresses that better than Janeane. The oldest of our generation is nearing 60…it’s long since passed time for us to take over the world and the Boomers refuse to get out of the way. We got passed over.

And it’s gotten worse. I work near all the agencies in nyc and see all the models and now they’re all ugly TBH. Even skinnier than the 90s and all with weird combinations of things like albino skin or bad hair and loads of freckles with huge lips. God forbid they do regular beauty!!! Meaning someone you’d actually date. Also despite all the obsession with weight in the 90s, everyone now is fat! What happened! So depressing

I feel like a lot of comedy nowadays is mostly stories, and the stories are funny, and comics get hella deep. I really miss this type of comedy. Just crafted jokes. Dangerfield, Hedberg, Murphy, and so on. I love Segura, and the new style, but watching this I realize I miss this style.

That was George Carlin. She is a naturally good actress which helped in her standup but not really comic genius truthtelling-wise. Though she took active part in 90s alternative standup movement I would not go as far as to say she started it.
