I think it’s a rounded approach but lobelia cardinalis and Irises are good for excess nutrients. They can add shade as well if planted in the right spot too
They are chemical filtration, they have a place in controlling algae, the dosing systems are better in a fish pond set up, no chemicals are always better.
Great video mark, 🤔 well i have iris, lily's, corkscrew rush, small horsetail. But still having problem with the algae in the stream, not sure if it is because its slow flowing, giving the algae time to bloom ?
I have a massive blanket weed issue. I have two wetland filters and a huge amount of plants which are growing rapidly and the water is gin clear, both wetland filters together are almost the same surface area as the pond. I do not over feed the fish and it is not heavily stocked yet I have to remove the blanket weed daily as it grows so fast - I have two air stones and a big air pump and a waterfall circulating 12,000 ltr hour, pond is about 20,000 litres including rainwater harvesting tank - any suggestions as to how I combat the blanket weed, I tried clover leaf with no results
Pea soup pond 😢 I can’t see a inch deep. like a doughnut I changed my pond plants all at once. I’ve put more plants in got a water fall, UV light. Just can’t seem to clear it up. I’m thinking next step 20% water change every so often.
@@ThePondAdvisor 2 years it’s been in, I thought if it lights up it would be doing the trick, after more research iv found it may not be doing its job even when glowing. Will start with that Thanks
Do you cover Bedfordshire? We have a wildlife pool that has a 10 year deep layer of sludge.. I've got a filter running, but it's that bad I'm having to clean it twice a day.
I read that Hornwort releases a chemical that can stifle the growth of algae as well as other competitors. Combine that with the other benefits mentioned in the video and it has to be one of the best.
@@ThePondAdvisor i have yellow flowering Iris in my pond. I dont know what they're called but my pond was a dead algae factory before I put 9 Iris in. I have a Kockney Koi K5000v filter with a 55w Yamisomethingorother UV. The water was mega clear but the filter blocked within 1-3 days!
@@ThePondAdvisor thanks mate. brilliant video by the way. Best on you tube. I've also noticed today that there are a few babies in there and was wondering what to do with them . There was 6x shubunkins at the start and concerned it might become over populated.
Yes you can have too many plants, oxygen crash you want up to 50% - 60% maximum, fish will breed, they will produce hormones to slow the growth so providing you don't have a leak you will be ok for some time. If you want the best for the fish remove the babies or adults. Watch my too many goldfish video
I went to work this morning came back this afternoon and my pond went from clear to green as shit while I was at work I couldn't believe it. like first day it's been sunny and 68*
@@ThePondAdvisor I was actually really surprised with how effective the uv canister was. I got a 60$ 9watt from home Depot and in less than 24 hours it probably increased clarity by like 50%. Surprising given my pump is underpowered for my pond size it's probably 250gph on a 700 gallon pond going into the uv can and then going into my small bog filter.
So much information in the video. Plants have so many benefits to a pond. They add beauty, help with algae and I had no idea they help with the temperature they are amazing! So many to choose from too! Always a favourite are water lilies and irises for me
My pond is just a few months old. Lots of plants, lots of fish, plus a large UV / mech / bio filter that feeds a waterfall. I also dont feed the fish, they get all of their food from the pond itself. Water is crystal clear, but i do have a lot of string algae. This, if left alone, wraps up around the plants, especially the oxygenators and kills them off. I have found that there is no string algae around the watercress, so have just planted some more of this. Any ideas of how to get rid of this string algae ?(without chemicals as i really dont want to go down that route).
I have a pond that is 1 year old and has just started to cloud over with algae. Ive gone with frog bit , more marginals and barley straw to try and clear it.
I made a new water feature on my front yard that's about 2 months old now. I have quite a few pond plants and so far there has been absolutely no string algae, it's only the river pebbles that turn green. Is that a good sign? I like the look of the green pebbles but is there a natural way to prevent that too if I wanted to? I'm assuming more shade.
I made a 4’ pond less than a year ago, and it doesn’t have a filter / pump, and I have lots of plants and a couple of golden orfe. The water is wonderfully clear but I find that the algae / blanket weed tends to grow on the hornwort and millefoil so that it looks like green cotton wool. Is there a way of tackling this, or should I just keep nipping out the affected pieces? Also, I wasn’t feeding the orfe at all but then read that they’re more carnivorous so don’t tend to munch the algae much. This got me worried that I should start adding a little bit of food for them because I think they eat any insect larvae faster than it can appear! Sometimes I drop greenfly from my garden plants into the water thinking that might give them the meat they need. Should I stop feeding my fish?
Great question, I would stop feeding the Golden Orfe as you are then adding waste. Either that or start filtrating the pond water. Golden Orfe are very susceptible to low oxygen levels so I would be very careful not having any form of aeration on the pond. Hornwort is a very slow starter but once it starts growing it will outcompete the algae. Here at Pond College we use multi clear in Stillwater ponds to combat the blanket weed. Check out my multi-clear video. And also check out my algae eating fish video it may help you
Interesting video, I have a filtration system with marginals and water lily. I’ve been looking at floating pond plants and purchased a water poppy, do you have any videos on these or floating pond plants?
My new favorite plant has been bacopa monnieri because it's extremely versatile and easy to propagate, and nice to look at too.
I am have some this year,
Just found your channel, it's just what I was looking for, so am now gonna binge watch your older videos. 👍
Thank you for watching and welcome to the channel
For me it's watercress. The roots are like cotton wool and filter the water amazingly.
Cheap to

Yes or the UV some algae is good, plus the fish can’t eat it in the stream
Watercress - with as fast as it grows, it has to be helpful!
Yes it’s a great plant for removing waste
I have a new pond ... Getting a little bit of string algae but the water is still very clear is this a good sign or should I take it out ?
Good sign, just make sure your on top of it, algae is good to a point

To create shade?
