That was very helpful thanks. I think it is far more complex than what I have really been wanting. All I wanted was something that recorded automatically the last few minutes and then gave me an outside view from the ground, so that I could see my landing or take off, without going through all those settings, similar to what FSX has.
Yeah I don’t think you’re alone! Though what they have made here is powerful, its definitely not something that has specifically been made for the consumer. I’m sure it will improve in time. They just wanted to give us it ASAP so we can do something which is also nice.
XP's replay system is beautifully simple! Hopefully MS will come up with something similar when they decide this is no longer an 'experimental' feature. In the mean time flight recorder and sky dolly are workable solutions 🙂
Agreed. FSX instant replay is so much easier. No remembering to start recording. Click Instant Replay Button up/down for length Play! And it would cycle over and over until you want it to stop, allowing different viewing angles. But, I don’t think it was saveable..

I find the flt sim replay is very good but my problem with it is unpredictable at landing. Some time I can land and taxi fine but other times that same replay will land and end up 5 or more feet into the runway surface. Actually as I watch your video, your plane is also below the runway surface by about 1 foot or so. Is there a fix for that.
Coming from X-Plane, this is such a crock of bologna. X-Plane implements it *right*. I want to record a flight and then play it back from a different vantage point. But it appears that some parts of the flight can't even be faithfully replayed, for instance, the weather requires keyframes, and then what happens at the keyframe, the weather has a jarring "jump" from the evolved conditions to the keyframed condition? Edit: Apparently the weather keyframe isn't even what it purports to be - it doesn't remember anything about the positions of the clouds, for instance, which i need for the effect I want to achieve.
Does this work for full flight?, and if it does, does it have performance issues? And the save as button saves it like a MP4 or you have to replay it on the sim?
I does but I've noticed it can become quite unstable when trying to play back/save a full flight. It does not record any kind of video, it records the flight path. If you want to record video you would need to use an external application to do so.

Been included in every game/sim I’ve owned since starting in the early 2000’s, don’t know why it couldn’t be included in MSFS from day one of PC/X box.
I find the GUI of this Recorder very... (beep). What is this? Is it made for devs? Horrible. Cant figure out how to use it but will take a look at your video now, hopefully It will straighten out things for me. =) Edit: Well, this was as bad as I thought. Lets hope theres something new for SU10, or should I grab some other recorder mayby? Just want it easy. Not an engineer, but a flightsimmer! =P
I believe it is the interface they use internally currently hence why it is accessed through dev mode. They released it for people to play with whilst they further refine it. No updates planned for it for SU10 by the looks. I use SkyDolly from flightsim.to at the moment which works fairly well.
Great video. I really hoped Asobo didn’t make the replay tool so complicated. For now, I’m just going to stick to the freeware replay tool which in my opinion is way better.
Help, my developer mode doesnt have that experimental tab under options, i only 5 options, and none say enable replay. I got user interface, sim, rendering, wasm and vr
Hey, could you make a second one. 1 year later it is still bad and confusing. You can not only capture a flight but if you are at the ground and go back at the begin of what you have captured. If you do something wrong, it put you back again in the air or a place where you crash. For me for some video's it is terrible and frustrating. I just want to see the the touch down outside after cockpit landing and not get dragged back in flight full back on final flying while I already landed. Sound confusing? Yes so confusing it is sadly and not even improved from 1 full year.
Nothing has really changed to warrant me making another video. Only tip I can give that's not in this video is - make sure you save the replay before you shut down your aircraft engines. I recommend putting any points of feedback in the official MSFS forums as they read everything over there!

The main problem is that it not only record but also a sort of rewind tool. After an IFR ILS Appr flight and set him back on final the airbus won't track the ILS LOC and GS Anymore. And in the replay it is also possible to click on some buttons what is ridiculous in a replay that you can still do things. And with 3rd party software the A32NX FBW Speed and even de Landing us incorrect. I came out under the map. For content creators it can be a great tool but there are options that really ruined my flights.
It's not intended for use as a 'rewind' tool. You also have to remember the underlying simulation of the various planes doesn't stop when you are playing back the replay which is probably why you see the results you do (also why you can move switches). It doesn't record the hundreds of different variables that a complex aircraft like the A32NX changes throughout a flight, it more or less just records simple variables like some lights, throttle position, gear, flaps. It is still a basic tool and nowhere near as comprehensive as what we see in other sims like XP11. In fact none of the replay tools for this sim can come close to other sims yet. Use it for a simple replay tool and you will be less disappointed! That being said I can't stress enough if you have constructive feedback to put it on the official forum.
Don't use VR so can't say I've tried this but I don't see why not. Essentially the replay tool is just recording the aircraft, camera movements and location. You could create a new camera track outside the plane and record that as you like.
Hi Gil, it's not recording a video - it's recording flight data to playback in the sim only. You need to use separate video recording software to record a video file.
You have to play them back using the tool in the sim. It doesn't record video if that's what you were expecting, it records your flight data and camera movements essentially.

It depends on the aircraft what it saves but in my experience it will not save your avionics setup. Generally more basic parameters like power setting, gear, flaps etc
Do you have to turn the engines back on after your flight for the replay to work or does that happen automatically? Also how is it with recording a takeoff and then watching it back at the end of your flight a couple of hours later
It doesn't seem to work right now, I recorded my landings with the Fenix A320 and PMDG 737 and it doesn't show the flaps, ailerons, spoilers,...etc moving. What a shame..
The tool appears to work, it's just not playing back all the elements that are present in these highly complex, custom aircraft - give it time, it's still in beta. I don't think there are any tools currently available for the sim that do that.

I haven't used this tool in such a while I'm not sure regarding DoF. Showcase cam works fine when recording a new camera track. Apparently this is the tool they use internally for their trailers!
haha, your aircraft taking off in the opening scene had its tires buried into the runway lol. How long can you record for? If I want to make a video for my TH-cam channel can I do an hour recording?

Yes - start recording another camera track and switch to that view. Once you've recorded the camera track when you play back the replay again you will be able to switch between the original camera track and the new one you recorded.

This tool doesn't record a video file as much more just the movement of your camera and aircraft. So you will need to use a tool like OBS for screen capture. If that answers you question?
Great tutorial It helped me a lot, but the final part which is the most important part that you did not explain how to export screen record as video file
thanks. so basically, you just need to start record and fly. if you want some angle you can change from the replay tool. you dont need to set all camera one by one.
I don't get why it's not just replaying what the plane does and that you can move free around it. Why do they make everything so difficult every single race game has e replay option and you can switch camera's why reinvent a square wheel? i don't get it. Great video tho!
Sky dolly works so much better IMO. Only replays the aircraft, allowing dynamic camera changes throughout the replay, without fuss. Only place skydolly falls short is by not integrating into the sim toolbar and UI.
I've not really used sky dolly, just 'Flight Recorder'. But I think it's basically the same. And yeah they do tend to work 'better'. I'm sure this tool will progress over time but the idea of this tutorial was to show people how to use it if they want and not necessarily compare it to what already exists. Thanks anyway.
this is no longer in dev mode options..as suggested by this guide... in 129.3 40th anniversary edition, and i'm not having any luck to find out how to use it now....even posted in steam forum...no reply since they decided to move comments away from the main feedback page...

Hi, really useful video. For some reason my recordings save as a. Json and whenever i try and load the clip back into mfs it doesn't allow me to. Is there any way to fix this?
Glad it helped! That's correct they should save as a JSON with a .ReplayDesc extension. However, I did just give the save/load feature a test myself and you're right it doesn't seem to be working at the moment! It seems like it is properly saving the data looking at the size of the saved files, however, when loading it doesn't seem to actually load properly. They've done this before where after an update some part of the tool breaks, probably best to wait till the next update and perhaps it is fixed then. In the meantime, SkyDolly or Flight Recorder from flightsim.to are great alternatives!
You can't record a movie file directly from the sim if that's what you mean. You could use OBS or Nvidia shadowplay or AMD relive etc though whilst you playback the replay.
It doesn’t no. The saved file is just a replay file that only MSFS can play back. You can record it as a video by using Nvidia overlay, OBS, Xbox game bar etc to capture your sim.
Hello, Thanks for video. In external view I cannot see the flight surface movement. Also the reply mode does not show gear or flaps retraction. How can i solve this? Thanks in advanced.
The same thing happens to me, when selecting external camera while recording "track 2", the view remains motionless while the plane moves away. Downloaded the game last week

I've not actually tried that as I've not done any in such a long time! I don't think it would work too great however due to the fact the scenario loads and reloads after every landing.
Thanks a million for this upload. I'm curious about the intended functionality in VR. I tried to playback my recordings earlier from yesterday. It just restarted my session and didn't appear to do anything...I'm going to take a second shot at it with VR and see what I can do, now.

Yeah I agree XP did it right! As far as I know this tool doesn't even record the weather just the flight path. I've not used it in a while though.

What do you mean you can't get the UI back? You will have to enable it through the experimental options every time you boot the sim in my experience.

That's normal, you can't interact with the plane in replay mode, if you want to change the setup change it before playing back

They have moved this option in SU10. Go to general options then experimental. You toggle the replay mode on from there.

You can yes but it will take a very long time to save I've found and the sim will be frozen up until it's finished.
I’m wondering is there a way you can start recording. Then once you starting to review it you can change your different views while watching the replay?
There is - though not really that intuitive you just need to record a new camera track.

Yes - start recording another camera track and switch to that view. Once you've recorded the camera track when you play back the replay again you will be able to switch between the original camera track and the new one you recorded.

This was all done in-sim using the camera tracks and the drone camera (mainly). Unfortunately, camera tracks are currently bugged and do not work.
I did have mine on but it’s completely gone from that area on developers any ideas where to find it

This tool doesn't record a video file as much more just the movement of your camera and aircraft. So you will need to use a tool like OBS for screen capture. If that answers you question?

It's got it's quirks, but so does every other replay tool for the sim. Sky Dolly is my favourite so far.
How many minutes can each track be recorded? What if Im flying for an hour?
I don’t believe there is a limit. However I have noticed sim stability suffers when trying to play back longer replays.

No, the replay tool captures your flight data essentially rather than a video file. To do that you'd need to record your sim using OBS or similar.

I don't get why it's not just replaying what the plane does and that you can move free around it. Why do they make everything so difficult every single race game has e replay option and you can switch camera's why reinvent a square wheel? i don't get it. Great video tho!

Sky dolly works so much better IMO. Only replays the aircraft, allowing dynamic camera changes throughout the replay, without fuss. Only place skydolly falls short is by not integrating into the sim toolbar and UI.
I've not really used sky dolly, just 'Flight Recorder'. But I think it's basically the same. And yeah they do tend to work 'better'. I'm sure this tool will progress over time but the idea of this tutorial was to show people how to use it if they want and not necessarily compare it to what already exists. Thanks anyway.

How we can load and save the video of replay
Using the save and load buttons at the bottom of the panel. You can’t natively save actually video recording for that you need OBS or something.
this is no longer in dev mode options..as suggested by this guide... in 129.3 40th anniversary edition, and i'm not having any luck to find out how to use it now....even posted in steam forum...no reply since they decided to move comments away from the main feedback page...

Hi, really useful video. For some reason my recordings save as a. Json and whenever i try and load the clip back into mfs it doesn't allow me to. Is there any way to fix this?
Glad it helped! That's correct they should save as a JSON with a .ReplayDesc extension. However, I did just give the save/load feature a test myself and you're right it doesn't seem to be working at the moment! It seems like it is properly saving the data looking at the size of the saved files, however, when loading it doesn't seem to actually load properly. They've done this before where after an update some part of the tool breaks, probably best to wait till the next update and perhaps it is fixed then. In the meantime, SkyDolly or Flight Recorder from flightsim.to are great alternatives!

Can you record the entire flight and then transfer that recording to a video editor such as Power director or Adobe Premiere pro for editing?
You can't record a movie file directly from the sim if that's what you mean. You could use OBS or Nvidia shadowplay or AMD relive etc though whilst you playback the replay.

It doesn’t no. The saved file is just a replay file that only MSFS can play back. You can record it as a video by using Nvidia overlay, OBS, Xbox game bar etc to capture your sim.

Yeah agree! I’m sure there’s a binding in the options but it doesn’t seem to do anything.
It seems to only work when the plane is stationary. Otherwise the plane just leaves the camera behind. Is there a fix to this?
It's currently bugged unfortunately, hoping the next sim update will fix this.

No worries! Depends on the aircraft - some do not have full compatibility with this tool yet.

What aircraft? Some are not fully compatible with that system as far as I'm aware. Admittedly I don't use it much though.

Camera doesnt work. Just puts me on the ground where my aircraft was when I started rewatching the clip.,
Unfortunately this is a bug that was introduce with SU8.
The same thing happens to me, when selecting external camera while recording "track 2", the view remains motionless while the plane moves away.

How can I set a static camera so I can watch from a fixed location? I managed to do it once but can't remember how I did it!
Open the camera panel and turn follow mode off.

I've not actually tried that as I've not done any in such a long time! I don't think it would work too great however due to the fact the scenario loads and reloads after every landing.
Thanks a million for this upload. I'm curious about the intended functionality in VR. I tried to playback my recordings earlier from yesterday. It just restarted my session and didn't appear to do anything...I'm going to take a second shot at it with VR and see what I can do, now.

Why does it not track reversers?
I believe it does with the default aircraft. 3rd party aircraft not fully integrated yet.
