This lady is the wife of the late D B Lama, who was the Inspector General of Nepal Police during a tumultuous period in the reign of King Birendra when royal authority was being challenged from outside by the banned political parties like the Nepali Congress and the various factions of the Nepal Communist Party, while the ruling establishment in and around the royal palace was divided into factions loyal to various members of the king’s immediate family, relatives and cronies. D B Lama had a meteoric rise to the top of the Nepal police and his fall from grace was as abrupt as his rise. In short he got caught in the crossfire of powerful factions jockeying for power in a country undergoing change from absolute monarchy to nascent democratic politics. But for his good fortune, he lived to become a respected political figure in Nepal after the success of the people’s movement of 1989-90 against the royalist Panchayat regime.
