l'Afrique nous parle dans des très profonds et nous demande de nous retourner pour regarder d'où nous venons et nous interpelle pour mieux sculpter l'avenir !!!!
Martin you're an absolute wizard....a stunning recording....and in the middle of a very humid jungle!! I totally love the music of this incredible people the Baka.
and transport all these people 900km on dirt roads to the nearest recording studio - you miss the point (we don't pretend to be professional video editors, we just want people to be able to see the images and hear the music)
You can buy their album, "Kopolo" which this track is off at baka.gbine.com. Money goes directly to the musicians in this video so you will be directly supporting them.
as ever, such a connection between movement, sound and all involved..the joys of one-take recoring, no dooubt?! Great! Very clear bush recording too.. Timbo x
Yes it's live. They don't have a "proper" drumkit, but I used Melodyne to turn the recording of the drums you see to midi and then used a sampled kit for the sounds you hear, but it is Sangoweh's performance you are hearing. I've heard him playing a real kit when he played at the festival we put on in Limbe (cameroontogether(dot)com) and it really sounds like him playing a drum kit. The bass is done the same, actually played live on a nylon guitar, but turned to midi which plays a sampled bass
Wow, excellent explanation. I was wondering where that tight base line and the extra drum kit sounds came from in a few of the recordings. I thought you'd simply superimposed it, but at the same time it seemed very much a part of the song. Well done.
Edit.?.....studio.....?....nonsense. music as close as it can be .......love it, hear it feel it . Its summer im putting a jumper on ive got goose bumps....
Only if I would have mastered singing and yodeling within complex polyphonic choral arrangements would I truly/ from my own experience, be able to appreciate what this Baaka community has accomplished here with the help of some extraordinary musicians, e.g. solo guitar, drums (there's even a hi hat ;), yes?) and off course fantastic technology for us to be able to participate, I mean, watch and listen and perhaps smile and dance? Love the 4 year old dancer, who puts his shirt over the head in one of the other clips. They probably start bobbing already in mums womb. Curious as to how long it took to get to this level? May they be able to preserve and continue their own tradition also, perhaps with the help of the producers...see Victor Sanchez and the Wirraraka and the concept of "anti-anthropology".
lol, you've done exactly right; its bad enough I'm absorbing this wonderful experience through a computer; I'm grateful you didn't water it down with "professional" studio edit photoshop blah.. true wealth has no measure
José Antônio Zé que maravilha. Me toca profundamente. É bom ver outro brasileiro com o mesmo sentimento por esse poema de amor que é a música Baka Alexandre Curitiba PR Brazil
vanessa bih yes they are, except the sticks have been turned to midi to play hi hat sounds and same for bass line played on nylon guitar but made to sound more like bass. The performance is live. A bit of overdubbed acoustic guitar on it as well.

Never seen or heard anything so lovely. Thank you for this gift to humanity. Essential joy in the midst of such material impoverishment.
