They could have mentioned the fact that Bartolomé de las Casas was a Catholic Bishop and therefore a genuine Christian. As a Christian he was condemning the Spanish soldiers for not behaving as Christians.
It's an example of just how awful the natives were treated that this person would rather die and go to hell than go to heaven where there would be more Christians. His experience with Christianity is that they will force you to convert or kill you, his clever response is humorous to those who recognize the irony of Christians not understand other cultures and their desires and preferences.
