i'm a jungalist, since 94...and have jammed much a Photek including this one. But it's not until 3 or 4 years ago, after having taken Nihon (traditional Japanese) Jujitsu and learned about Shinmen Musashi-no-Kami Fujiwara no Harunobu and read his "The Book of Five Rings", that i can truly appreciate what Photek has done here. Ni Ten Ichi Ryu, is "the school of the strategy of two heavens as one", which is the sword school Musashi created. and this track is the strategist's meditation on all the possible fight outcomes...before the fight. Ruminations of THE Ronin. The bass is the heart beat. The drum is the life blood. you cannot stop the flow of a river, there for you must yield and go with it...Sensie ni rei.
@@adriannurse5245 Unfortunately, from what i can tell, it is not a movie, but only made to look like one. Seems it was a video "clip" made specifically for Photek's Ni Ten Ichi Ryu track by Hiroyuki Nakano. That's how good he was, he made you believe it was an actual movie. Here's a little info on him. Apparently he did Deee-Lites Groove is in the heart too. He did however make some movies but none that look like that. Seems he got the assignment right however. That would be Musashi if anything. If you are looking for a good Musashi movie to watch, besides the trilogy (and reading the book by Eiji Yoshikawa, which is waaaaay better than the movies) try MUSASHI -The battle and truth of Musashi Miyamoto on Prime. It's very hard to separate the man from the myth. But of all the movies I've seen about him this one does a good job of humanizing him I believe. You can see where his inner conflict, over who he was and what he had to do, comes in to play and how it fuels his "beast mode" and he was a natural beast make no mistake about it. However even though he was a natural beast, he also learned how to master said beast and became one of the few Kensei's (sword saints of which there can be only 1 at any time and Musashi was the last). His name when he was young was Takezo, which means (strong & sturdy, terrible & tough) "warrior". Later, he took a different pronunciation (Musashi) of the same Kanji (Japanese symbol) that is used for Takezo. Musashi means "store house". So he was a "store house" of "warrior" wisdom. Read his books & meditate on his words and you will understand. But to truly understand, you must also take up the way of the sword while doing so. It is not something done lightly. Also, if you want to experience the madness of being such a beast watch "Crazy Samurai 400 vs 1"...all the way through. Once you pickup the sword against your brother it is not easily put down. Arigato Gozaimasu.
I don't think anyone has said it, but in some other video or upload of this, someone pointed out an interesting theory as to why Photek composed this track and the video behind it. Photek has stated in an interview he was always interested in the martial arts, and several of his track names always tie into Japanese analogy. This, from what one person theorized, while this video appears to be a montage of samurai, it is Photek expressing the story of Miyamoto Musashi and his training. As we watch and listen, the drum patterns begin to get more dramatic and heavy as we see him going from one sword, to his famous two sword technique, thus he elaborates his style, so does the music reflect that. Thus "Ni Ten Ichi Ryu"; "Two Swords One Heaven" To this day, no one has ever fully mastered Musashi's two sword technique, while Musashi's school does exist, and he has had disiples who have passed down his sword teachings, he never officially graduated anyone to mastery of the Japanese two sword style. Thought that last part would be a interesting bit of trivia :)
I think that may have been my comment from a long time ago on a different upload. The visuals and music go together very well. The drumming gets more complex as MM's sword technique does. But there is also a direct connection between MM's sword technique and percussion: supposedly the idea of using two swords simultaneously came to him when he was watching some drummers. If they could use two hands, why couldn't he? So the pairing works as part of the story. The other thing I pointed out in that old comment was that the video shows MM developing the two-sword style not out of desperation or because of defeats, but precisely because he was the best swordsman in Japan with the existing one-sword styles. Remember, he won that first swordfight! No one can beat him! But as he reflects on it, he realizes that being the best is no reason not to improve. Someday someone will beat him. So in fact his superiority in the existing style is a danger to him. It is precisely because he is the best that he must reinvent swordsmanship. Then he has the breakthrough while thinking about drumming; you see and hear this at about 2:40. That's it! Two swords! When he decides to experiment with two swords, he has his students help him figure it out; you have to imagine that one simulated fight in the dojo standing in for many, many hours of work. Similarly the meditation: he is visualizing how he will fight, how he would react if someone came at him with two swords, etc. He is always preparing, always thinking things through. The fight at the end seems to vindicate all his hard work. So I love this video not just because it has cool swordfighting and awesome music, but because it encapsulates the process of genius and innovation better than a lot of feature-length movies ostensibly on the same subject manage to. MM's writings are definitely worth reading.

"Ni Ten Ichi Ryu" is a track by the electronic music artist Photek, included in his album "Modus Operandi," released in 1997. The title "Ni Ten Ichi Ryu" is a Japanese phrase that translates to "Two Heavens as One Style" or "Two Skies, One Dragon." The phrase itself originates from a concept in the martial arts, particularly associated with the legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi. Musashi was known for his dual-wielding sword technique, where he would hold a sword in each hand. "Ni Ten Ichi Ryu" embodies the idea of integrating two distinct elements into one unified style or technique. In the context of the music, the title may suggest a fusion of different musical elements or styles into a cohesive whole. Photek's music often incorporates elements of drum and bass, jungle, techno, and other electronic genres, so the title might reflect his approach to blending these diverse influences into his unique sound. Additionally, the title's association with martial arts imagery might evoke a sense of intensity or dynamism in the music. ~~~s/o Chat-GPT

lisamaat It's pure magic, makes me want to become an astronaut. Too bad the aesthetics of that era died, today's dnb is just awful, except maybe the neuro side, I like how they tweak those reeses but the drum complexity is gone.
@multiple errors No, it was programmed in Cubase 1 on the Atari 1040 ST using only midi (Atari Computers came with onboard midi ports, thus had no audio latency because there was no actual audio going through the computer),to control an EMU E4 and an EMU e6400 rack sampler spitting out 20 output channels and mixed down on an old school Mackie 32.8 buss mixer, many people back then, including myself, used this similar setup to write Jungle music, color the breaks with the sampler, use the Mackie mixer for gain distortion and resampling and later, mixdown, the latter used EMU / Akai rack samplers and the Amiga A500 / A1200 running Med 4 or OSS.
Wish Photek still made tunes like this and others from around the mid 1990 s. In a league of his own then, with so many huge tunes with that Photek quality and superior production
In the 90s I always thought SPJ was the top programmer but once I got inside Photek from a physical perspective in workouts there was a deep paradigm shift and a new breakthrough in the way I approached the grid.
Certainly one of the best dnb videos ever. And possibly the only one not to feature a tower block or a sulky-looking model pouting at the camera! Dammit, why isn't dnb this good anymore?

How are blade fans and more , not talking about this track this is an awesome martial arts beat . perfect for all the action work that Wesley snipes did as blade, which I felt should of been added to the movie not only to the score
my one pf the best tunes
Man I LOVE this. Just wish someone would upload a HD version of this classic!
Stand out Drum n Bass track from the 90's.. bought the cd single 97...Still play it, timeless
We need this video in HD.
looks better this way man.. u just dont get it do ya
Yeah man. This one’s deep in my brain. Photek ❤
Masterful 🙌
The stereo mixing is sick on this song when listening to the cd version on headphones
Class
I'm listening to it since it was released and always when I'm hearing I'm astounded how technically complex this track is. It was ahead of it's time when it was realeased. And still is I think. I don't remind myself thinking the same way over any track I heard out of any electronic music genres.
Pure DnB in that the drums are doing all the work in this track. How many hours of pure programming?!!?
I remember when I was a teenager in the 90's and this came out and it aired on MTV at like 2am back when they used to actually play music. 😅
Photek always kind of has been doing this his way
That's what I respect about him.. so much dnb sounds like every other dnb song.. this is an example of how Photek stands apart, in his whole catalogue.. distinct
Much credit to him, he's from outer space, love it!
Awesome time signature.
i cant just freakin count the beats..
AWESOME!
The best aspect of this video IMHO is how he is showing you the stories of his battles through his meditation on them. He takes on one samurai, then two and then a ninja! This is an AMAZING video! Thanks for the post.
One of the most best ever d'n'b tracks i've ever heard in my life!!
been in to jungle drum n bass since 95 dj since 96 still buy drum n bass vinyl to this day i remember goldie saying in a interview that timeless is the best d n b album there is but i think modus operandi tops it
Robert Munro I am a MASSIVE fan of Goldie! Who made Modus Operandi? Photek? I will listen for myself because Timeless is exactly that, timeless. So that's a bold statement. I'll be back after I listen.
***** But Photek has samurais :-)
Plus the rings around Saturn is amazing, highly recommend it, even though I am not sure if it is on the same album.
ps Timeless is truly timeless.
***** that b.s.t.album is another classic
+UM Rings Around Saturn will always be my favorite Photek track, though this one is classic.
lisamaat It's pure magic, makes me want to become an astronaut.
Too bad the aesthetics of that era died, today's dnb is just awful, except maybe the neuro side, I like how they tweak those reeses but the drum complexity is gone.
this was programmed in octamed on a commadore amiga. That fact still scares me in 2017.
still untouchable.
Look up OctaMED buddy.
same squares in any DAW
@@nobodyneverknows Med / OctaMed don't look like any DAW you've seen. Look for a video of it.
Wish Photek still made tunes like this and others from around the mid 1990 s. In a league of his own then, with so many huge tunes with that Photek quality and superior production
Check out JoJo Mayer and Nerve also Mark Guiliana Beat Music! Real drummers reverse engineering electronic music. Insane.
Awesome breakbeats. Brilliant!
Just pure talent
That's inspirational, a classic.
In the 90s I always thought SPJ was the top programmer but once I got inside Photek from a physical perspective in workouts there was a deep paradigm shift and a new breakthrough in the way I approached the grid.
Everything about this is amazing
And Here I am in 2020. Oh the man the memories of this tune
So good, and so lofi! Boom music on the knife's edge!
Just fantastic - Got the single back in the day - Select-a-disc, Berwick St, London.
changed my life...
never saw the video before, but heard it plenty out at parties. Class tune!
A masterpiece! Astonishing work of art!
grand respect.... A monsieur.
Photek is a LEGEND. End of comment.
I love the part where this random human laid a proclamation, dipped, and felt fulfilled.
Timeless classic on any level. Video too.
my all time favourite inspiration
f yeah...photek!!!, its been years but here i am listening to yuh once again thanks to the cat who took the time to upload it in. bomber-claad!
Masterpiece
Certainly one of the best dnb videos ever. And possibly the only one not to feature a tower block or a sulky-looking model pouting at the camera!
Dammit, why isn't dnb this good anymore?
