    This bear has the smartest reaction I’ve seen so far, he checks side to side and up and down to test what’s happening as he leaves the edge of the mirror. Most bears just attack assuming it’s another bear.

    • @WFshorts
      @WFshorts 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +23

      He got lucky and caught the edges and was looking at the frame before noticing the reflection. He'd of flipped out too if he just turned left and saw another bear. It would startle you too if you were wandering around and a reflection that shouldn't be there suprises you, but not if you just found a random mirror, different circumstances.

      Nope. Not luck. My cats used to do that to the tv when they see birds on it. They pounce at the screen, and then when they realise they aren’t affecting them and are being ignored they start to frantically look behind the tv even checking the front every few seconds to see if they are still there. And there is another bear and mirror short. The bear does the same thing. Freaks and checks behind it.

      Because they see the reflection first. He came to the edge first and knew it was flat.

      Of course you are wrong. Reflections are not bear things. Two different worlds. For example, you look at a chair and you see that it is red or blue or whatever, its color, its decorations, what kind of wood it is made of or in what condition it is. The animals (mostly) don't care, the animal considers the chair as if it can eat it. And if not, can the chair eat the animal. If the answer is again no, then there is no reason for this animal to make any distinction between a chair and a pile of stones. This bear just made sure that there is no other bear there, so it is not in danger, so it may not care about that strange pile of stones that is for us the mirror

    This video proves there's a chance most, if not all, mammals, can potentially be self aware. There's a lot of latent factor that can't be removed, such as the specimen's personality or previous experience. This bear is likely more curious and calm than most of its kind so he did not attack the reflection, opting instead to check behind the mirror and even above. This doesn't mean that other bears (or maybe whatever mammalian predators) aren't self aware, they may just act without thinking, i.e. mostly by instinct, which doesn't belittle their mental capabilities but tricks us into thinking they are not self aware at all.
    It may be way more complicated than that.

      @campbellsmith403 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@campbellsmith403 When I said "this proves" maybe I should've been more specific. It's an interesting reaction 'cause, unlike most Bear-mirror interactions, this specimen didn't deal with the reclection in a unique way (i.e. attacking) but by approaching, smelling and looking around the mirror. If you read more carefully, I said the answer could change between individuals significantly.

      They found this to be true for silverback gorillas. The instinct to protect their families and display at ANY threat greatly outweigh the benefits of engaging with their own reflection. They will display and act aggressive every single time, just in case it isn't just their reflection this time. When they left the mirror there for months, the silverbacks did start to bring their families around to play with it though, while they stood guard. They can be smart enough to know their reflection and still not engage with the mirror.

      I remember a few videos of large zoo cats, and a couple of them, older ones with lots of life experience (and human interaction), eventually showed self-awareness with a mirror, while as an overall rule cats generally don't recognize themselves; but the potential for most of them as a whole to do so IS there, if you exercise their little brains early on and they are generally on the intelligent side. Seen a couple videos of house cats displaying this trait as well. There's not always a telling at what point the "ah-ha!" connection happens, but I imagine a good way to encourage it (if you wanna spend a lot of time trying) is to spend a substantial, and regular, amount of time in front of a good-sized mirror with your cat, while doing various activities with each other, as well as the mirror. After all, there must be a reason why the hooman is not afraid of the other rival hooman, isn't there?

    Imagine what goes through these animals’ heads when they attempt to engage with what they perceive to be a three dimensional world, and as they reach out to the reflection, they’re met with an equal, and opposite, reaction, such that, no matter what they do, they can never enter that world? 💛
