It makes me wonder whether the Five Emperors had ever pass their throne to their successors without bloodshed and force or not. I could think the people only elect their leader to rule tribes and confederacy based on merit besides virtue. I read there were stories of Shun being a scoundrel. He forced Yao off the throne (and left him to die in prison). Yu overthrew Shun and banished him. I think it sounds more accurate than the ancient mythical texts described them being wise, virtuous, and benevolent even a goodie goodie. Who could not want and fight over power in the Bronze Age. Then, more founders of later dynasties kill off pretenders, last rulers, and wiped male members to suppress the loyalty and support for the previous dynasties. Those men took advantage of those children to take power and usurp the throne for themselves even if the throne were not real treat for children. The Abdication system was to sugarcoat public sentiments and thought and quiet people from hiding out the real story of what happened to the last rulers.

The fly in the ointment, as with all empires, is the private ownership of the assets. Place all assets in a treasury bank, make its ledgers publicly available, and manage them democratically.
