    hi have a 530i e34 the same thing happened and had a broken shaft as well and was looking for a video to take out the key tumbler and saw the whole Bobby pin trick but the problem is the tension on the tumbler and did this trick and work Like a charm on to fixing it but thanks

    I haven't cut or drilled anything. First, I pressed the tumbler with a hairpin and then remove the shaft by pressing it and turning it clockwise.

    Hey, sometimes the hairpin method just doesn't get it done... I had the infamous broken ignition lock shaft problem on my '95 E36 & debris was in the way of utilizing the hairpin method to bounce out the ignition barrel. Was able to get the ignition barrel out using your method, without destroying anything beyond re-use. I now get to re-use same ignition barrel & original keys due to your method. Be patient. Cut minimally & test often, until it pops out. New shaft on order - $12.00. Thanks for posting..

    Thanks this helped. Once the tumbler is out I am still unable to remove the shaft, seems to be something blocking it form coming out.

      There is a small pin blocking the shaft in place. I don’t see the pin with green seal on outside on your model here. FYI for others doing job.

    Hey bro thanks for the vid, felt like crap doing it this way but the Bobby pin wasn't getting it and neither was the BMW tool (which is literally just a Bobby pin with a handle). But I need to know, where did you get a new shaft? It's part of the housing which I want neither the hassle of removing or the 200 odd dollar expense of purchasing.

    Hey man i followed your video and I removed the spring for the wheel lock. I have a new ignition lock cylinder but it does not want to fit in.

    you dont need to cut any thing, that little hole on the front of the tumbler is for sticking a pin in to unlock the tumbler from the housing

    Hahaha if the key turns then just use a Bobby pin with a small bend in the tip.turn the key then turn the Bobby pin and that's the right way

    Please help I have a 1993 bmw 318is and same thing happened I took ignition tumbler out thought it was tumbler but it was the shaft I don't know how to change this out without having to replace the whole Colum my car is set up for a left seat driver but I am pretty sure it would be the same thing as you did to get the broken shaft out and replace it with a new one which again I really don't even know where to buy just the ignition shaft I could use help! thanks

      Hi Emma, you're doing great so far if you managed to remove the tumbler. As for the shaft that sits behind the tumbler, I don't know if there's another to trick to remove it but it worked for me when I drill the hole under the steering column to get rid of the steering lock. Drilling the hole and removing the spring is not as hard as it looks. Just aim for the spot and use a long nose pliers to removing the spring and shaft. Good luck and let me know how you go

    Where is the video showing drilling the hole to remove the spring? Thank you,

    • @josifnguyen8911
      @josifnguyen8911 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Robert C theres no video showing any type of drilling. I only had one chnace to cut it and it worked for me. Where i placed the hacksaw on the body is where u should cut it

    Hey Joseph!
    Thanks so much for your video! Just curious... where did you get the unbroken shaft? I'm having so much trouble finding one. Should I buy the entire housing and remove the unbroken shaft? If so, how do I remove it? Thanks!
    Hannah

    Joseph, do you need to turn your key after you cut the side in order to get the tumbler out? I have a similar problem, my shaft and tumbler are stuck. I cant turn the key
