I've learned recently to not assume that fresh is more expensive than frozen, though that is often the case. Recently I saw a sale on fresh strawberries when I walked into the store (produce section is right by the door). I took mental note of that and walked back to the frozen section only to discover that the frozen strawberries were a good deal more expensive. I bought several packs of strawberries for the lower price, came home and washed/cut and froze them myself in freezer bags.
As I’ve been learning more from your channel, I have begun to do more “stock up” purchases in larger quantities when at a sale price. It took me a minute to layer in this frugal strategy, and it’s made a big difference in my wallet. Frugality is a journey and I’m enjoying what you and the frugal community are teaching me. Have a great day, Jane, Mike and puppies!
It frustrates me to death that people say using apps is too hard or takes up too much time, but they will scroll thru social media for hours and even interrupt their sleep to watch junk videos when they can be saving hundreds a month. Going into a grocery store these days you must not only look at the regular things you buy but also those items you occasionally buy but don't buy often because of the cost. I happened to scroll by the wild salmon filets one day and they had accidentally priced them wrong. A $20 filet was just a few dollars. I walked out of the store with 8. Great video again!
Thanks, Jane! Another great video! What I do is keep my pantry full with shelf-stable food that I eat routinely. If it's on sale, great, but even if it isn't, eating at last year's prices saves a ton of money today (just make sure it isn't going to go bad before you use it). Plus having a full pantry is good insurance for unforeseen events like illnesses, storms, food shortages and the like.
For my family of 4 I buy a whole chicken and turn it into 3 dinners: 1st night: roast chicken with potatoes and greens 2nd night: I pick the leftover chicken off the carcass and make a chicken stir fry with rice and greens 3rd night: I make a stock out of the chicken bones and use it as a base for soup. Lately we’ve had sweet potato soup and cauliflower soup from the Recipe Tin Eats website. So good and so cheap, and because you are using the chicken in different ways, you don’t get bored of it.
Totally agree with everything you said! You have to do the work BEFORE you even step inside a supermarket. Know the prices of your regular items so you can spot a bargain! Great tips as always Jane! 🙂
One of the biggest ways I save on groceries is by purchasing almost all meats from a local family owned/run butcher. They have weekly special “meat bundles” with items they choose, but it is much cheaper than buying those items individually and gives me a greater variety of meats than I might otherwise have chosen.
I have increased my stock up percentage to 40% of my grocery bill. I look for clearance meats each trip in the store, then I move on to the list of sale items. If I don't get any bargains, then I am skipping shopping that day/week. I compare 3 stores ads and if there's something that we need for our pantry, and it a great bargain I get 4-6 months worth of it. For those who want to save money on your food budget you have to put in your time to prepare for each shopping trip. Keep in mind that you are paying yourself dividends by keeping more of your money. Make it a game, how much can you reduce your bill(or save money). You can't expect them to hand you discounts, they are in it for profit, do your homework. I even searched out credit cards that give me 3-6% back at the grocery store. But only do that if you are able to pay the bill off immediately. ( I come home and move the money for the payment that day).
I am in Oregon USA. I rarely see the best bargains at the first week of the month. This is probably because grocery corporations know that many or even most people receive social security or pension payments at that time of the month and usually shop accordingly. Today is May 25th and at least one store has an excellent advertisement for a few excellent prices. So we are at the third week of the month with a holiday, Memorial Day, coming up. I stocked up on 4 items.
@@Judith-b3t hi, you need to save your shopping for when there's offers, use the websites and apps to determine when that is. They don't have sales to suit your time but there's.
TIP: the international aisle in the grocery store stocks a loose-leaf Assam black tea that sells for half cost of tea in tea-bags in the tea aisle.❤ 🇨🇦
I saw that Band-Aids were on sale at a local store. I went and checked the price on the “sale” item. It was $3.49 for 30 bandages, however the pack of 100 was actually cheaper per amount at $9.99. ($0.11/each versus $0.09/each). So a sale item might actually not be the cheapest per amount.
Here in Southern California, I am doing the same things you are. I shop my pantry 1st. Mainly, I buy fresh dairy, veggies and fruit. I buy the meat only on special or offer and stock up. If something is too high priced, I won't buy it, but substitute something else that fits my budget.
Very elegant look today. Good point about the Asian stores, with the influx on immigrants to our small town, we now have two of them, and we get some good bargains. Their pickling spice mix is a bit different than ours, so I made a small batch of pickled beets to see what adjustment I might have to make. It was really cheap compared to the other stores. And they have whole mustard seeds, black and yellow, which the other stores don't even carry, so I happily make my own mustard now, leaving out the turmeric (which most prepared mustards have), because I am allergic to it. And the cherry on top was when the lovely Sri Lankan lady, upon hearing of my dairy allergy, pointed out the coconut milk powder. One tablespoon to 200 ml of water, that container will last a long time.
You really do have to pay attention now to the prices. One of my expensive stores had meat on at a little higher price but the sale was: buy one, get one free. Nobody was picking up the meat, because they were just looking at the price per pound. It was far below other sale prices, when you considered that it was actually half off!
In North Carolina I shop at Harris Teteer. Some say it is expensive, but I look for BOGOs, sales, on line coupons and we get points off gas. Then on their credit card we get cash back. Another informative video Jane. Yes, sales offers are not always what they seem when cost, compared to quantity, is broken down. I too split my supermarket shops now that I am retired. Like you, I'm determined to beat these prices as best I can. Yes, it's surprising what reductions can be found during the last hour of the day, which I am now including in my shopping routine. Well worth it. Yes, Farmfoods often have good offers, especially on cheese, butter and fruit. I have their app and receive postal leaflets too. Good tip about the continental food aisles. Also about checking out the various independent food stores of this kind. Thanks to you both for sharing this. Was very helpful 🤗

Thank You for these tips. My husband always looks through the apps before we even make our grocery list. We price by ounces and it's amazing what these companies try to get away with. Have a blessed weekend 😊 and thank you both for sharing your knowledge.
My "expensive " grocery store has buy one get one offers that always beat the cheapest stores so I watch for those. Also some stores cut a lot of meat on Friday for weekend shopping and what doesn't sell is reduced on monday
Thanks for sharing these smart strategies for grocery shopping! I try to follow these principles. I have to put a little effort into using my stockpiles though. I just got some canned beans at $1 per can but I really need to use my older canned beans which I've had in my cupboard for ages. You've mentioned before how important it is to do this. A little care and effort makes such a big difference in my budget. I appreciate your encouragement and your good example! It's also always fun to see your dogs at the end of your videos - they're adorable! 😀
Omg you are always right on time I recently took a trip to an international store and I was able to buy a huge bag of rice for a fraction of the cost of my local grocery store 🤷🏽♀️who knew I certainly didn’t know but now the cats out of the bag ❤❤
I meal plan after looking to see what is on sale that week. Meats, fruits etc. That’s what I eat that week. Also if there are really good prices I try and buy a little extra for the freezer.
My supermarket has those basics around the outside of the store and that is the way I go first. Then I will check out the canned items, paper products and such. God bless.
I’m sorry I just had to add this I use to find myself in the past getting off track with my budget when I shop with my daughters now the question is should I just leave them home with dad or teach them how to help me with the budget and the shopping so I would give each of them a couple and I would stand at the end of the aisle to see if they could work together to find the item I would give them a budget (4 girls 2 are twins) by the way so we all work together to stay on budget I’ve learned that you can make shopping with children a learning fun game in the process your children can help you get through hard times and they understand more than you know ❤❤❤❤❤
I've been on a bit of a freezer cleanout challenge this month. I've managed to keep my groceries at $51.35 so far and I only need eggs to make it to the end of the month! I'm going to do the same for June because the freezer still looks full 😅
I am doing the same freezer cleanout, but I have chickens so I don't have to get eggs. I am trying to avoid the stores completely for the month of May. Might be able to get the first 2 weeks of June as well.
I have in mind what i simply will not pay for an item and as long as the price stays high I will not budge! 😆 For example, here in the U.S., cereal has stayed outageously costly! I just quit buying it! There are other things i can eat for breakfast so it's a want and not a need! Meanwhile, the cost of fresh fruit and vegetables are a real bargain now. So i pop by the grocers when i am running errands nearby to pick up the best offers on them!
The last point covers all the other points you stated at the beginning of the video. Shopping strategically has to be in play before you leave the house and as you go about gathering the items you need. Thanks for sharing. As always I learn something new each time I view your program.

Same shopping system here. That's the way👍 Checking home resources, checking offers, places, sales, etc. I know what I need and prepare and hunt hehe. Never miss a great deal. Always comparing. It's hard to miss a good deal, because it's announced honestly. With addverts, with paper catalogues, with i-net catalogues. People just need to look at it. And it's not true that it needs hours and hours( some people excuse). You don't shop the whole shop every time. Just several items each time. So it's not that difficult to open and compare those few items in your surrounding usually 3 to 4 different markets in the area of living. You two are doing great. Frankly, why to pay more for something when in the same time is less in another shop? May you tell me pls.,those supermarkets cards in France, are they valid for collecting points, even if you shop in the same supermarket but in different town for instance? Lidl I know you can use it ( scanning) everywhere. I am preparing myself with info.,because I will need it. Thanks in advance. 💪🥳
Having lived in the same place for decades, we have a good feel for when different types of items are likely to be on sale. We determine how much we need to purchase until the next likely sale and buy that amount for items that need our limited freezer space. Other items we may purchase more than what we think will be needed until the next sale since the next sale is likely to be not as good as the current one in the current economy. For non-perishables we put on the outside of the package the date it is opened and the date of when the last one was opened to see how long it should last and to challenge ourselves to make the new one last longer. In a notebook we track how long bags of dog food, tins of coffee, laundry soap, dish soap, etc. last and stock up when items go on sale. It seems too many people who complain about not getting the deals are not willing to put in the work to get the deals. Any retail establishment's goal is profit. Our goal is to get the best price possible. Game on!
I recently ran into a sale at Meijer for hamburger (93/17) for 84 cents a lb! Usually, it was 5.99/lb. I regularly check the discount areas at Kroger and Meijer.
I think of it as a challenge and I love to win the game. For me the best way to stay on track is to allocate $ per category that way I have free reign to stock up in an area up to that dollar amount e.g.: if I have $50 allocated to dairy and the things I need are only $40 then I will spend the remaining $10 to get an extra block of cheese or butter so the money in that category is spent.
That is why math is important in budgetting and a lot o common sense. I have a set of menu 's I repeat according to the season and I shop in different shops and in farmershops.
I live in Florida, USA. I totally agree with you regarding using the store app. Here, I receive store credit for shopping at Winn Dixie. Publix (a pricey more store) has incredible “buy one get one free” deals. I make sure I only purchase those and not do my general shopping there. Of course, Aldi and Walmart are my choice for things not on sale elsewhere.
Go to the App Store icon on your phone, type in the names of all the supermarkets you use one by one. Press download. Then open the app and set up an account.
Let TH-cam help you. In TH-cam, search “how to install (your store) app on (your brand of phone)”. You will likely find someone has made a video walking you through it. In my location, I find that the expensive grocery store has great digital coupons that save me a lot of money. So check your expensive stores too. Find those deals!
I used to meal plan and make a shopping list based on that but after a while I saw that I created a basic shopping list so now I just buy what's missing from that list. If I try a new recipe that I need a new ingredient for, I will shop for that but we are basically eating the same staple meals with emphasis on what produce is in season.
Looks like a patchwork quilt that you designed. It looks very pretty. I wondered if you had rescued some orphaned tiles from a remodel project or other frugal situation. Lol
Hi Jane could you show your ledger book and how you list your sinking funds? Trying to get a system to work for my sinking funds Thank you so much for all your help ❤
In the supermarket look on the shelves that are lower than eye level. The most expensive branded goods are put at this level. The lower priced items are often on lower shelves this happens in the UK am not sure about other countries.
Dead right, always check the price by 100 grams and what all stores are charging 😊 I like the store own brand as it is usually much cheaper and tastes the same✔️ Anyone for a ball 🥎 game with the doggies? Thank you Jane and Mike for a good video.
Freezing foods in freezers is great when stocking up except for that time that the freezer decides its going to quit working with no warning and you are frantically trying to save its contents from spoiling. Yikes!
Don't buy it just because it is cheap if you don't like it. Cook once, eat twice. .keep meals simple. Small treats are important . Divide large packets of crisps into smaller portions for packed lunches and snacks.

I recently ran into a sale at Meijer for hamburger (93/17) for 84 cents a lb! Usually, it was 5.99/lb. I regularly check the discount areas at Kroger and Meijer.
That is an amazing sale!
Thank you for another great video Jane xx
Love the channel! Been watching for several years.
Awesome! Thank you!
Hello Jane and Mike...❤from Brighton Ontario.
Hello there!
Thank you both very much
Our pleasure!
👍👍👍
I live in Florida, USA. I totally agree with you regarding using the store app. Here, I receive store credit for shopping at Winn Dixie. Publix (a pricey more store) has incredible “buy one get one free” deals. I make sure I only purchase those and not do my general shopping there. Of course, Aldi and Walmart are my choice for things not on sale elsewhere.
Thanks for sharing!!
I need someone to show me how to get apps on my iPhone!Love this channel ♥️
Go to the App Store icon on your phone, type in the names of all the supermarkets you use one by one. Press download. Then open the app and set up an account.
You will get more discounts with the app. Some of the best deals are digital coupons. Enjoy.
@@Judith-b3t very true
👍
Good savings strategies!
I would love to know the story of your tile wall behind you? Was it created by you?
We bought them and stuck them to the wall
Looks like a patchwork quilt that you designed. It looks very pretty. I wondered if you had rescued some orphaned tiles from a remodel project or other frugal situation. Lol
@@pamelastucker8335 it was 20€ per metre squared and the tiles are Spanish. We put them up ourselves
💖💖💖
Thanks Jane
Hi Jane could you show your ledger book and how you list your sinking funds? Trying to get a system to work for my sinking funds Thank you so much for all your help ❤
Each fund has its own few pages and I check monies and and out and running totals
In the supermarket look on the shelves that are lower than eye level. The most expensive branded goods are put at this level. The lower priced items are often on lower shelves this happens in the UK am not sure about other countries.
Good tip
Yup, here in US as well. Those brand name companies pay more $$ for those spaces.
Dead right, always check the price by 100 grams and what all stores are charging 😊
I like the store own brand as it is usually much cheaper and tastes the same✔️
Anyone for a ball 🥎 game with the doggies?
Thank you Jane and Mike for a good video.
Thanks
Freezing foods in freezers is great when stocking up except for that time that the freezer decides its going to quit working with no warning and you are frantically trying to save its contents from spoiling. Yikes!
Very true!
Don't buy it just because it is cheap if you don't like it. Cook once, eat twice. .keep meals simple. Small treats are important . Divide large packets of crisps into smaller portions for packed lunches and snacks.
