I remember this like it was yesterday. We were having a family reunion.
My brother was so incredibly sick with cancer, and couldn't hardly move around. Then, W. Morris hit that historic dinger, we were so excited and I was screaming and jumping around. He was in his wheelchair clapping as best he could, but had the greatest smile and look of excitement. He told me, "I am so glad I got to watch this with my little brother." And hugged me.
For just a brief moment, it felt like everything was okay in the world...

LSU fan here - we were on the golf course with a boom box radio in the golf cart listening to the game. We stopped in the fairway to listen to the last at bat. When Morris headed to the plate my bother said “we’re done, Morris had surgery on his hand and hasn’t hit a home run all year.” The group behind us was getting impatient because we all stopped playing to gather around the cart to hear the last out. Morris swung on the first pitch and Jim Hawthorne said it was going way back there - when Jim called it home run we went nuts on the fairway throwing clubs and screaming. We quit and drove to the clubhouse for beers and a big fat cheeseburger. My dad was still alive and played with us that hot summer day. It.
    Don’t. Get. Better. Great times!!!!!!!!!!!

Still Miss Hawthorne. If he wasn't declaring Jack Hunt scored on the Blue Grass Miracle he was calling out Lanier on a 'breaking fast ball'. Love the guy. The pitch dives into the dirt, great curve, like a tennis top spin forehand, and Hawthorne without blushing declares it a fastball. Geaux Jim. You always made the game better, even if you had to call one different from what was being played.

In a Galaxy far, far away a player who had had surgery on his hand returned to action in the College World Series to hit the first home run of the season for him. As Jim Hawthorne so eloquently said, “I can’t believe it.” It could not have been a Hollywood script, as no one would believe it.

I feel the same way. Miss him too. Grew up listening to him too. I don’t really care for Blair. They should have hired Lyn Rollins, in my opinion. Jim was a fan and it showed. Or that Blair doesn’t do a good job, you can just tell the difference.
