Stunt doubles were hired for the piano scene, but Hanks and Loggia managed to perform it themselves. The scene was choreographed by Paula Abdul.

The piano scene was real, the creator of the piano actually built a larger one the the one in the store so they could play the song which required 3 octaves to play. The actors practiced for 3 months and on the day of shooting dismissed the dancers that had been hired to perform it and did it themselves in one take. The original piano was still in the FAO Schwarz store until it closed in 2015. Penny Marshall videotaped David Moscow, the actor who played kid Josh, acting out all of the adult Josh scenes so that Hanks could study his mannerisms in each situation. That way he could mimic how a kid would act in the same situation and how he was able to seem like a kid so well. This was actually the same age swap movie that came out that year, which upset Penny Marshall because when she agreed to direct the movie she thought it was a unique idea.

    • @raputathebuta

Didn't Tom do something similar with the kid who played Young Forrest? So he could get the mannerisms & the way of talking down?

I have to say, watching it again after having kids, this movie falls much closer to the "psychological horror" category then when I watched it as a kid (those poor parents!).
At least it is a rare example of a movie in this genre that actually shows glimpses of the impact it has on people around him (that poor 'girlfriend' is gonna have some unique talking points with her court-appointed therapist).

Tom Hanks' childlike glee throughout the film is a huge reason why this movie is so great. You actually feel like you're watching a kid in an adult's body.

"13 Going on 30" has a very disturbing concept. In "Big", the Hanks character doesn't loose any time. He just wakes up the next day and is grown up. In "13 Going on 30", the main character wakes up and 17 years have past. She has lived those 17 years, but she doesn't remember them. It is super messed up when you think about it.

The floor piano scene is actually a Tom Hanks ad-lib, and not the routine that had been planned. Apparently the whole crew gave the two of them a standing ovation after that take. Part of the reason that Tom Hanks was cast for the part, according to him, is that he is that kid who refused to grow up in some ways, that he feels (or did some time back) like a kid in an adult's body. Others commented that his playfulness was infectious.

Its a little fuzzy but several years ago I watched a show about the making or something with Tom Hanks and he said the message for him is that as kids we yearn for adulthood but when we become adults we yearn for our childhood.

What I never understood was why Billy's parents didn't start keeping a tighter leach on him after his best friend just got Kidnapped for as far as they know. I know it was a different time, but like I said, his best friend just got kidnapped and there were a lot of high-profile kidnappings/murders in the 80's.

In the deleted scenes there is a background of Billy's disfunctional family. No wonder he just escaped from there.

There is a Rob Schnieder movie were he body swaps with a teenage girl. It's shit but luckily it concentrates on the girl being in the man's body as the other side of the movie could have been so wrong 🤣🤣

I loved this as a kid. As an adult it comes across a lot creepy and a bit pedo by the end, that aside it’s still funny and heartwarming. How confusing is nostalgia

I've been thinking for weeks now, they should get Tom to make a Big 2: Little, where he wishes he could be a kid again.

Tom played a grown up kid brilliantly.
Jared Rushton who portrayed his buddy Billy was in a few classic 80s movies....Big, Overboard, and Honey I Shrunk the Kids.

A very touching movie, and the performance that showed me Tom Hanks can act. Lots of fun. As always: finish Carpenter's Apocalypse Trilogy: 2) Prince of Darkness and 3) In the Mouth of Madness.

You’re wrong about the Social Security thing. I was super broke my first couple of years in college and couldn’t pay my utility bills all the time. Every time they turned off the power or whatever, I would call the company to set up a new account and switch 2 of the numbers of my social security number (so instead of 123 it’s132) and bam! Power back on. It wasn’t as easy to check that kind of stuff back then and could be attributed employee error if anyone ever cheked on it. I finally got a better job and didn’t have to do that again. It definitely wouldn’t work today.

I’m so old I saw this in the theater with my mom (80’s latchkey kid) I had to close my eyes at the HIGHLY questionable part. I distinctly remember a group of teenagers behind us hollering at the screen during this particular scene, I’m thinking WTH is happening? Now watching this with my daughter, this awkward scene NEVER happens. I skip it or turn the main TV off.

*Big* became a Broadway musical in 1996, with songs by David Shire and Richard Maltby, jr. That version adds surprising depth to the story. For example, in the scene where Josh seems to be about to have sex with Susan, Josh's child-self suddenly appears on stage and sings about what Josh is feeling inside. Unfortunately, there was no film or video of the production, but the Original Broadway Cast Recording is worth a listen.
