The 8th Commandment Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.....
For Lent one year I gave up gossiping....so much was revealed to me by our Lord. I wasn't prepared for all that I learned by giving up that one thing, and the major impact it had on multiple lives.
Matthew Kelly brings me back to that year. It is still a sin I struggle with even though I do not want to do it.
It is a valuable teaching and lesson Matthew shares with us this Advent Season.

Matthew, you speak so wisely - the Holy Spirit speaks thru you. I choose to think He is speaking to me, mostly because the subjects apply to me. And omgosh, I never thought exactly all it entails, what it does to us. Thank you so much

That is so true Judith that the Holy Spirit speaks through Mr. Kelly! Mr. Kelly has the gift of prophesy and predicted the corona virus in his book rediscover catholism. He didn't really I mean predict it or prophesise it, but what he wrote their merely as a story or as part of an example came true years later. He's a good author. I recommend your reading that story.anyway I believe the Holy Spirit prophesied through that story and guided Mr. Kelly to write that. Anyway, that's it , thanks for reading my comment.

Kelly makes.me feel pity on myself when i look back the past and see how sinful I have been. How silent life would have been if every word I altered was to paint the person i am talking about, his greatness, the words said in almost 100% of eulogies. How many families, keep on tearing one another apart, children to children and parents to children, and across each other. Good news expected in a phone call is more about talking bad on one another or wanting to hear gossip. Can resolve.e make a difference from this

Thank you Matthew. Your message here is why I have been gravitating toward a more isolated life, knowing that most of my relationships consist of gossip, especially in the realm of politics and other people's behaviors. It is unavoidable for me without increasing isolation, worship, dedication to prayer. Often times I try to say something positive or motivational and it somehow seems to offend. I most enjoy my time with God and that time is increasing in my life and my public presence is decreasing. God is the answer, not man.

Well said, I feel exactly the same way. It's so easy to be drawn into the "gossip mentality" when we are around others who are doing it. So, you are right. Better to disassociate from those people and spend time with God or just time enjoying the gifts God puts into our lives.

Thank you Matthew for this excellent exploration and illumination on this often glossed over form of bad behavior. However, I would add that what qualifies as gossip is not always clear. What would you say about the situation wherein I have been hurt by someone's bad behavior and need to talk about it to my friends? We've all been there. What about the situation where I feel obliged to warn someone away from someone else when I know that someone else is toxic in some way? What about my own need to clarify someone's behavior by talking about it to a friend? Is it me, or him? So, it seems that there are genuine human needs that can be viewed as gossip. It's always the gray zones that are difficult when speaking of personal moral discipline. Of course that's no excuse for our sloppiness in all those areas that are clearly trespasses, and these are where we should begin.

    • @MatthewKellyAuthor

    • @margaritakleinman5701

I was wondering these very same things. When exactly does talking about another person become "gossip"? Because people always talk about other people, but again, when would that talk be classified as "gossip"? As in your examples, if someone does or says something hurtful to me, and I mention this to someone else, is that gossip? Somehow I think that the definition of gossip includes some kind of malicious intent. But then again, as Matthew is saying, we may say something about someone, not even realizing the harm we may be causing that person. It really is something to think about, and I will definitely be reflecting more deeply about this.

Question: If names and associated information is "scrubbed" so the individual can't be identified, and we share a situation/event/action that is an important real life object lesson about the affects of a bad behavior, is that still gossip? For example something like "... this is something that happened to me. The person isn't important, but this is what happened that was very damaging and I'm sharing this with you so you know these things really can happen and I want you to learn from my experience..."
I am thinking of some the parables of Jesus where he shared the impact of bad decisions. The Prodigal Son, the worthless servant, etc. Or even when he told people "Do what the Pharisees say but do not follow what they do" and calling them "brood of vipers". So is pointing out evil to protect others still licit?

My daughter slandered my good name to my abusive family of origin at least 25 years ago. There have been so many awful ramifications from such ungrateful treatment. Naturally, they were so happy to hear some dirt on me that wasn't true, or rather they would not question, so amply rewarded her with part of my inheritance while showering her with pity and attention.
I can't state my case, my side of the story, to nieces and nephews I never knew since they already have prejudice sight unseen and block me from emails and FB pages.
It is difficult to impossible to undo such damage and bad feelings. People do not like to believe they were wrong even if they were lied to. I have been and continue to be, a convenient scapegoat.
Yet, I did tell the girl if she wanted any kind of reconciliation with me, she can do her part by telling them certain stories she told about were not true, or at least was leading them to believe by elaboration or omission. The truth does come out in the end but in this case, too many years have been spoiled irretrievably.

The difference between love of humans and love of God is that in human love, ecstasy comes at the beginning, but in the love of God it comes only at the end after one has passed through much suffering and agony of soul. The flesh first has its feast, and then the fast and sometimes the headache. The spirit has first the fast, and then the feast. The ecstatic pleasures of marriage are in the nature of a "bait," luring lovers to fulfill their mission, and they are also a Divine credit extended to those who later on will have the burden of rearing a family.
No great ecstasy of flesh or spirit is ever given for permanent possession without casting out something. There is a price tag on every ecstasy! The glory of an Easter Sunday cost a Good Friday. The privilege of the Immaculate Conception was an ecstasy given before the payment, but Mary had to pay for it at the foot of the Cross. Our Lord gave her "credit" but she later paid the debt.
