    Jim a lot of us don't mind the length and actually like it. There are a lot of "youtubers" that are more youtuber than mechanic. So we appreciate actual correct info. Just wanted to mention that for what it's worth.

    Jim, Got the same forks on my 4XV, for the last 10 years I have researched on and off why one fork doesn't click when you turn the damper, your explanation has allowed me to understand what could be going on and how to remedy it.
    Cheers buddy 👍 me love you long time....

    • @billinom8s
      @billinom8s 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I found on my 4xv that by winding the adjuster in too far and loosing the click it was only that the butt of the screw that notes the damper rod has been pushed part the call bearing. Winding back the adjuster alongside a little nudge from the underneath gets the screw back on the thread. The other way of setting the gap, like Jim said, is to measure the thread. On those R1s it's 11mm of thread to the top of the lock nut.

    It would have been easier to do the valve mods before painting, the bucket pins are pressed fit at the factory and they cannot be pulled out, you did good to drill free hand without marking the superb paint job, top tips once again, pity others don't show the important bits en-route, now anyone doing this job can rest easy seeing your content, top job.

    Very interesting as always Jim. I have worked on my VTR1000F and CBR600F4 forks and figured out that the right way to set the cap/damper rod length was to screw in the rebound adjuster flush with the cap, then thread the cap onto the rod until the needle just bottoms, then lock the cap to the rod. That allows the needle to be closed fully and leaves 3+ full turns to wind out. Kind of similar to the R1 but a different design.

    That was interesting. I had to replace the seals on one fork on my Tiger, simpler desing. Although I put tape over the top Al nut, I marked it with the socket I was using... a multipoint socket.... I think better to get a 6 point flat socket which acts on the flats.... also you can get them made from Al so would be of similar hardness and less likely to mar the surface.

    With my bike old yamaha TRX850 forks, I couldn't get damping to work at all; a harsh ride whether firm or soggy when I adjusted the damping. Fitted YSS damping valve and transformed the suspension. Removed the harshness and yet gave me tight damping. Difference between low speed and high speed damping I think.

  • @tonymosley8676
    @tonymosley8676 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    I was thinking that as soon as you'd removed the spring you could have turned it over to let the ball drop out of the way of the thread and then unscrewed the thingy it was locking in place, and once that was out of the way you could turn it back over and retreive the bearing from the main hole.. rather than drill a hole big enough for the bearing.

    Can I ask. Before u put in the grub screw. Do u need to put the spring and ball bearing back in. Or is it not needed.

    • @45Camster
      @45Camster 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The grub screw replaces the function of the ball bearing (detent).
      Though he did say others have just used silicone to fill the hole which would suggest there’s no need for an alternative to the removed ball bearing.
