    Hey great video, I want to ask about the distance range without an external mic, how do you think will it go with my recording in a lecture class with no external mic and how good would it be when I record it on my pocket or just put on the table with me sitting on yhe back or front?

    • @MalcolmWalker
      @MalcolmWalker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It works well in a table for yourself about 2-3 feet away. I am not sure if it would boost itself for a larger room but there is 4 settings you can use to change the range. It has auto, then low, medium, and high with pictures showing small crowd to large crowd. Not sure if it would hear everyone in a large room but as it gets quite it auto increases levels. I found this to be a problem recording for video but for just voice recording to save a lecture it shouldn’t be a problem. Pocket recording it should do fine picking up yourself but anyone around would be muffled.

    Something I noticed is that when I select the scene „Auto Voice Rec“ the mic sensitivity is way too high. It even picks up the air I breathe through my nose. I don‘t understand why, because in the manual, SONY says that this scene is optimized for recording voice notes.

    • @MalcolmWalker
      @MalcolmWalker  ปีที่แล้ว

      I found that the quality of recording was secondary to the units ability to just make sure you can hear and record what is being said. The priority is making sure voice is recorded and was a main reason i didn't use it very long.

    Is it possible to rename files on the fly, or manage files via folders?

    • @MalcolmWalker
      @MalcolmWalker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Here is everything I can do with folders.
      Create Folder> Built-In Memory or SD Card> Name Folder with preset names only from the following names, Conference, Meeting, Lecture, Class, Music, Singing, Interview, Language Lesson, Travel, Outdoors, Message, Schedule, Shopping List, To-Do, Voice Notes, FOLDER, RADIO. If multiple of one name is created it adds 01,02,03 etc. to the end of the name. It is possible to add the same name folder to the built in memory, or the SD Card, ex. Conference01 is in my SD Card and Built in Memory.
      So to answer your question, it looks like no, you can not rename the files on the fly, All you can do is add folders to either built in memory or SD Card. You can also select which folder you will be using to record into.
      I was able to change the folder name on the PC, I plugged the recorder into my windows laptop, opened the file explorer which is managed like any other device drive in windows, renamed the folder and then disconnected the recorder from the computer, The recorder then displayed the same folder with my new file name, which is a bit of a work around, but if you know ahead of time what you will be recording, you can at least create folders and rename them to use before you use it, then just select the folder you want to record into.
      Hope this helps.

    • @MalcolmWalker
      @MalcolmWalker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I did just find you can change the name of the file once it is recorded, but it is not custom, you have the following choices, Important, Take, Keep, X, XX, XXX, [1]-[5], and A-E. In the recordered file menu it also allows you to move the file to another folder.

    • @MalcolmWalker
      @MalcolmWalker  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My MacBook Pro vs air video (more recent) I used this set up. It works well with one problem that you have to plan ahead for. The recorder uses auto record levels and you can’t adjust it to one fixed level. It also has like a gain adjustment low, med, high, however it still
      Auto adjusts in those modes. The problem is if you start speaking after being quiet, it is very high and will clip the audio briefly before returning to a lower level. You can plan for that by speaking for a moment before you start speaking about what you want to actually record. But in that video you may hear the audio shift a bit at starting points while I speak. I did adjust the levels to try and normalize it in post but that is my main issue.

    Hi Malcolm do you recommend this voice recorder, instead of buying a wireless mic?

    • @MalcolmWalker
      @MalcolmWalker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. While it works well, the biggest issue I discovered with it, is it uses auto level control. If you stop speaking it bumps the mic gain way up and when you start speaking it gradually drops to a lower volume. I find this very frustrating because it clips your audio and then goes almost too quiet.
      I had high hopes to use it as a stand alone mic recorder but it fails to deliver for that use. It is still very well built and does have a lot to offer however. Just don’t buy it to use as a lav mic.
