    Beginner jump blues solo guitar lesson.
    Jump Blues is an up-tempo, jazz-tinged style of blues that first came to prominence in the mid- to late '40s. Usually featuring a vocalist in front of a large, horn-driven orchestra or medium sized combo with multiple horns, the style is earmarked by a driving rhythm, intensely shouted vocals, and honking tenor saxophone solos - all of those very elements a precursor to rock & roll. Jump blues was the bridge between the older styles of blues - primarily those in a small band context - and the big band jazz sound of the 1940s.
    Jump Blues was and is practiced by guitar giants such as Brian Setzer, T-Bone Walker, Charlie Christian, Gatemouth Brown and Freddie King.
    This 24-bar Jump Blues solo (really two distinct 12-bar solos) is a straightforward introduction to jump blues. It’s kept simple so that no tricky harmonized lines, diminished scales, double-stops or other “tricks” are present, and it’s slow enough to understand how the “play by the chord” style works to create and interesting solo for the listener.

    Exellent lesson, revealing your thinking! And, using triads on 4-3-2 for target chord tones simplifies learning and makes a lot of sense.

      Triads are a really simple way to make your soloing much more impactful. I don't know about you, but when I think "scales" I meander. When I think "Root, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, etc" I end up making much better statements.

    Yasss, beruhhh, other gee-tur guy here again. THAT is a groove, really in the pocket. You do a good job teaching the notes (you're channeling a bit of the real jumpers, I know T-Bone and Buddy Johnson are smiling), and I myself might have thrown in a diminished scale...BUT...quibble, quibble over rien, zéro, et nul, amiright? (guitarists, OMG, herding cats who ALWAYS have to be Kool Kats).
    BUT that swing time of yours means, well, quite a thing, so to speak: I'm not sure one can teach that. Literally, well played, VERY well played!

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Monty! I purposely left out many of the cool tricks like diminished runs or doublestop flurries so it's easier for someone trying to get into it. Jump is just the coolest thing!

      @@MarkZabel : Hey, you really NAILED it...AGAIN. Dig your range, and, really, it's the perfect lesson and framing of the T-Bone-esh thang. The part that seals it: your swing time ("It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing"). Plenty of guitarists get the notes, but few get the SWING, especially those who cut their teeth mainly on classic and eighties rock, without really exploring (or understanding) what and who inspired it. But you get it, got it, and give it: Good Rawkin' Tonite, with Swingtime to boot and reboot. Keep 'em comin'!

    What pickups are in your guitar and also what amp are you using here? Sounds so good man

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Those are Gibson Mini Humbuckers in the guitar. They're sweet for sure. A little lighter than full humbuckers and not as "midrangy". I'm using a BlackStar ID:Core on the "Clean" voicing. Great "bedroom" amp that'll run you $100 or so. I also have the tone knob rolled way down on this. The mini hums can sound much brighter if you want that as well. Thanks for watching!

    why is it called jump blues ??

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andrew Paton I think it's related to Billboard's review of Lionel Hampton's "Flying Home". They referred to it as "a jumper". Jump bands we're often used for up-tempo dance music instead of big bands, because they were cheaper. So I think so comes from up-tempo dancing.

      Hmm, that's great food for thought! I love this stuff. Just complex enough to keep me interested and not too jazzy to make my brain explode. Plus, it just has that 40s/50s cool going on.

    Please give us notation not tab

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most guitarists prefer tab. If you're a beginner you should try to use your ears more for this sort of music than tab or written notation. Listen to the video demo for the timing and phrasing.
