  • When his spacecraft passes through a vortex and he is forced to crash-land, astronaut (Glenn Corbett) is captured and led to believe he is on earth. After being harshly interrogated, he escapes and learns he is on Earth's twin planet, Terra. One family helps him find a way back home. This was a pilot for a new television series, but was never picked up by a network.

This film has a soothing warm colour palate. The orange, yellow-orange and yellowy shades in low contrast lighting remind us of evening sunsets that hypnotize us with calming emotions. The ambience is captured through shades of magic hour sunsets, minimalist interiors and costumes. The mood compliments the utopian calmness of a perfect society described in the film as the perfect order. It is like the calmness felt during the pandemic when society locked down from the usual hustle and bustle. As part of the sci-fi theme it keeps our focus on the sky. Sometimes we need to focus more on living in the present and slowing things down. This film expresses that mood.

I was 11 years old when this movie premiered. I was sent to stay at a familys home for the summer it was a really neat old farm house set way back off the main road near Polsbo, Washington and still sits there today I think. As a city boy from Seattle they were like the waltons to me complete with watering hole. I happened to stay up and watch this movie and I never forgot the ending where the man looks up into the night sky and see's 3 moons!! best part of the movie.

Love that Chrysler Newport. When I was a kid 8 years old we took a trip from Montreal to Vancouver it was 1969. We rented a 1969 Newport and drove around the west. It was a huge car long as hell bench seats you could sit 4 in the front and the hood was as wide as a Mini Cooper is long. I think it had a 440 engine. It was a beast probably got 10 miles to the gallon. Lol. Now we use litres so that would be about 15 kilometres to 3.75 litres

I watched this on TV when I was a boy. (Turning 57 in two days.) I remember being very frightened by the three moons because it was then that I really realized that he was far from home. Interesting that they keep saying "Earth" and "Terra"; in Spanish, "Earth" is known as "Tierra." Of course, this makes sense because "Terra" is Latin for "Earth." For some reason, this film remained in my head as a nostalgic favorite. I had no idea it was a pilot for a potential series. I don't struggle too much with the way they depicted life on Terra. Yes, the American culture stands out, as well as the very American English that is spoken on Terra; but I simply believe that Earth and Terra are practically mirror planets with very similar developments. It's not the best example of sci-fi, but it's fun in a very kitschy, retro way-and it reminds me of my childhood.

The first time I found this movie, it was on a $1 VHS tape in a dollar store. It was made on extremely cheap tape recorded at EP speed and the tracking wouldn't ever straighten up, but I finally got through it. Glad to see it was later released on those cheapo DVD movie compilations in digital format.

It was great to watch this movie after so many years. It would have been a great TV show, the plot was very promising. A sort of "fugitive" in another planet, truying to get back to Earth. I am a fan o Glenn Corbett, it is a pity that he died young.

This was amazingly high quality and considering it was from the early 70s very thought provoking. I bet that is why the US media execs refused to create a series based on this movie, heck probably why they never thought of doing one all these years later. How did this gem make it to the US small screen, it must have been luck or an accident.

TV pilot from Bing Crosby Prods, who are best known for CBS's "HOGAN'S HEROES"
and ABC's "BEN CASEY" TV series in the 60s. the Space Capsule used in this pilot,
was from "IN LIKE FLINT",and the "Journey With Fear" episode of "VOYAGE TO THE
BOTTOM OF THE SEA" at 20th Century Fox. in the 70s,a lot of made for TV stuff had
used lots of stock footage effects, since it was cheaper. Corbett's daughter is Laurie

This NBC-TV movie from early 1973 was intended as a series pilot that the network never picked up. the TV movie was by no means an original concept because it dabbles with the theory of two alternate earths, a concept that was explored in Universal Pictures and Century 21's "JOURNEY TO THE FAR SIDE OF THE SUN" (1969) so in the case of "THE STRANGER", this wasn't an original concept. but it had one great luxury- it was produced by Alan A Armer, who produced Quinn Martin's "THE INVADERS" (1967-68) and "THE UNTOUCHABLES" (1959) and also produced by Bing Crosby Productions, the company responsible for "BEN CASEY" (1961-66) and "HOGAN'S HEROES" (1965-71) and the Cinerama Motion picture release, "WILLARD" (1971) and "BEN" (1972) Glenn Corbett, who co-starred on CBS's old "ROUTE 66" series, plays the title role in this TV movie as an Earth astronaut who crashes on a planet that he thinks is Earth, but is its twin, Terra, and hunted down by a police state of an Orwellian society-and since Alan A Armer also worked on QM's "THE FUGITIVE", this at least gave this pilot a familiar pattern, but the executives at NBC didn't seem very interested, but this was the same TV network that canceled "STAR TREK" in 1969 and look what happened after that mistake! the space capsule footage used on this TV pilot was originally used by Twentieth Century Fox's "IN LIKE FLINT" (1967) and was also used in the "Journey With Fear" episode of "VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA" that same year, and by a remarkable coincidence, some of the computer footage used in this 1973 TV movie also came from The Seaview's Armac computer system-stock footage was heavily used on TV back in those days as it was cheaper for the budgets

Yep, I remember seeing this on 70s-era TV, also; made back in the day when a "Movie for Television" was actually an event. The thing that I remember most about this one was the trick ending, when Corbett's character looks up into the sky and sees three moons. The Twilight Zone was also famous for those kinds of "trick endings."

I remember seeing this on NBC's Movie of the Week back in 1973. It was the pilot for a series that never got picked up, a mashup of "1984", "The Fugitive" and Gerry Anderson's "Doppelganger". Interesting idea for a show, though I can see now why the network passed on it -- it would be Stryker making new friends and sowing seeds of discontent against the Perfect Order every week, the guy in the turtleneck ineffectually chasing him every week, and every week he'd almost find a way home but never quite make it. Would have gotten stale pretty fast. But they did okay with it on what was clearly a low budget.

Yep. It was going to be a re-make of "The Fugitive" dressed with an undercurrent of Soviet Union activity. "Perfect Order", one-world government, "Ward E" = Siberian prison camp and readjustment facilities. An aside: the security or lack thereof of a private individual entering pre-launch was unrealistic even for the '70s. All said, I actually like this flick, and watch it to kill 90 minutes a few times a year.

A duplicate Earth on the other side of the sun must have been trending during this time period. The big budget British movie JOURNEY TO THE FAR SIDE OF THE SON made in 1969 which I enjoyed had the astronaut crashing on a mirrored earth on the exact opposite side of the sun. Everything was a duplicated but in reverse...i.e. he can read the blackboard behind him in a mirror (located in his hospital recovery room), ppl drive on the wrong side of the road, his body organs that should be on his right side are on his left side, etc etc. Preposterous yes.
Now, we'd just have our protagonist finding himself in another multiverse where there is an Earth but the history has a major difference. I think THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE would be an example of that.

+Arthur O'Duffy I just looked this word up, on Wikipedia, and you're right! It is the latin word for Earth. Wonder if the writers, of this movie knew this?

as others have suggested, a weekly series would have been too similar to "The Fugitive"

This was one I hadn’t seen before. He could of at least got back to earth! I wonder if this was going to be a series back then but never made it. They left it open for that possibility.

The actress in the car with Glenn corbett was on StarTrek. It was the episode about an overcrowded planet who needed a disease and she caught it from James t Kirk. anyone remember that one?

    • @Neville60001

The actress in question is Sharon Acker, and the episode of _Star Trek_ she was on is *The Mark Of Gideon* .

So Neil got trapped in the Perfect Order forever now. It's a VERY GOOD old movie, but the ending shouldn't have been like this. Bad luck Neil Stricker. The only good thing for him is, atleast the inhabitants of this planet are 100% similar to the human beings of Earth. The planet is like Earth but not Earth.

  • @johnellizz
    @johnellizz 10 ปีที่แล้ว +13

This thin movie vaguely imitates the excellent Gerry Anderson film "Journey To The Far Side Of The Sun". Watch that movie to see a more in-depth version of the concept of a parallel Earth that exactly mirrors our own crappy planet.

The new Blu Ray is excellent - colour a lot better. I always took the duplicate Earth as being created by quantum entanglement between atoms so that when an event happens on Earth One - it's exactly replicated on Earth 2

And who better, then Alan A Armer, who produced this TV movie, since he's had expirience
with men on the run, like "Richard Kimble" from "THE FUGITIVE",or his space-age
counterpart "David Vincent",from "THE INVADERS" NBC could've had great success, had they followed through with this TV pilot!

One other detail i left out,is some of the electronic equipment used in this TV movie
was also used in NBC's "SEARCH" TV series, which was still running durring this same
TV season. Corbett's daughter Laurie Holden is best known for her work on AMC's
    "THE WALKING DEAD" TV series
