Not a ton of lore, but in the original ror1 mod there's a new final boss called the Edict, who is a sort of ruler of the void I think, and the nemeses are "created" by them. (The mod's version of the void is a bit different from the canon one since it was made before sotv came out and gave more concrete answers about it) Someone actually asked nk (the mod's lead dev) about the origins/kit design of the nemeses recently and they responded with this: "Design: as digi shares, most times the goal is to flip the kit in a particular way: sniper flips it by thinking about the charge inversely, wanting the player to move and shoot a lot before being able to use the big snipe shot VS the original that needs to stand still and charge up but can do it anytime NemChef thinks about all skills empowering one VS one skill empowering all NemHand thinks about rapid damage vs the slow and steady aoe hits of the hammer Visually they do tend to have a darker but more "neon" appearance, there's no huge reasoning to this other than it being like what shadow is to sonic haha The lore aspect is more complicated as it only exists in paper but isnt explicitly mentioned anywhere but by mere hints The vague idea is that they were survivors like you, but on the verge of their inevitable death, the Edict and its influence gave them a choice: to give something up and live, or to perish and be forgotten like everyone else Unknowingly, what they give up makes them lose their humanity, all while keeping your same desperation to get out, like a mirror image of what you've become" Personally I think starstorm and other mods totally make ror1 worth it even if you have returns, ss alone practically doubles the game's content lol and was good enough for nk to be hired to work on returns. Maybe consider trying it out!
@@skiburc2252 yeah! You can find them in the credits as "Neik Cervantes Martinez: additional programming, animation, and design"! They also had another modder Dee working on art and designing all four new survivors, and they hired Saturnyoshi, the creator of the modloader, as a permanent member of Hopoo! Another fun fact while I'm at it, nemesis commando was almost added into the game as one last survivor, but was sadly cut because of time restraints. Dee shared a clip of him and he was almost fully functional except for the special! I wonder if the ss returns team will be directly given that art and code?
@@abra_escaped Edict is a ROR1 Aurelionite Voidling mix in a way, a Void-based construct that isn't as curious about the survivors as Voidling shows. I feel Arraign is the true end boss in Starstorm.
WE LOVE WHISTLING BASINNNN
