  • Trying out the Wolf River Coils TIA antenna setup in my back yard. A little unboxing, a little reviewing, a little too much coffee.

My first contact with a platinum at a 5300 foot high POTA site was Italy, second was Chile from NC on 20 meters.
The are very reasonably priced and easy to tune.

I just bought my SB1000 TIA with the center loading extensions. I'm hoping to have it ready for Texas QSO Party this weekend. Thanks for sharing. 73 DE KF5RHI!

@@w8natshenanigans705 I made powerpole pigtails for my radials and doubled the number of them. It's replaced my BuddiPole as my go-to antenna for operating in the wild. Thanks for doing the video.

@@RESlusher That's great! The rings that come with the radials are not the most durable things. Was thinking of banana plugs but powerpole connectrors is a great idea!

@@w8natshenanigans705 Banana plugs would work too I suppose. PowerPoles are just what I had on-hand. You could even go with three wires per leg; but I'm not sure how much improvement you'd see. Law of Diminishing Returns and all.

Thanks for the video, I just got the mini TIA. Was it easy adjusting the coil for the bands? Trial and error?…. Thanks

In my case, trial & error and then marking the coil with a sharpie so I could find the general areas again. :)

how did you do on field day with the antenna

This was recorded in 2019, and I wound up working longer than expected that weekend and only made a few contacts. But it worked, I was just late to the game. This year I was a 1D, and used an end fed. That said, I will say from just using it for fun for some time that its best performance is on 20 meter. It's ok on 30 and 40, and while it can tune 80, it is really not great down there.

? Do you happen to know what gauge wire the radial’s area?

The kit I originally got came with 18 guage radials, and when I killed those and bought a replacement set later, those were also 18 guage. While nothing on their site says they are a specific guage, that could have changed, by now. But I am going to guess that is still what they are sending.
