  • Wildlife and bird photography has me thinking a lot. Here is a quick thought video that asks for your personal answer to a simple question.
Watch the video and I share images I have taken over the past 3 months, you tell me if I succeeded in my 'intent" and in the comments pick your favorite.

My wildlife photography intent is to share with others what they may not be able to see in their regular everyday life, and to bring happiness to all. I always want to produce photos with clarity, sharpness, beautiful color and for my subject to be in a unique pose or action.

“Evocative”.. evoke positive emotion, action to get outdoors and/or awareness. Thanks for making me ponder this. 😊

    My intent: enjoyment
    Loved the Belted Kingfisher.
My personal preference is not a lot of darkness in a photo. A lot of professionals photos have to much darkness.
Yes you met your pretty intent.

This is a superb topic. My intent, first and foremost, is to produce images and video that motivate more folks to become advocates for wildlife and for nature. To protect what we have left, we need many more people involved. Our images have the potential to pique people's curiosity and we tend to care much more about the things we know about.

The intent of my wildlife photography is to show people the beauty of nature. I think you absolutely captured your intent with these photos. My favorite is the Hooded Merganser. It's not only an amazing photo, the duck looks very fancy as well.

My intent has morphed over the last year. It used to be really just to get the bird and showcase it.. never really putting much thought into the rest of the photo. Lately it’s more to capture not just the bird but the environment and/or color. I’m a lot more specific about when and where I take photos now instead of just mindlessly clicking away. At least that’s my intent. Sometimes the day doesn’t work out and I just get what I can get and work with it. 😅

The goal of my wildlife photography is to produce images that allow the viewer to see the details of an animal that often go unnoticed. E.g., I recently took a photograph of a White-breasted Nuthatch. What was special about this is that the bird was standing on a flat rock. This allowed us to see the bird's talons, which were remarkably large for its size.
Yes, you succeeded! My favorite of your recent photos was the American Wigeon.
    Really enjoying your channel. Thanks!

The word that springs to mind is 'serene'. The last shot of your video of the male and female mergansers doesn't fit that bill, but I think it's just fantastic!
It may be lucky, but the better you are - the luckier you get.

The goal of my wildlife photography is to produce cool (to me) images that are a record of my encountering wild animals.
I think the first image was the prettiest because of the background colors and how they match the very cute duck.
My favorite is the kingfisher because I think kingfishers are cool and I like more cooler, more muted colors like blue and gray. Normally wouldn’t be a fan of the (basically) solid gold background, but I think it really works as contrast for the bird and rock.

I’ve been a wildlife and landscape photographer for a very long time. Long before it was cool. My intent is the peace. That’s all…just the peace of being in a beautiful place with beautiful light seeing anything that’s beautiful or interesting. I used to sell quite a bit of my images. I took that option away on my website because the selling side of it isn’t peaceful. Now my website is a gallery of beautiful places and things I’ve had the privilege to see in my life and it’s what my kids will look at and love long after I’ve been scattered to become part of these mountains of East Tennessee where I’ve been lucky enough to have been born, raised, and lived my life. From breathtaking sunrises alone on a mountain or with someone I love, to dragonflies and butterflies and warblers. I love it all. I’m in it for the peace.

...to create an image that is beautiful! Beautiful in the sense of producing an image that shows how unique each bird is when you take a minute and really focus on that bird. Light, background, and composition all play a role in showcasing the bird, but my hope is that people see my images and "walk away" thinking "I was unaware of how beautiful that bird was!".
And the Wigeon is my favorite of yours so far this year. It's an amazing photo and "pretty" photo.

Female Common Merganzer in the mist. You've captured her engaged which adds life to the capture and not just a lifeless portrait or clinical image. The soft drop-off brings it in. Well captured Scott and a 'pretty' image. Your songbird images are 'pretty' and many are magical. My intent is to create 'Magical' scenes whether it be Mushrooms, flowers, or insects.

Your question brought to mind a quote from the photographer Harold Feinstein. When a student asked how do you know when to click the shutter he responded "When your jaw drops". This was reiterated by two other commenters here. When I am photographing I enjoy letting curious passersyby look through my viewfinder. They are often wowed by seeing something they would otherwise never noticed to enjoy. You succesfull in making pretty images. But my favorite was the first image from the your video on "Is it wildlife".

    Intent: Pleasing to myself.
    Yes you succeeded. Absolutely.
Favorite image in the male Goldeneye flapping his wings. Images are outstanding. My preference, and not at all being critical of your work, would be instead of the ducks coming from left to right, would be for them to come toward you from something like a 60 degree angle, so its wake would not go off the left side of the photo. To me, and I am probably wrong, that would give a more balanced look. But that also may be nearly impossible. Again, I am not finding fault. I have nothing that would come close to any of these images. That leads me to another point…flow is always (maybe nearly always) from the left to right when viewing photos. I think everyone does that and certainly not seem right if flow was from right to left. I would not hesitate to flip in order to change the flow fro left to right? Has this come up on your channel?

For me the wish is to make images, which make people look twice, and through this engage them into nature. For sure I'm not always having my goal in mind. A good reminder! The hazy Common Merganser is the one I like most. In general your definition of pretty seems to have to do with clean and modest colored backgrounds. For me pretty also would be related to light and surrounding / setting.

The goal of my wildlife/nature photography is to produce images that are EVOCATIVE. I didn't read through the comments, so I don't know whether others have written the same. When I write evocative, I mean giving the sense of place and time so that the viewer feels like they "get it". They can savor the moment that I captured. They get a special feeling for the scene before them. It may not be the same feeling as mine, but they feel something and understand something about the image and themselves.
As for your images, Scott, I'll say yes...they are pretty. But to be honest, I think they are more than that...they succeed on more levels than just "pretty". And my favorite image is the American Wigeon. As an aside, I'm not a big fan of mergansers as they eat the trout I like to fish for!!!

When I go out with my camera my intent is to capture beautiful images that showcase the bird or animal in its environment. All of your examples were pretty, so goal accomplished. • @karlgunterwunsch1950

The goal of my photography is to capture a moment - something that makes this stand out from just being pretty and make them stand out - in sports photography this would be the moment where the running back catches the ball in the end zone to win the Super Bowl as compared to the photo of the quarter back standing behind the line and waiting for the ball to come into play, one happens umpteenth times during a game, the other once in a year and is therefore more memorable (to the sports photographer).
I think currently the acronym in bird photography that is linked with the "bird is pretty" photography is BOAS (bird on a stick), as extension here could be called BOWS (bird on water swimming). You have some pretty images in your shown gallery, so you achieved your goal. For me though I am somehow missing an element to make any one of these stand out and make it memorable, writing this I already couldn't tell which birds I have seen. BOWS happens a billion times a day, on a good day you will be able to tick off a whole list of species, all in good light, all well framed, all looking pretty. Memorable for example is the sun bird taking a bath in a flower which captured some water during the nights rain (I think I have seen them from another photographer a year back and I as a viewer am still remembering seeing these outstanding photos today)...
For me though, and I don't want to diminish the enjoyment this brings, I'll take pretty all day long in my (macro) photography - to keep me going while searching for a moment, something memorable. In the absence of something in that (more elusive) category I may even remember some specially pretty photos well into the next year or longer (the columbine flower with two bee flies sitting on it I think I have shown you when you doubted my credibility as a macro photographer). But the photos where two assassin bugs have bitten into the same caterpillar, one at the front, one at the end and now are squabbling by tucking on it back and forth, or the one where two sand bees have emerged from a ladyslipper orchid and now are cleaning themselves on the edge of the flower, or the longhorn bee emerging from a serapia ground orchid after a good nights (and early morning to midday) sleep, they for me qualify as moments because to these I have formed a memory to be the witness of and be able to photograph them. If I (as an amateur, I still have to work full time) get one such memorable image a year I am happy.

@Kyle Jones almost took the words out of my mouth "I'm usually most excited when my photograph tells a good story, either behavioral or humorous." I am limited by equipment to do much bird photography since my lens with the most reach is a Nikon 300 PF, We have Scrub Jays here who will interact with other wildlife at times and they have helped me capture some moments that give me delight. Small birds are more difficult and I usually wind up needing to crop more than I like. Some years the great horned owls choose to bring their young to summer here and the youngsters tend to come fairly close which makes for some nice opportunities. I mainly photograph larger wildlife, mostly coyotes and bobcats and at times big horn sheep. Due to my age and responsibilities at home these days I am pretty much limited to staying on our property to photograph. We are located in a wildlife corridor which makes being able to photograph nature without leaving home a bit easier.
Yes, to me your photos have succeeded in your intent. I enjoy your bird photos a great deal. I think my favorite is the Common Merganser in the haze but then I really like the "moment" of the Kingfisher photo and think the color contrast is wonderful. Thanks, this was an interesting topic to explore.

First word that came to my mind is 'different' I want to capture images that are different. My gallery isn't that unique, but after a photoshoot I won't select any images that look similar to others I have seen from other people.

The goal of my wildlife photography is to create (if possible) beautiful images of birds. I am still very new at understanding composition (I am mostly a birdwatcher and still at the record or documentary stage). You most definitely create pretty images. In my opinion, the last vertical image of the male Hooded Merganser is your best image. I also liked the saturated light of the vertical image of the Ruddy Duck.

  • @mariemattsson824

The goal of my wildlife photography is to produce images that are making me feel good inside. Honestly, that's it. The goal of SHOWING my images is to make people curious about Nordic nature, and make more people care. But after many years I've realised that it's mostly preaching for the choir. 95% of the people who follow me on social media or come to my lectures are other nature photographers... Hopefully I reach out to someone else, but nowadays I more or less see that as a bonus.
So (sadly?) it really is about me, and my moments in nature. Wildlife photography makes me keep my head above the water mentally.

My intent came from a well known modern artist in NYC decades ago. I strive to create an emotion in the mind of the viewer.
I accept your challenge asking for a critique of your shots. You choose a background that expresses the same style in every shot. Nothing tells much about the environment of the bird. Looking at the body of your work, not at single image, there becomes a degree of repetitive redundancy . I've learned birders concentrate on just the bird, but in a wider exhibition of images of all types, the general viewer and collectors are more attuned to spend time at images that create a story in their mind. This is where the fine line between a technically well done photo crosses over into being considered fine art. A quick look at the art works chosen by the Judges for the Annual Federal Duck Stamp will give you an idea of what I'm alluding to.

    • @WildlifeInspired

Consider what I showed was a specific time period at the same location. So yes they will all look similar. I shoot 50-100 species a year with a variety of looks. I'd be surprised if anyone looked at by "body of work" and said it all looked similar. But god bless it that's your opinion. Feel free to send me a link to your work for comparison.

Thanks for the video, Scott. You ask a good question... one that isn't necessarily exclusive to one answer. However, because you asked I'll share my primary intent - which is to provide enjoyment to myself and other viewers. I've had numerous people reach out to me on social media and my website sharing for various reasons why they are unable to go out and enjoy nature themselves, how they live vicariously through my images. And, that makes it all worth while.
Yes, I think you validated your intent. And, I love the mergansers. I mostly glass songbirds in my backyard or afield and don't see many waterfowl. But there is hope!

what are your thoughts regarding photoblinds? I'd like to use for quick get in/get out and unable to put in place days in advance. Would they be a waste of $$?
As far as the question...I want photos that give me warm and fuzzies...I'm very critical of my work so if I succeed at pleasing myself, others will be going "wow!". Just seriously beginning so I have a long ways to go..hopefully I meet with success before I leave this world (I'm 69).
As far as photo, American Wigeon

Blinds, YES. I would look at my patreon site. I have done reviews and have links to the ones I use. Since that is subscriber content, I don't give that out on TH-cam.

When I am using a canon lens at f/8 or f/11, doe it make any difference whether I have a zoom lens with f/2.8 or f/ 4.5 - 5.6?

Not really but you will need a ton of light to work at those apertures, or flashes and you won't get the same bokeh.
