Awesome! I flew on one of these Russian M1-17 helecopters in 1995 from Lukla to Kathamndu. At the tiny airport we were all patted down & our lighters & matches were confiscated, & when I boarded the chopper I realised why. The stench of aircraft fuel was so over powering I almost gagged. Us trekkers we seated on benches oppersite each other & we were all given ear protective headphones. I admit I was terrified as we took off but I shoulden't have been. The short ride back to Kathmandu went without a hitch! I adore Nepal & hope to return soon.
Soviet Era saves EuroCopter. It's not just with helicopters. Anything that's old and analog, will survive. Anything that requires sensors, it just means there's 1000 ways to break it.
Mi-8 (B-8, article No. 80, on the codification of NATO: Hip - "Hip") - Soviet / Russian multipurpose helicopter, developed by the Design Bureau named after ML Mil in the early 1960s. It is the most massive twin-engine helicopter in the world (more than 12,000 units have been built), and is on the list of the most massive helicopters in the history of aviation. It is widely used in many countries of the world to perform many civil and military tasks. Helicopters MI-8, as a rule, have a dual purpose, as indicated in the type certificate. In Russia, military helicopters can only be sold by Rosoboronexport, a joint venture of the Rostekh corporation. All other helicopters that are in free sale have only a civilian purpose.

My dad slinged Mi-17(after deassembled it as much as possible) from MI-17 at 3300 meters in 1999. It was a daring operation.
