Great review Jack. I picked up a GTX100 a few weeks ago and love it. I have a few tube amps including an SS22 and Super Champ XD and really like how the GTX100 is lighter than even the Super Champ. I'm in a cover band and this new GTX100 makes my life so much easier, no tweaking knobs between tunes to get the sound I need. I simply use my iPhone to choose presets as we go thru our bands setlist. Lightweight, convenient, no-brainer, sounds fantastic, what else could one ask for? Well done Fender!!!
Hey, how are you liking the GTX100 2yrs+ later? I have been using a Super Champ XD exclusively for the past 10yrs+, mostly channel 1 with pedals, esp for metal, but sometimes the channel 2 stuff for the twangy blackface models or the classic rock tones, and have been eyeing something like a GTX100 or a modelling pedal to put in front of the Super Champ. Also been eyeing a Mesa Mark Five 25, but that's way more expensive and overkill for playing at home, so maybe the dual rec and mark iic models on the mustang would suffice that particular itch, but interested in the other Fender amp modelling as well. Mostly would just be playing at home, so would be low volume playing, for example I keep my Super Champ XD between 2-3 on volume so my wife/kids don't complain upstairs. You still happy with the purchase? Think the Super Champ XD is better to just stick with for only playing at home or you find yourself playing on the GTX100 more (assuming you still have both)? I've seen some used ones pop up that I'd try to negotiate down to as close to $300 as possible. Thanks!
@@FireMrshlBill I've sold both the GTX100 and Super Champ XD for the new Boss GX-100 effects processor and a Fender 68 Pro Reverb. Volume is controlled using a Roland EV-5 Expression Pedal plugged into the GX-100 because I'm bypassing the tone stack and effects on the Deluxe 900 DSP.

Well thank you!! Hi Jack. Like the review a lot. I am about to take delivery of my GTX 100 and am VERY excited. Your explanation of the model vs modelled was very helpful and easy to imagine/understand. It's people like you and others on TH-cam that I am so, so, grateful - grateful for giving so much knowledge (by way of internet videos). This would be almost impossible for me to attain by tweaking blindly in 'real time'. I am in my 50's and still pinch myself about the technology that helps me expand my music. Life for me is better when we can play music. Thanks again. I'm SUBSCRIBED :) ps...I know I'm not old....but I am a pre-technology muso.
Thank you for the kind words, glad the video was helpful! Alot of the digital modeling world which has made a big comeback lately is pretty new to me also. I'm traditional more of a simple amp and pedal player. But I really wish they had stuff this good when I was starting out. Thanks for such a detailed review. I’ve been thinking of getting one of these. I don’t gig, so it’s just me in my living room. This would be a huge upgrade over my Champion 20
This is a really great review. I think this does the best job of describing this amplifier than any that I've seen. I'm still mulling over what to get for my next amp, and if I get this, will probably use it mainly for a twin sound. There is a Vox AC30 down the road, but its weight reminds em of the main drawback of good tubeamps. Also, great playing. Seen quite few of your videos!
Heading to my local GC to pick one up tomorrow😁 I've been trying out the new Catalyst 60 for a week and while it sounds very nice, the Android app constantly crashes on my Samsung tablet and am blown away by this vid! The Fender Android app gets great reviews and you sold me! Plus the 7 button foot switch is far more functional...
Just got the GTX 100 and it does all that I want it to do. I had a Fender 85 amp that was very loud (65 watts rms) and I gave that and some of my old guitars away to a plumber who worked on my house. He really likes guitar and appreciated and I would rather have that than money. So, I got this amp because I wanted consolidation. Everything all in one and the foot pedal. And amen to using the amp. I can muddle through dials but look at the graphics is easier. There are two sounds I look for in an amp and effects package. First, is distorted sound that I get from Ted Nugent's Byrdland ES-335 guitar that he used for "Cat Scratch Fever" era. And the other is a clean and jangly tone with a slight crisp that I hear from Steve Vai on "Drop in the Bucket" on the album Lil Ain't Enuff by the DLR Band (David Lee Roth.) Something about the second half of that song that is just so right with what Steve Vai is doing. But I also like a clean country sound for some chicken pickin'. This is a great amp for the price and it will do whatever you want. Great for recording. Microphones do not care. People would be suprised at how many iconic guitar sections were recorded on a solid state 10 or 30 watt amp with a Shure SM-57 microphone and it's mid-range honkiness.
Thanks for the video Jack. I enjoyed it. I have owned a couple of Mustang's in the past. A mk lV original version, and a mustang lll v2 which was a really good amp. When they came out, they were so far ahead of any other modelling amps at the time lMO. I've just ordered a GTX100, and I'm really looking forward to it. Keep the great videos coming. Excellent review, i appreciate all your explanation. Totally value! to hear the sound there are a lot of reviews. But your expert talking is the goal. I ll get one of those definitely. Thanks!
You did a good job explaining the amp in the room feel. These types of modelling amps feel like a real amp, in a booth, miced, and then played over studio monitors. It’s like the difference between being in the room with a singer and a real piano and a record Ming of same. That piano and the singer’s vocal cords go right to your ears. Listening to it miced and played back over speakers is just totally different than being in the room with the singer. So it is with amps. If you buy an amp like this an expect to get the amp in the room experience, you WILL be disappointed. I believe this is one of the reasons the katana is so popular. It IS an amp in its own right and it feels like it in the room. It is the singer in the room.
Nice video and great explanations! I'm considering getting the GTX100 as a practice amp. I've never played any of the "real" versions of the amps that the GTX models. If I bought the GTX100, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference in feel, since I've never used those other amps. However, some of these modeling amps don't "feel" like a "real" guitar amp. They lack the immediacy of a real combo amp. I think the Katana is one of the few that actually pulls of that amp-in-the-room feel and sound. So, that's a long-winded way of asking: Does the GTX100 feel like a real amp? Does it have that amp-in-the-room feel to it?
With this footswitch you don´t need any other pedal, I have ampero II after take this AMPS, I saw that Fender Mustang has everthing that I need, I only use Overdrive/Distortion, Delay/Reverb, for me is enought to run with the many AMP simulator in this amp!!!!

However I am on a budget and this amp has some cool features so it might be over kill for my purpose of wanting to use my multi-effect unit., Is there a combo amp with effects loop that might suit me better that you could recommend? I don’t need a a whole lot of bells and whistles just an effects loop in and out I’m guessing? Thank you Craig
Good review. I have a GTX100 and would love to tweak in a great clean Twin Reverb sound on the verge of breakup out of the number 1 preset. It sounds good out of the box, but if you've got any tips for my Fender Strat on the preset, it would be great. Thanks.
How do you think the chorus pedal presets sound? I’m in an indie rock band so I rely a lot on my chorus pedal, but I’m hoping the mustang and it’s footswitch can replace my current board
I’d like to hear a professional opinion. Which amp would you recommend for Neo-soul, R&B, and Lofi music? I’ve previously used a Roland Micro Cube GX, but I’m now looking for something with better sound quality. I’m currently considering the Boss Katana-50 MkIII or the Fender Mustang GTX100, but I’m open to other suggestions if these options aren’t the best fit for my needs.
Good demo of the amp. I'm definitely a Fender fan, but I have to say - for the same money, I think the BOSS Katana Artist is the better sounding amp. This amp has more bells and whistles, but the Katana Artist sounds better.
Hi, love your videos for years. It are completely different amps but how would you compare the sound quality with the tonemaster amps ? I only play blues at home ( think bb king , Joe Bona massa , Peter green etc ) I am torn between these two amps. The gtx can play my backing tracks ( boss eband ) and has a headphone. I like all the fender amps but a tonemaster just is one amp but at its best. If you had to choose which one would you prefer ?
The Tonemasters are going to generally sound "better" and more authentic, but much more limited. This amp gives a nice array of pretty good tones. I'd probably roll with a Tone Master, but thats also because the classic Fender tones are what Im most likely to use on the GTX anyway.
Hello, I recently purchased this amp for my first electric guitar but I'm wondering if my amp is faulty. Since my amplifier makes buzzing static noises on several preset effects. Have you experienced that? An answer would be appreciated
Hi Jack, great review. Quick silly question if I may... I have quite an extensive pedal board which has taken years to pay for and build and I dont want to make it redundant. I'm interested in this amp purely for all of the amp models and then using my board for the drives and effects. I cant find any reviews about how well this amp does or doesn't take drive pedals through the various amp models. I was just wondering if you have tried it and can comment on how well it performed. I'm torn between this and the fender blues jnr. Cheers.
So I'm sure it would work well with most non-drive effects, its even clearly designed for it with the stereo FX loop. Drives I haven't had the chance to test out -- that would be the bigger question for me. Overall I think this is a superior amp to the Blues Jr in many ways, however, if you're looking at using the pedalboard that could obviously change things.
From all of the research I’ve don’t only one video mentioned the GTX’s ability to take pedals and apparently it was inferior to that of the Katana. I am torn between the two and can’t make up my own mind. I bought the Katana and I think it sounds wonderful, I also love the power output switch. This allows you to switch between 100w,50w, and .5w output. Great for playing indoors without full power. I have not used it’s software for modeling bc i need to connect it to a computer which I am not a fan of. My computer sucks lol My Guitar Center had them in stock so I went with Katana first and have 45 days to try it out. I plan on trying both
Do you think this amp would work well with Universal Audio amp in a box pedals like the Dream 65? Is the amp’s speaker “neutral” enough to work well with the UA speaker/cabinet emulations offered in those pedals? Thanks!
Which is better, Fender GT200 or Fender Mustang GTX100? I am confused with these two Amps.I dont want a mistake and to regret after I use it.Thanks for your advise I will appreciate much.
@jack fossett how is this at low volumes? I just play at home. Would the volume set at 2 on the GTX be louder than the volume set at 2 on a Champion 20? I hope my question makes sense.
Comparatively to the 20 I’m not sure - this one has so many ways to dial in, it’s hard to directly compare. I do think that it sounds pretty good at low volumes though
Your playing is really good but the sounds coming from the amp seem somewhat live less so to speak. Just lacks kind of that airy push which some have called '3D' vs '2D'. Would have been good to compare at least one real amp such as the twin reverb vs the GTX modeling version to get some kind of relativity. Have heard a number of demos of the previous mustang gt100 vs various real tube amps and they are just really different. Not sure the GTX version is that much closer. However the GTX certainly has some positives going for it. Just wondering if you can do a comparative video between the GTX and something like the real twin etc.
Hello, I brought this amp for my first guitar but I'm not sure if it's faulty since it kinda buzzes on several preset effects when my guitar isn't plugged in. Is this something normal to experience? An answer would be appreciated
Hi Jack, I'm seriously considering the GTX100 after having just tried the 50 watt version. My question is regarding a boost function. I will need a volume boost when doing solos in a live situation and didn't see that function on the footswitch (the Katana has one). Is there a simple way to assign one of the switches for a solo boost, or would it be better to add a clean boost pedal into the amp? I had a different solid state amp in the past and that one didn't seem to like boost pedal on anything other than a clean setting. Thanks
How long will fender support the software or will they abandon it like they did the original mustang amp ( love my fenders but mad at them for that ) the little mustang practice amp I bought brand new had no support leaving guitar center , as cool as it is , this sucks and truthfully interested in the gtx 100 definitely gun shy after feeling screwed over like that ( found out it was Microsoft that screwed us over reason for loss of fender support ) 😢 ) I'm definitely getting the GTX 100 😊 I'm definitely a fan i have 2 fender stratocaster 2 fender acoustic a fender banjo and a jackson king v made by fender, a fender frontman and a small mustang 1.v2 can't wait to get my grubby little hands on the GTX mu ha ha mu ha ha 😆 😄 🤣 😂🤣😂🤣😂😁
Is it worth upgrading from the stereo Mustang V v2 to this thing ? I see that bluetooth is a great tool but my M-5 just seems to do it all too. I'm torn....I still use pedels on any amp. Thnx....
Thats hard to say - I haven't played them back to back so I'm not really sure how the amp models would stack up against each other. The bluetooth thing is cool, but I do alot of times just prefer being able to dial it in more "organically" so to speak.
You can use one or the other, or both. On my gtx50 I can see the onboard display change with my phone/app settings, and vice versa if I adjust on my amp I see the changes in my phone. What are you trying to get it to do
Jack Fossett can you please tell me your honest opinion about the dirty sounds of the amp? I’m looking for a amp to plug and play in my bedroom and to do some small rigs. Are the dirty sounds as good as a boss katana 100??
@@marioduarte3656 Personally I think this amp beats the Katana. I've gigged with this amp all summer and it hasn't disappointed. You just have to be willing to take time dialing it in right - not all models and settings sound good, but with some tweaking, it can really sound great.
Thanks, this was really helpful. I'm looking for primarily a practice amp that I can gig with on occasion. How does it sound at apartment/bedroom volumes?
Your video was brilliant, thanks for taking the time to make it, but to no fault of yours I too have just bought this amp and I am so disappointed with it. It's probably the weakest and thinnest sounding amp I've ever heard. You seem to spend at least two days trying to get an half decent and acceptable sound, of which you'll never really be happy with. I unfortunately put it back up for sale. Definitely not worth the money. And frankly quite embarrassing for fender.
Oh thats interesting, I didn't have that experience. I thought there was a slight learning curve but I found it relatively easy to get a good tone out of. Sorry you had a bad experience with it -

Impressive! Great review. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Good demo of the amp. I'm definitely a Fender fan, but I have to say - for the same money, I think the BOSS Katana Artist is the better sounding amp. This amp has more bells and whistles, but the Katana Artist sounds better.
Thanks! I actually haven't had the opportunity to play the Katana Artist so I can't directly say anything in comparison.
I love my Mustang 3 V2. I've always enjoyed it. Now I'm looking hard at the GTX. Why would I upgrade?
Thanks !!
Have you tried using any OD or Distortion pedals in front of the amp? How did that sound?
Hello, I recently purchased this amp for my first electric guitar but I'm wondering if my amp is faulty. Since my amplifier makes buzzing static noises on several preset effects. Have you experienced that? An answer would be appreciated
Yeah it's normal
Thanks!
Well explained. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
So is this a Fender Twin Reverb Model /Emulator ?
Its a general modeling amp, but there's a Twin tone in there.
OH of course Thanks . Good video keep them comming.
Has otra demostración 👌👍
Which is better, Fender GT200 or Fender Mustang GTX100?
I am confused with these two Amps.I dont want a mistake and to regret after I use it.Thanks for your advise I will appreciate much.
@jack fossett how is this at low volumes? I just play at home. Would the volume set at 2 on the GTX be louder than the volume set at 2 on a Champion 20? I hope my question makes sense.
Comparatively to the 20 I’m not sure - this one has so many ways to dial in, it’s hard to directly compare. I do think that it sounds pretty good at low volumes though
@@JackFossett thanks for the quick response
Your playing is really good but the sounds coming from the amp seem somewhat live less so to speak. Just lacks kind of that airy push which some have called '3D' vs '2D'. Would have been good to compare at least one real amp such as the twin reverb vs the GTX modeling version to get some kind of relativity. Have heard a number of demos of the previous mustang gt100 vs various real tube amps and they are just really different. Not sure the GTX version is that much closer. However the GTX certainly has some positives going for it. Just wondering if you can do a comparative video between the GTX and something like the real twin etc.
I got the same one every time I plug it in every half hour it stops working
Thanks
There are boost pedals in the presets, which you can map and turn on with the footswitch for a solo 😊
@@gerongrahamgg Thanks!
is it better than the axe fx 2?
But you can, you can see the gtx up with all knobs if you want to just like the older mustangs
Cedric Satterfield yes but it doesn’t work well in conjunction with the app settings
You can use one or the other, or both. On my gtx50 I can see the onboard display change with my phone/app settings, and vice versa if I adjust on my amp I see the changes in my phone. What are you trying to get it to do
Cedric Satterfield I’ve done it plenty of times before, I know how it works. I just don’t think they work well together.
Hello 👋
Great job reviewing the amp
Just one question, in the acoustic preset the sound that we heard was the mic’d amp or the xlr outs?
Mic'd amp! And thank you ~
Jack Fossett can you please tell me your honest opinion about the dirty sounds of the amp? I’m looking for a amp to plug and play in my bedroom and to do some small rigs. Are the dirty sounds as good as a boss katana 100??
@@marioduarte3656 Personally I think this amp beats the Katana. I've gigged with this amp all summer and it hasn't disappointed. You just have to be willing to take time dialing it in right - not all models and settings sound good, but with some tweaking, it can really sound great.
Jack Fossett thank you very much for your help and your opinion 😉
Thanks, this was really helpful. I'm looking for primarily a practice amp that I can gig with on occasion.
How does it sound at apartment/bedroom volumes?
Glad to hear it! Very well at lower levels. Its really a great amp.
Didn’t want to use Life in the Fast lane for demo?
I’m afraid of the Henley Drones swooping in to strike the channel.
Is this a newer model? Mine looks a bit different.
This is the newest one, came out a few months ago
Sorry you had a bad experience with it -
"Who's that guy?..."
Great playing Jack, not so sure how much i like the tone, don't sell your bassman.
That Bassman will be with me my whole life!
😂😂the pedal is wearing a headband 😂

More and more I want the real thing in this case real tube amps.
I am lucky enough to own a valve amp so don't need an amp like this. Great demo though.
Ugh. Can't people demo the product? Sorry dude, way too much talking.
Ok pal 🍻
@@JackFossett Sorry dude. Having a bad day. I enjoyed your playing.
NP - appreciate it!
I like your detailed review of the amp and the Fx. There are plenty of reviewers on the net who do a lot of playing but don’t have anything to say. Keep up the good work!
Didn't like the amp. It sounded cheap.
Guitar is wicked out of tune, but that’s ok. lol.
