  • A look at the MagnaMatic Mag-1000 blade balancer. This unit is one of the earliest versions and still works great. See why balancing with a nail can't compete.

    My Friend what you have there with the stamped # 2 is the (Generation 2) made from 1964 - 1967 . The primary change to this version was that the sleeve (slide) was changed to steel - the brass design was no longer used. The magnet shell no longer has the step down cut. At this time the wall bracket was made as as a permanent mold. The way you can tell the difference between a sand casting versus a permanent mold is the sand casting will have a smooth back it will be all solid. The permanent mold has cavities behind the hub and the gauge rod mount. The earlier permanent molds had the cavity behind the gauge rod mount is rectangular in shape. I own a Genaration #1 Made 1958 - 1963 and here are the Differences of the gen 1 and gen 2 Model's of the MAGNA-MATIC BLADE BALANCER. The primary things to notice are that sleeve the cone is attached to is brass. So if you pull your magnet slide forward you will see the brass sleeve. The shell that the magnet is attached to is aluminum, and it has a chamfer at the end along with a step down behind the magnet. This version features an ALNICO magnet along with an aluminum rear magnet cap. The early wall mount cast bracket is a sand casting - you can tell if it is a sand casting because the whole back of the casting is flat without any cavities. The name plate is aluminum painted red with silver text, and it is riveted to the casting. The wall bracket will be painted orange, and the back of the casting will be silver (unpainted).

    Great video. Seeing is truly believing. The part of the video where you added three magnets and there was no real movement on the blade while it was mounted in the nail in the wall was an eye opener. Excellent demonstration. I remember as a child, my father had a new top of the line toro lawn mower. It lasted a year and then the motor was shot. The culprit was an unbalanced blade so I think this is a very important device. I think it will save spindle wear and motor damage. Thanks for the video. I also enjoyed your story about your grandfather.

    Great video! I just bought and installed a similar balancer and have balanced a couple of my Honda self propelled push mower 21 inch blades.
    Indeed the gadget is very sensitive (I have not compared to a nail). It takes a bit to get the balance just right, and needs to be installed properly.
    Here is how I sharpened/ balanced (your comments are welcome) my blades:
    1. Cleaned blades with paint scrapper to removed old grass and any labeling. Probably should have used a wire brush.
    2. Before sharpening (using All American Model 5005) I balanced blade and checked if bent. Slightly. Did not remove any material from the cutting edge.
    3. Then sharpened blades and was careful to remove exactly the same amount from each end.
    4. Checked balance once again and removed material if required from non sharpened surface.
    Conclusions:1. Probably overkill and unrealistic approach for a professional, but not for the home owner looking to protect a mower and willing to spend some time obsessing about blades.
    2. Mower vibration was significantly reduced noticeably on start up.
    3. Cut was perfect.
    And yes I hope to leave my All American 5005 sharpener and balancer to my son and grandson.
    Stay strong!

      You said mower vibration significantly reduced on startup, but how was it before and after while mowing?

    • @kenthughes3759
      @kenthughes3759 ปีที่แล้ว

      @norbertnagy5514 I can't remember before and after effects being significant with the Honda mower. However I have moved on to a EGO push mower a couple years ago. I still sharpen and balance at mid season. I don't see much operational differences before and after for balance and/or cut, as I try to stay way ahead of the need to sharpen or balance.

      @@kenthughes3759 well, if it helps at startup it will probably helps while mowing too. We have a new mower that is shaking nicely at startup and while mowing so i will try to get some kind of balancer in the future

      @kenthughes3759 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did not notice any effect while mowing. Just on start up. I have since moved on to EGO equipment, but still balance and sharpen as I did with Honda equipment.

    question; does home owner that needs to sharpen his blades twice a year. Does it make sense to spend $250.00 on that device. when he can buy a 3/8 ID center bushing and OD of what ever that hole is in the blade and drile a hole in a 2x4 a 23X64 with a drill press. for less then $5.00 it might not be as acurat but it is not bad.
