Hey Shane. What a pleasure to share thoughts and approaches. You , your channel and observationgive give us all somuch to think about . Questions to ask ourselves. Keep the good work, valuable and thought provoking content rolling. Let's hope beautiful Bella gives us a heifer calf with a beautiful stretch of white on the tail like her mother. May you, your family, your cattle, channel and its viewers all be blessed this comming year.
Great to have you back, mate! Too often people miss out on doing what they love because they're not willing to get out of their comfort zones. Of course one has to make calculations because taking such life changing decisions. You're a true example that when one is given an opportunity to do what they love, they should grab the opportunity with both hands. Keep being an inspiration to young farmers like myself who are just starting out on their farming journeys. Stay blessed!
Thanks man! It isn't easy starting out - especially if you don't have huge cash reserves in the bank! But good luck with your enterprise and thanks for the comment!
Een van my gunsteling kanale wat ek dié jaar gekyk het. Baie dankie vir al jou videos en die geselsies hier onder. Geseënde kersfees en ‘n voorspoedige nuwe jaar!
Hey Janco, Ek wil vir JOU dankie sê! Niemand is so slim soos wat hy dink nie maar julle manne maak dit lekker om die kanaal aan die gang te hou! Voorspoed en alles wat mooi is vir julle!
Thank you for taking us along in your journey. Looking forward to more videos and wisdom in the next years to come. Whats your reason for putting bulls in, in March?
Thanks! If I bull them in march they calve in december. That falls perfectly on the summer solstice which, according to Ian Mitchel-Innes, is the best time for cows to calve.
@shanecotty3275 we get rains in the karoo in autumn for a period of 3-4 months the rest of the year it's dry with occasional rain. We bull them from February to the end of April or from the 10th January to end April. We then calves them in rested camps then move them to new vegetation when we bulling them in raining season.
Ok, sounds good! Many are of the pinion that calving on green grass improves claving ease as well as reconceprion rates. It makes sense to me so it's the route I have chosen.
You cattle look great Shane well done. Please advise if your bull’s off spring are majority males for 3 years in a row, is something I should worried about?
Hi Ntyatya, It depends on where you are in your herd. If you're expanding like me - you want more heifers and it could then be a problem. If you aren't expanding but selling off weaners - then it could actually be beneficial! It depends on what YOU prefer and how it affects your pocket.
Once a mind is opened it can never go back to being closed! Never miss a chance to keep your mouth closed and your ears open! And lastly don’t try to teach a pig to fly it waste your time and irritates the pig! Some sayings that I find more truth in as time goes on!
Your cattle are looking great during this time do you supplement them? if you do on this time of the year what do you give them?.... Happy Christmas 🎄 🎉
Hi Jack, I'm actually in the process of starting that in the new year. I have already bought all the equipment. I think that there are enough success stories to show that it's certainly a good option! Merry Christmas!
I am farming in Zimbabwe in the low veldt and our average temperatures are 25 degrees celcius in August and October, low rainfall as well. I am actually living and working in England, Herefordshire county and also managed my farm back home in Zimbabwe. The mashona breed that I have has a very slow growth rate and I am thinking of changing it to anyone of the above breeds. So which one do you think I should choose amongst those three breeds that I have mentioned above.
Ok, the bit of background helps! All are good breeds but the simbras might have the edge! Just keep in mind that everything comes at a cost! I would suggest that you watch Johann Zietsman's videos and then consider a cross/composite between mashona and simbra. The mashona might grow slower but are way better adapted to the grazing and parasites. The simbras might grow faster but you might lose on adaptability and ultimately production. So a combination of both breeds might be the best approach. That's what I would do.
Hi Shane I would like your honest opinion,I am an emerging farmer and I am struggling to choose between a bonsmara, beefmaster and simbra. Which breed among the those three can be suitable for a starter cattle farmer.
I’m also looking forward to 2025, I’m bringing my 1st load of Boran heifers at the end of January . I’m in oxen market I need animals that finish off the veld.
How are you brother? This is Sidwell from Aussie baba. You sharp? 😂Your pregnant cow may be mounting other heifers due to hormonal changes causing signs of “oestrus during pregnancy.
Hey Sidwell, Thought you'd be back for the hollidays? Yes, could be the hormones - but only 1 of the other 4 pregnant animals did the same and she gave me a bull calf... So I'm keeping a close eye on her behaviour and lets see what happens. Good to hear from you!
Interesting, it's been informative watching the channel and experience African breeds and cattle farming on your ranch. That's rough country, yall. Couldn't support the large framed and demanding euro breeds we had on rich, irrigated soils we had. Cows suited for youe country hey. End of the day, y'all are producing beef to feed your national

Your cattle are looking great during this time do you supplement them? if you do on this time of the year what do you give them?....
Happy Christmas 🎄 🎉
Hey Sandile,
I only give mineral supplements - phosblock, selenium and trace minerals.
What do you think of the greg judy/zeitsman style of high density grazing with the electric wires?
Hi Jack,
I'm actually in the process of starting that in the new year. I have already bought all the equipment. I think that there are enough success stories to show that it's certainly a good option!

Hi,
All three are good breeds. The question rather is which breed would be best adapted to YOUR conditions? Where do you farm?
Merry Christmas ⛄🎁⛄🎁⛄
Merry Christmas to you too!
I’m also looking forward to 2025, I’m bringing my 1st load of Boran heifers at the end of January . I’m in oxen market I need animals that finish off the veld.

Merry Christmas champ!
Thanks Jacob! Same to you and your family. Hope you have a good 2025 filled with many Nguni calves !

Manganese deficient cows produce bull calves?
What you think Shane!
Hi Ashell,
According to the biologists the bull determines the gender of the calves.
How are you brother? This is Sidwell from Aussie baba. You sharp? 😂Your pregnant cow may be mounting other heifers due to hormonal changes causing signs of “oestrus during pregnancy.

Hey Buddy,
Thanks for the comments during the year! I enjoy interacting with you guys and it makes the whole excercise worth it!
Happy hollidays!
Bela will probably calf in Feb
You might be right - but I don't think so....
Will most probably calve by Jan
I hope so!
