DIY Reclaimed Brick Walkway Around the Workshop

- I reused some old bricks salvaged from other areas of the backyard to build a pathway that connects the barn door and side door. No more stepping through dirt and mud! This was my first time working with any kind of paver, and with the exception of a few hiccups, it went really well. Now that the workshop construction is done, I'm going to work on the rest of the backyard. This is just the beginning. Enjoy!

Before putting down sand, you really need a crushed gravel base. That will keep them from sinking over time

You did a great job, and kudos for "re-purposing" those old bricks. If I were to give you any advise at all it would be this, "wear eye protection" when pounding in those plastic spikes and hammering on the bricks! Be safe.

In Europe we lay sand with addition of cement to glue the bricks and make it stick and harder to wash away by rains. Also we compact sand with cement to make sure it wont move on its own. But california probably dont have as much rain and problems coming with that :)

@@Bewefau While I do appreciate the work, and the video content of it + the re-purposing of the bricks, that is still a pretty small pathway.. It would have been very little effort of the people pouring concrete to frame out that area for a walkway and cant imagine it being a whole lot more added to total cost.

I am a big fan of repurposing materials.
Just a piece of advice to make the installation got faster. lay all the pavers excluding the cut pavers, then once all the bricks are laid, just cut away and lay them. then you can measure more than one at a time and cut a few in one go.

Hi! So I'm an audio engineer by trade, I saw your video making the sound proof room to do voiceovers in! My bit of advice would be that sound proofing and sound treatment are two different things. Your current voiceovers sound a little boxy, so maybe add more things in that room that will deaden the room sound. Great videos!

I live in an area with ice and freezing. I found I have to touch up with new polymer sand every year, if not weeds do creep in.

Nice job! Cutting 45 on brick is not easy!
PVC pipe is not UV resistant and will shatter over a couple years, causing your to have to dig up your brick work. Gravel fines should also be laid down and compacted before sand. A good video on how to lay bricks is provided by This Old House, search for it.
Make sure you insulate that hose-bib before winter, or you are going to have a BIG mess!
Best all round handyman in the world...and you did not hammer your thumb in the "technical difficulties"! (I know what that feels like!) I am too busy trying to figure out the time frame of all the other projects you did in that area based on your previous videos, so I have concluded that this brick laying in this video is confusing me! Can't guesstimate the number of bricks therefore. But you can still "like" my comment! (Makes an otherwise crappy day feel not so crappy.)
Idk if it would work but after you finish I would put floor polish so it can look skinny idk but I will try this soon... with the help of your video

To keep your wood steaks from splitting cut the corners off. Catching a corner is what causes them to split.

I was gonna ask if I missed him compacting, or he just didn't film it. I am so glad someone else mentioned it first :) Still, it looks great! I just knew the dogs would run through the sand! My dogs did the same thing when I poured the concrete for my first water storage tank. It was hard enough, but you could see their little(great danes) paw outlines :)
he should have used something what we call here "stabilisé"
It's 1 part cement to 8 parts sand and very litle water
@@sparky5543 he said that prior to putting in the building they already compacted the ground so he thinks it should be fine.
@@Bewefau The ground, yes, but we are talking about the sand he added. Its hard to tell just how thick the sand is, but even a few inches, and it will settle some. It may not make any difference in the end, which is what I hope :)
@@mHBulldog exactly. I assume you're belgian :) He could also use porfier if it's not to thick, but stabilisé would have been the best option
I would spread some sand after the fact instead of blowing it all off. This helps with small movements in the first few weeks after placement.

And a year after the non stomped sand you used have shrinked and the bricks are now looking like a bumpy road??? Would suggest to use only a max ½ inch sand and 5 - 10 inch of gravel underneath.
Sand is to fine a material and will deform over time.. within years..
remember what I said last time you for that problem of washing them you can make a doggie wash system kinda like a carwash system and put I were the walk out of the mud run for more detail I replied to your reply to me! :P

Ben, the office you built yourself has no ventilation, your air is going to run out, you have to breathe it.
Should of used a base of gravel. That’s a lot of sand. Night shift and move with that much sand. You should only have an inch of sand.
One problem: those bricked are vertical veneer bricks, not pavers. Over time freeze-thaw cycles will break them apart. Better to invest in a cube of pavers better suited for walkways. Otherwise great job.

Thanks for the information about polymer sand! I didn't know there was such a thing. I have walkways just like yours made out of discarded paving bricks I found on the property after moving in 18 years ago. They are beginning to shift around too much. I also pull weeds out from between them. You did a really nice job on yours! Very thorough.
How did you find the capped pipe, do you talk about that in a video?

Loved the re-use of the bricks in this project. I collect pallets and use the wood for projects at home. Have made 3 storage sheds, a BBQ table and also plant pot table. Also have made 4 double planters and a single planter out of them too. It is good free wood and I am able to pick them up from close to where I live. Even had our local Ice Cream van ask if I wanted some from them as they had 4 from their last delivery of bits. Even delivered it to me as only 5 mins away from their base. Keep up the good work too. Love the helpers leaving their imprints on the sand!!
