It says he joined for the crown; but in that moment he was doing it for those around him, whom were citizens of the crown. It’s not a partisan song, not all Catholics are nationalists and not all Protestants unionists.

It's a shame that all British soldiers are tarred with the same brush by Republicans. They are only about simply because it's their job & they have to be there so that their families back home are provided for. At the start of the Troubles it was the British soldiers, and NOT the IRA, who protected the Republican communities in Belfast from angry mobs of Loyalists who were out for their blood. They were never thanked for saving their lives and this song sums up the general Republican mentality
