As a filmmaker of narrative work, the supposed limitations other content creators have talked about are not issues with me. First, when I get a new camera, I shoot video and audio tests. I especially do audio tests to see what "db" settings are best with the camera's internal amps, when using a microphone plugged into the camera. When needed, I use mostly audio field recorders for narrative projects, which allow me to monitor the audio. Again, I don't need a headphone jack on the camera. The audio tests I do when I get a new camera settle any gain setting needs. The 10-15 minute recording limitations of the S9 are not an issue for me. Most of my narrative work involves shots from 5 to (maybe) 20 seconds in length. So, no the recording limits are NOT a huge downside, and I think are overblown for my use case. Plus, like you said, they can probably change that with a firmware update. The cold hot shoe on the S9 is not an issue for me either. Because I rarely shoot photos. I certainly don't use flash when I do. So, no, another so-called "issue" is not an issue for me. In the end, the S9 is probably not a good choice for photographers in general. But, for me, it's a very good choice. As a filmmaker, being able to run in gun without drawing attention to myself is a huge plus. And the S9's small form factor works in my favor. I can see how the S9 is not for everyone. Seeing the launch of the S9 and the features I know it has, is all I need to know to make a choice. But, just because the S9 is not for everyone doesn't mean it's a bad camera or crippled. Thanks for sharing your views. You made some excellent points.
I'd actually say it is a good choice for photographers.. lol. I mean you just said it.. small, compact form factor, run n' gun.. There are some AMAZING things being done PHOTO wise on the S9 out there, no EVF.. And the same can be said for the FX3, no EVF.. And the Sigma FP, no EVF. And the Ricoh GR, no EVF. So..... I'd actually say the S9 is going to be MAJOR for photo shooters, and VIDEO shooters. Both. S9 is gonna do numbers !
I went to Adobe MAX here in Miami Beach, and Lumix was there. The big thing they were pitching was the ability to take photos and videos, and have it automatically uploaded to Adobe Express. (I think that was the program they were using in their demos.) Not sure on the specifics, but this new generation of Lumix cameras all have that feature. (Soon to come to Canon and another brand that is not Sony. I know for sure it's not Sony because I have one and I was bummed out it was not mentioned.) So if all works out, in a perfect world, you should be able to shoot what you need, and quicky have the material available for editing (in Adobe programs), and be able to post right away to TH-cam/TikTok/Instagram/etc.
Dont go putting all photographers in the same group. Heck I rarely ever use a flash. There are millions of photographers that use continuous lighting, LED COB light, etc. All photographers do not shoot the same genres.
I'm a professional photographer and never use a flash. A lot of venue I go (concerts, fashion shows) ban you from using flash. This camera will be very useful for me actually as a backup camera due to its compact for and full frame.
Liked your POV and examples. Not that I'm any x-pert, but if you're a noob content creator my advice is: start. Don't get the camera first and then figure out what to do. You can do a great job with a RX100, or a Lumix G7 or other cheap MFT camera, or an iphone. Or worse! Markuspix famously makes all his videos on 1 inch pocket cameras. And then you can decide what kind of great full frame camera you need, if you need it...
I have Sony Cameras and the sharpness is excellent. I own Nikon, Canon, Leica and Panasonic cameras. The Canon R5C, Sony FX30, Panasonic S5II & S5IIX all have built in fans which really helps get the content out in a warm Air Conditioned Office. Using the Panasonic S9 Blue Color, Smallrig Grip and Base Plate with the Panasonic Wrist Strap I updated to Firmware Version 1.2 which removed the Video Record Limits. Unfortunately I am only getting several minutes extra while recording longer video segments. No problem I have other cameras. But when doing external recording through the HDMI there is no problem. Lasted 5 Hours without any overheating. I like the small cameras and expecting the 18-40mm in Mid November. I am using the Sigma 20mm and other I Series Lenses that are compact. Battery Life is good. The bigger equipment and heavier glass I only use on special occasions. The smaller cameras are my everyday cameras that are with me all of the time. I have used the smallest Jpeg file size On the S9 for Photos and the quality is excellent. Stabilization and extra features are awesome. I agree every camera has flaws but finding workarounds to make it work for your content flow. If processing is done more easily on the go instead of waiting to process it when You arrive back at Your Office, Studio or Home that is a plus. In My opinion at the End of the Day "What Camera are You Using the Most?". Loving all of the cameras that I own but I am using the smaller cameras more. Bigger cameras are left in the Office Studio and have the Professional ones with glass ready in Backpacks and Cases for Work. S9 24mp camera I am liking a lot. Cheers!
This is the only video I have found that actually feels likes it is an honest take. My friend and I both said it’s far too expensive for who they’re pretending it’s for. I think the camera would actually sell if it was priced at 750 bucks but at the starting price of 1500 bucks the perceived value drops significantly because now you’re into a tier of user that can get much better use out of things that are already on the market cheaper.
@@Technobby It was selling like hot cakes alreadt at $1500 lol. And it's still selling like hot cakes now, with used prices. It's $1000 (pounds) some places in the UK.
I agree that the biggest con is not having a hotshoe, but off camera flash general works with a mechanical shutter, and the S9 doesn't have a mechanical shutter. I could still use it with continuous light personally, but i went to college and got my 2nd degree in photography, so im aware of how to do that, but i realize most people do not. Anyone into serious video should alreeady have a video recorder like atomos which would get them around the record limits in an emergency. I'm getting an S9 anyway as a travel camera, and as a 2nd camera since i already have the Lumxi S5 iiX. Great and fair video!
I’ve used the DJI pocket 1 and 3 since 2019 with LUMIX FF and MFT cameras and the image quality on the DJI’s match very well, using their Cine and Log profiles
The S9 is the direction that I would like to see all camera makers head. They can still have those pro bodies but having something that sports a full frame sensor that I can throw into my pocket/small bag for weekend trips/travel is a huge deal.
I hope not. S9 is not weather sealed, so one little rain and there goes your camera. No mechanical shutter is also a no go if you dont want LED banding or rolling shutter
@@dothewubwub None of those are factors for me having used cameras for almost 30 years now but I can understand how it can be for some. Seeing compact full frame cameras is what I meant when I said direction. I would still choose the slightly larger Sony options over this but the S9 is going to be a decent option in the right hands. Even with its shortcomings.
@@LatinLegacyNY I agree with you on the small compactness factor. Wish more brands took the leap and made things smaller. Even the Leica Q3 which I enjoy is not truly pocketable. The Ricoh GR3 on the other hand is, but alas its only asp-c.
This is a great take. Tbh, I can’t see who would buy this camera. It’s so badly nerfed in so many ways. Once you get just a little bit serious about content creation, the limitations of the S9 will have you flipping on eBay within a year.
The new MP4 Lite format + LUTs is exactly the use case you mentioned about Content Creators like your GF wanting a simple workflow. No need for computer edit or Memory Card transfer. The Pocket 3 and Sony ZV cameras have been well adopted by CCs and these don’t have as good features as the S9
I was considering the Sony A7C, FF 24 mp, Sony's well-known AF, and all the e-mount lenses, in a small form factor. Yes, the Lumix has all sorts of nice-to-have features, but at a significant price (once you include lenses), can the A7C compete?
Depending on your use case the Sony A7C is the best value full frame camera, paired with a 24mm f1.8 Samyang lens. The A7C footage looks great to me and I would consider if I was buying gear for the first time right now.
@@Fredo.heavyy I’m a photographer. Coming from a Fuji XT4, and it’s a great camera, but you do reach its limits in low light, and high ISO. For street photography it does stand out, especially with larger lenses. So I want a more compact approach.
I feel like this camera was made just for its size. It is convenient to carry, but the fact that it’s not even weather resistant or doesn’t have a hot shoe truly makes this a deal breaker and for it’s price point is something that honestly frustrates me if I were to own this compared to the camera I have.
@@Fredo.heavyy LUMIX S5 IIX! It’s bigger and heavier, but a lot more versatile in being able to produce the best outcome with its added specs to how I want my photos to look in any condition!
Sold my a7s3 to get my s5ii with 4 lenses, kept my OG A7r3 with allt lenses and a x100v for that small camera fun. The S9 would have been it's replacement if they didn't cripple it in every way possible
Really? I assumed this was primarily a TikTok-promoted device. In the content creation world, I have to be honest-the S9 is my favorite camera. For commercial and high-profile projects, I use Reds and other high-end Lumix models, but the S9 has become my constant companion. I keep it in my hoodie pouch on set. It’s a camera you need to experience firsthand to appreciate its value. It’s an excellent everyday carry device. Lumix post a black white photo of mine. You might appreciate the are from the device. I think there is 12 hours left.
For the point of Content creators that use their phone for editing, what about the 5Ghz connection to your phone so you can use your Open gate videos on your phone? Because of the ability to transfer your videos to your phone to edit, this would be a great pairing to increase the quality of the videos as well as the quality of life that Open gate offers. Am I blowing smoke out my a** or is this viable?
@@Fredo.heavyy I mean ya premiere is better but just saying for her use case. She could still flow with her work while she learns adobe on the side (if she even needed it)
Im confused. If i heard everything right, I actually think its for the content creator you mentioned it isnʻt for. I think one of the disconnects is when you mentioned "marginally better." I think it really depends on how quick youʻll be able to get the images/videos on to your phone. This is the convenience. In regards to this camera being for people that do talking head videos, you still have the pain points of what your gf would have to go through: transfer the files, work with 6k open gate, and color correction. And then you have the recording limits. I do believe that theyʻll remove that recording limit. Even in this instance there will be confusion because we havenʻt laid down the definition of these terms. The main problem is this: because this camera is SO NICHE, it gets lost in all the conversations because it doesnʻt fit any of the general groups that are talked about. Now Iʻll tell you why Iʻm thinking about pre ordering it: I need something that can transfer quickly over to my phone, have better quality images/video than my phone, have it graded, and be able to post those in a timely manner without having to edit them on the computer. I also want THE OPTION to create vertical videos if needed. I also want to be able to do short form talking head shots for clients. With this said, this isnʻt under the description of "videographer, content creator or travel." This is why its causing a ruckus within the video community. Aye man sorry for the long input, this is the only time iʻve replied to the plethora of videos out about this s9. Appreciate your input brotha!
ugh, same.... I wish all these reviews remembered that most people are not youtubers. I just want a visibly better result than what a phone provides in the most convenient package and way to post it to my 20 followers on Instagram/keep on my phone to look back at memories. Not one review I've watched left me answered if that is a good camera for that or not. I'm looking at this camera because it has full sensor for best quality but in a tiny body. That's a very attractive option for me, and I have an actual 9-5 job, so I will never learn to edit my footage or images in Lightroom/Premiere Pro - that is such a pain in the ass for anyone who is not trying to be a professional content creator. I actually make money from my photography as a hobby, and not once used flash for a single picture. These youtubers keep saying this camera is not for photography because there's no flash, but not everyone needs flash? I'm left feeling confused by the TH-camrs, not by the camera, which is the biggest irony of it all.
The S9 is definitely not a talking heads camera. It doesn’t have a headphone jack and has 10 minute recording limit. I know lots of top content creators who use actual cameras! No disrespect to your girlfriend or the thousands who use a mobile- they can do the job, but they aren’t fit for all filmmaking purposes, especially when audio is required.
Great video - thanks. Im currently using a Sony A7R5 with a Tamron 20-40. My work is now completely SM, so all vertical. So far this setup deals with everything fine. I shoot a lot 1080 100p for slowing down pans and movement. Im also just shooting 8 bit, as I don't want big files, everything goes up on to Google Photos for clients to share. I used be Nikon but wanted to utilise good AF and Sony has delivered there. Ive considered buying a gimbal, but just cant be bothered lugging one around. I think Im ok at the moment but a small camera with crazy good stabilisation for the odd shot could be handy, but probably my pixel phone could get me that 😅
I am a travel content creator , needs good video camera thet has best stabilisation like when I shoot in and not in post , I shoot bit by bit less than 10 minute content , I will go for Lumix s9 all day everyday
@@Fredo.heavyy Nothing as of the moment but I'm planning on getting it after a few months and I am really confused about what to get like s9, fuji or sony a6700.
@@jacobreubenaglipa5669 Me too actually I have nothing at the moment and want my 1st one, the s9 looks promising even with the shortcomings, the a6700 is still relevant today and Ive seen some good short films and portraits taken with it. Idk much about fuji other than the look and the hype.
I just keep thinking for all the dissing, no one will be able to shoot a better out of camera video than on this camera! I feel like people are going to eat their words on this one. A bit like they did on the x100 when they used to all say it was crap because “who would want a fixed lens camera for that money”.. I don’t hear them say that anymore! Ultimately, it will get discounted as all Panasonic stuff does. So I think that will soften the stance on this. But, I find it strange that videographers used to put up with so many compromises in the past just to get the best images. Whether it’s canons r5 overheating or Sonys colours being trash back in the day. You now have for under 1500 a camera that can produce the best stabilised 6k colour graded open gate footage out the gate and their moaning about an evf they wouldn’t even use anyway! I just think people are salty and lost their minds a bit. Look at what it can do, not what it can’t do. And I don’t see anything on the market that touches it as a quality hybrid. It’s like a little studio in box. Like fujis in camera raw converter on steroids.
Sony makes several 1 inch sensor cameras that cost just about as much as this one. Lecia makes cameras that don't have nearly the ability of this camera, but cost Thousands more. Those that don't need nor want this camera, need not apply.
Morning Fredo and fellow crew members… back home in Belfast after Asia trip .. don’t know about everyone else but I’ve watched a dozen plus LUMIX S9 videos by now… please Fredo we need your clarity… I guess it hasn’t been released yet… it wasn’t in the famous camera shops in Tokyo last week 😅 looking forward to more S9 views 😂 ps I’ve sold my Sony ZV-1F ! So looking to progress 😂
Hmm if the body is the most compact its because you didnt account for the grip. When you attach a lens to it then it will tilt down/fall forward so you cant have it stand. If you get a tripod it kills the idea or portability. If you do it handheld then its a given you need a cage(unless you want bad ergo or have it fall off) so again it adds to the weight. Theyre just doing trick marketing here and many people are falling for it.
Definitely dont agree w/ this comment lol. There's a video online right now, of someone shooting w/ the S9, handheld..with the 50mm 1.8... NOTHING you said happened to them lol.
@@TopshelfJunior I said "unless you want bad ergo", even stated you can't have it standing on a table. Did you even read my comment? Also stop shilling, the issues that people have for s9 are very valid and will help in the 2nd version, we're all adults here

I can't believe people shat on this camera when it came out. When i started out as a low budget filmmaker 25 years ago, I had to spend 10k in todays money to get a camera with a quarter inch sensor that could not even shoot 720p!!!!!!!
The S9 does not do it for me for several reasons...I am happy with my Pair of Sony A7c bodies along with my remaining A7s (mk1)...caviate...I am a photographer...not a content/TH-cam/filmer...thats what smart phones are for...Cheers
For what it is (a step up from phone video and stills) the S9 is a lot more than I would have expected in a body this size, particularly for short form video. Open gate in a pocketable camera? There’s no Sony for that. Excellent IBIS, decent autofocus, a camera app which apparently works quickly plus an extensive LUT/Look infrastructure never seen before in any camera system. And a lot of that will trickle up to the S5II. Would I sell a Sony FX camera to buy this? No way. But as a lightweight add on to my existing kit? Why not? It doesn’t take much effort to plan social media takes which will fit within the record limits. Plus the S9 will make a great semi pocketable for vacation and travel. It won’t be replacing my Z9 or Blackmagic cine equipment for mission critical paid work, but there’s all kinds of family and side projects where FHD is plenty and then that opens up the super zoom function especially on vacation. In the end, it’s a hell of an effort by Panasonic to cram as much functionality in there as they did, and let’s not lose sight of the fact they can always roll out an S7 one of these days and that might be the full range finder camera others are craving. Time will tell.
i think this camera is gonna do well with the trendy travel influencers who want to get a more professional look. the type of people who flaunt their fuji x100 as a fashion accessory and post on ther IG stories on a regular basis and do grwm, day in the life, and travel content on youtube. once panasonic lifts the record limits, i think the s9 will be a hit
This camera seems so poorly conceived both in terms of design (especially at its price point) and marketing that it looks like it will be relegated to gimmick status pretty quickly.
Honestly I cut out like 10 more mins for this video. They’re more red flags and issue with S9, worried about how large the lens are which defeat purpose of compact body.
You tubers are like I switch, so should you, like is a matter of choosing socks. Get real people. Photography doesn't give you this kind of income, is just a lucky few that make it.
Gotta make your own luck some times. I ended up hating making content for billion dollar corporations even though I got a solid paycheck. Now I’m all in on myself and I’m “making”money.
it is funny that you mention the convenience (creating on the phone) when that exact point is the one that they tried to address with the S9 (successfully? Not sure). We will have to see the IQ of the MP4lite and how the app works in reality. My sis is also a content creator, she uses the phone and an A1. She has a specific look, so if she would have that on a LUT she could up the Q with little added work... Maybe.
Biggest con is there is not a fan which limits the record limit. Also the lack of smaller lenses. This camera is straight from camera to platform. No editing no color grading(internal lut). Straight from camera to platform just like the iPhone you’re comparing it to. Even your audio should be in cam. It’s an all internal to platform camera. My other Lumix cams do great with audio from the mic jack. You’ll need to change your workflow and use it just like a iPhone.
zv-e1 doesnt have a fan, can record an hour, if not more. This is a software limit, not a thermal limit, there is literally a countdown timer from when you hit record. The camera is also NOT straight to platform, first you have to transfer the files to your phone...they even created a new format called mp4lite or something, to make that easier, as transferring 6k open gate would be a big file size, so this one is like 3.8k or something. You of course can still grade externally if you want to. If I were to use it like an iphone, why wouldn't i just use the iphone?
Open gate is the most overrated rated feature ever. The use case isn’t even big enough to warrant spending 1500 on this gimped camera. If that feature is that important to you I’d hazard a bet that you’d be more open to purchasing a higher quality camera for not much more
@@Fredo.heavyy I would, purely from a video creator perspective. But I don’t do short format content. I do documentary style filming. Even then I can’t see when open gate is beneficial for my use case either. If I was running a social media business the main thing I’d want to improve first and foremost is the audio quality which isn’t easily possible with the S9. Buying an external monitor to compensate for another of the cameras huge weakness completely defeats the purpose of this camera. It’s so expensive for what it is I just don’t understand how anyone could honestly consider it. The price coming down to the $800 mark would make it more sensible. Open gate with record limits isn’t worth 1500.
And like your girlfriend, I’ve worked at multiple creative and marketing companies and they only used smartphones or serious cinema cameras for any video work. A client will 100% roll their eyes at your coloured S9 which doesn’t have a good cage, external monitor, microphone and maybe a gimbal. An iPhone will be looked down on less than a coloured camera body or a full white canon for example.
Sorry man, this s9 is trash . It's not for videography, due to the limit. It's not for photography because it doesn't have a hot shoe or EVF . This is a cash grab. Get a used S5 ii , A7c , A7 IV , R6. I don't get why TH-camrs feel they need full frame . I've literally taken photos and videos with my a7 IV and Fuji X-H2s and no one could tell the difference. Giving this camera a pass because it's full frame is crazy to me. My Fuji X-H2s and even my X-S20 can do 6.2k open gate. They have excellent image quality. TH-camrs have pushed the full frame narrative for so long, people feel like they need it in order to create. Like you said your girl uses a phone and makes money. Movies both now and back in the day used smaller sensors than full frame and the love and cult following some movies have show you we do too much for TH-cam. If the content wasn't there no one would care at all.
I agree with you that Full Frame isn’t need for content creation. My Sony FX30 is amazing crop sensor camera. How do you find the focus of the X-S20? I might switch back to Fuji.
@@Fredo.heavyy it works great for talking head videos, bugs with the latest firmware that makes me not want to update . It's not perfect in other scenarios but still really good and better than the X-T4 and X-S10 I had before it. If you got the fx30 and fx3 I think you are set.
Used to think the same but now I’m pretty-ordering several. The use case is to multi-cam into a HDMI switcher using PZT mount. No LUMIX box camera has PDAF yet. S9 has no recording limitations “external HDMI”. Can even use the cables originally used for S5 OG that was also micro HDMI. AF all remote control by one person. The size/weight will help the PZT mount work great.

I set my limit at exactly that!
Bruh, $750 ?! lol......
For fairness, body with $1.2K, it will sale like hot cake.
@@Technobby It was selling like hot cakes alreadt at $1500 lol. And it's still selling like hot cakes now, with used prices. It's $1000 (pounds) some places in the UK.

@@TruVineLLC I ended up buying the a6700 😭
I agree that the biggest con is not having a hotshoe, but off camera flash general works with a mechanical shutter, and the S9 doesn't have a mechanical shutter.
I agree its something only Sony have gone near, but at a price.

@@Fredo.heavyy once you experience LUMIX IBIS everything else feels like no IBIS
Went the other way, traded in the s9 for a zve1, 4k60 uncropped and only a small crop at 120, also much better rolling shutter.
Sort of a deal breaker for me, but the S9 doesnt have proxy recording, it may be there i just havent found the option for it like it has on my S5IIX
I feel like this camera was made just for its size. It is convenient to carry, but the fact that it’s not even weather resistant or doesn’t have a hot shoe truly makes this a deal breaker and for it’s price point is something that honestly frustrates me if I were to own this compared to the camera I have.

how did they release a worse sigma fp years later?
Actually you’re right, the sigma fp should’ve got a mark 2 version
If you have an S5 or S5ii or any Lumix FF, the S9 is a fun street camera. Use your already owned lenses. £1099 from Cotswold cameras. Happy.
I always wanted a Sigma fp. The S9 has great stabilisation and without the crazy data load. No brainer!
Sigma FP form factor with a flip up screen is what they should’ve released. I would’ve bought two of them.
great honest bloke, your take on content creation is on point

I’m using the s9 100% for photos and love it, it’s for any one
Still deciding if im gonna pick it up, how the video record limit?
Sigma FP is a small FF compact camera

Agree 100%
Sony makes several 1 inch sensor cameras that cost just about as much as this one. Lecia makes cameras that don't have nearly the ability of this camera, but cost Thousands more. Those that don't need nor want this camera, need not apply.
Not 100% sure which camera you’re referencing but Sony isn’t marketing those to “content creators”.
Sony RX1? Sony RX1R?
One videographer in my country lived on S9 for one hour before cutting, probably FHD.
Flash is not good match for e-shutter.
Yea hopefully they remove the limits via firmware.

You’re right, I cut out like 10mins worth of extra content.
The Panasonic system has a lack of small lens, negating the form factor all together.

ADIOS SONY, BIENVENIDO LUMIX S9
The recording limit of the s9 is what will make me stick to my Sony
I think that too. And I liked, not a tiktoker.😅
everyone is a content creator, doesnt have to be online content.
S9 is not the hottest new camera, it's a shilltastic disaster
You might be right, what gear do you align with?
This camera seems so poorly conceived both in terms of design (especially at its price point) and marketing that it looks like it will be relegated to gimmick status pretty quickly.
Can’t wait for it to be on sale, then I’ll pick one up
My suggestion is don’t sell your cameras buy the S9 and see where your wrong. Then return it. Your welcome
Honestly I cut out like 10 more mins for this video.

Maybe, so far biggest mistake was waiting 10 + years to make a TH-cam channel
Photographers do not need a hot shoe. There's ambient light and there's continuous light. A Godox AD100 pro with a fresnel lens is enough light.
it is funny that you mention the convenience (creating on the phone) when that exact point is the one that they tried to address with the S9 (successfully? Not sure). We will have to see the IQ of the MP4lite and how the app works in reality.
My sis is also a content creator, she uses the phone and an A1. She has a specific look, so if she would have that on a LUT she could up the Q with little added work... Maybe.
Sony A1? For photo or video?
If that feature is that important to you I’d hazard a bet that you’d be more open to purchasing a higher quality camera for not much more
I don’t disagree with you.
So you think better option for open gate full frame is S5IIX?
