I bought a new tool box with a separate keys for the top and bottom locks. The bottom lock keys were missing. Many reviews on this tool chest says it is a nuisance by having 2 different keys. Now I will convert the bottom lock to use the same key as the top. Thank you again for this info!
Great video. Simple, to the point and not overly done like most videos on youtube. You got RIGHT to the reason for the video without a bunch of unnecessary lead up. Great job, and I'll be performing this modification later this afternoon on the same trailer box.
I can't thank you enough sixtyfiveford ! This is brilliant ! I've looked at new locks, locksmith re-keying, etc. Not only have you saved me a lot of time and money on my salvaged toolbox lock solution you've educated me today, and that is priceless. And I'm already imagining "fixing" a few other locks so they're "keyed" alike to save me the weight and space on my key chains. Almost wish I'd found this before I wasted all that time looking at other options but then I wouldn't know the real value of the lesson ;-) Peace and prosperity !
Quick question if you see it before I start filing ;-) (I'm so itching to start filing right now so I can finish this up lol) The key I have that is the best fit (and it's very good really except it...) only hits the first 3 of the 4 pins. It hardly seems like it's worth it but would you look for a key at the hardware store that goes a bit deeper to engage the final pin ? I'm thinking I might just remove the final pin entirely instead but the hardware store is handy and I know the owner so it would be no trouble. I'm also have a small idea / question / suggestion, maybe not a great idea but ;-) I'm pondering moving the pins around to maybe get closer to the key I have. It's only a 3 (or 4 with a longer key) combination problem so it shouldn't take long. And if I use just the first 3 pins in the lock that gives me the 4th as another possible fit in the first three slots.
+Not Here I would just pull the pins. If someone is going to attempt to pick the lock they already know what they're doing and whether you have 3-5 tumblers they'll get in.
+sixtyfiveford Yeah, locks will only keep out lazy thieves, honest people, and the kids. Good enough for running into the store and parking in the driveway or job site though. Turns out that last pin was engaged after all, just that my key slipped into it without it moving up or down at all fooled me. So I have a full tumbler set after all. For what it's worth I did play with the pins for a minute and found a combo that actually worked with my key, though just a little sticky. A bit of filing and it's as smooth as factory, or better :-) Thanks again for sharing your knowledge !
ANOTHER fantastically lesson from the guru of geardom! I was wondering in the middle if I'd need to get a tumbler pin kit and you totally bypassed that! My padlocked toolbox thanks you. Nice call on the crimp too.
Awesome - gonna try this right now! Got a free aluminum Ultima box from my nephew, no key, and couldn't find ANY contact info about the company. Just make your own key; bloody brilliant!
Thanjks 65! I have found that certain ignition keys worked in various ignitions in tractors with real tumblers, not the lawn tractor ignitions that take the little generic key. Very good tip!
Thank you! Just bought my first truck toolbox. It didn’t come with any keys and I planned on just bolting one of those hinge locks on but now I don’t need to. Just happened to find this video scrolling through TH-cam😂 thank you!

Thank you so much for doing this. I was just about to spend a lot of money replacing all the "pop locks" on our Airstream. You have made our day! Thanks Again! Thumbs Up
Thanks for the info. Saved me a trip to Lowe's. I have a toolbox in my van. The drawers will slide open on an incline. I didn't need security, just something to hold them shut. Thanks
This was super helpful. Now I can buy locking boxes with missing keys with confidence. I found a truck tool box for 50. It’s open but lost keys. Imma go grab that sucka
This is Awesome, I appreciate you taking the time to make and post this video, because I need a key for the toolbox in my truck, I was planning on trying to have a key made for it but thanks to you posting this video I can do it myself, Thank you for your time in posting this video...
The thing on the front is a dust cap, then the bump thing is called a timing cam, and those things you call bumps inside the lock are called wafers. Just so you now have the names. Now, for filing the wafers, now you have made it possible for multiple keys to fit your lock. And now have a bigger opportunity of being robbed. Great job
The DIY concept is brilliant but yes, those locks are very compromised. I would never recommend doing this. Just replace the lock.. Very cheap. There are several companies that sell different locks that are keyed alike. That said, locks just keep honest people out.
great video thanks for this. I got an old toolbox from my dad but he no longer had the keys to lock it. so now I got a great free toolbox that's now secure!
Awesome video! Glad I stumbled on this. I'm going to do a lot of these around my plce. I hate a bunch of keys. Thanks, Even though I found it 8 years later! LOL
This is super interesting. I don't have a bunch of spare keys laying around so for me I think if I gotta go hunt for a key or something it would make more sense for me to just buy replacement locks or buy keys that match the lock I have. Thanks for doing the video though.
Thanks a ton for this video. I managed to make a key for a box I just bought. I didnt mushroom over again because I had no more material left but I did epoxy it back on hopefully that holds well enough. Didnt have any jb weld
Here's something a little shocking that I learned about locks recently. That general type of lock is often used on office filing cabinets and locking desk drawers. Look carefully and you probably will see a number - perhaps 3-4 digits - engraved on the face. If you take that number to a locksmith he can make you a new key, no questions asked, without seeing the lock or any existing key. I was about to drill the lock when I decided to go to a lock shop and see if there was a better alternative. He told me about the number thing and I was immediately hit by the security implications of this for many businesses, and I said, "You mean I could...." He cut me off and said "Yup!" He made new keys for that cabinet, and I 've since gone back and got more keys made for other cabinets/drawers I have.
Most of those locks do have a key code, its actually scary how many locks have a visible code. I hope whatever Locksmith you worked with verified ownership? You shouldn't be able to just walk in somewhere and say/ask "I have some numbers on my lock..can I get a key?
@@geraldskinner63 These are basic cam lock/cabinet locks. It is incredibly easy to get into a cabinet without the key.
