    Nothing like the noise of a Chieftain; it takes me right back to 1989 Catterick garrison... Happy days! :)

    You are correct - that's the way they were 'played'. I too believe that some of the older tanks had more 'charm' to them - a time of experimentation (some good, some bad) and necessity giving us a wide variation in design and looks.

      engasal They're all allsome! And there's lots of tanks in action at Bovington this weekend at TankFest, including a Tiger a bit different to the one you appear to be familiar with.

      Just taking an interest! Was trying to work out if worth mentioning Tankfest - if it looked like you lived in Antarctica, it might not have been worth it! Nice bike by the way.

      Ta. I went to Bovington once years ago when I was in the process of trying to join the army as a tank crewman. Didn't go anywhere and I've not been back since

      I went round the museum and saw some of the smaller demonstrations (as you can probably guess!) but this year will be the first time I get to Tankfest.

    I can remember working as a young apprentice pipefitter at chilwell depot, Nottinghamshire, aged 16 in 1977. these noisy, smelly, huge monstrous tanks, along with other vehicles, would come in for service/refurb. fuck me, did they make a racket on the test track, we could hear them miles away. chilwell depot now a shadow of its former self. damned sad.

    Why are the flags at half mast?

    • @RaufGorges
      @RaufGorges  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hadn't actually noticed that before. It's the same on other days so i'm guessing (though stand to be corrected) it's not a specific event that led to them being at half mast.

    • @Raussl
      @Raussl 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      on the tank's antennas? probably just a convinience thing, since putting them on the very top would have meant to bend the antenna or put a ladder on the turret.

    • @RaufGorges
      @RaufGorges  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That makes a lot of sense! Knowing what the weather is like half the time (wind, rain, snow etc.), probably reduces some of the strain on them as well.

    Leopard tank was fast but it's armour would have felt like tin foil in a battle.
    I would prefer to be in a tank with thick armour and a big eff off gun.

      +gregg4164 Once they have completely solved the issues of the L60 in the 80s, its mean time to failure is actually longer than the Leopard 1's, thus more reliable. Still under-powered though.

    Gotta love how the Chieftain almost stops to change gears.lol The Canadian tank would certainly out maneuver the British one and be able to range in from farther away and in the dark better than the Chieftain.

    • @RaufGorges
      @RaufGorges  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Guess it's like driving an old car - "The gear's there somewhere....". The British tanks of this era were better than the earlier examples at least, and of course much better now.

      Leopards didn't have night visions systems. Besides, the Leopard had to sacrifice armour weight to get mobility. The Chieftain does the opposite. Even today, compared to Challengers, Abrams and Leo 2s, the MK 10 still has impressive kinetic defense.

    • @bert26a
      @bert26a 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fernando Cárdenas Actually Leopard did have night vision at least on the Canadian ones with the first fire control system called PZB 200, this was later upgraded in the '80's with the IRS 100 thermal imaging system. This was later upgraded yet again in the late '90's to a near 1A5 status with upgraded armour. The only thing not upgraded at this point was the main gun as there had been talk of upgrading to A6 status with the 120mm cannon of the Leopard 2. The Canadian government also didn't install the electric turret slew that the German government had. All that extra armour of the Chieftain wouldn't of done it any good if it couldn't maneuver, really a German designed power pack (including transmission) would of made it much more successful.

    • @fredsas12
      @fredsas12 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      bert26a
      Being that no enemy AP round could penetrate the Mk10's armour at that time (and even now, to most extent), maneuverability wasn't as important to them as to the Germans. As long as the front of the tank faced the enemy, that was all it needed. British tanks are heavy tanks that sacrifice mobility for heavy armour, but have long range rifled L55 120mm guns to help make up for that shortcoming too. (Also the most powerfu gun at the time as well and still is). The main drawback for them was they could not be used in the offensive cavalry role. However the Leo 1s can. But in a theoretical Soviet hoard invasion on the flat European plains, that would not have made any difference. Flanking the Soviet tanks, WHILE they were being engaged from long range by the Chieftains however would, and that was their primary role as a light fast cavalry type tanks. To go face to face against heavier tanks with even bigger guns (115mm, 125mm) would have been suicide for them.

    why the BOOs? the Leopard is one of the best tanks in the world!

    • @RaufGorges
      @RaufGorges  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It was just some 'pantomime style' role playing - the Leopard was being used by the 'bad guys' - not meant to be a reflection on the quality of the tank at all.

    Wow, I'm surprised the chieftain got up that hill! No disrespect though, it is a deeply sexy tank, but L60 and 55+ tonnes amirite?

    • @MarcABrown-tt1fp
      @MarcABrown-tt1fp 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      William Maiden The L60 currently in that chieftain Is modified to solve the terrible head gasket wear, and really bad upper opposed piston arm wear due to insufficient oil flow. This thing cranks out 1200hp instead of 750hp now but in an unfortunate pull config, which results in delayed power. Once the cheiftain gets going, it' fairly fast. (:
