- French President Emmanuel Macron may be using Russophobia to satisfy his ambition of leading the EU, said the Russian foreign minister. In an interview, Sergey Lavrov slammed Macron for adopting what he called an “ardent” anti-Russian stance. Lavrov noted the French President’s recent interview in which he called Moscow the “main threat” to EU security.
In recent months, Macron has made several statements that Moscow has criticised as “dangerous talk,” accusing the French leader of “verbal escalation.” In his interview with The Economist, he outlined his “strategic objective” of preventing Russia from prevailing in the conflict with Ukraine. Macron said that French troops could be deployed “if the Russians were to break through the front lines.”

Lavrov seems to be the only grown up in the room. It is refreshing to see the traditions of diplomacy somewhere in Europe when it seems to have evaporated in the EU, UK and the NATO chief is Norwegian. The USA has not used diplomacy for 50 years and Medvedev (sometimes a quixotic speaker) knows that Mr Cameron (unelected Foreign Secretary for the UK without even being an MP) used threats which must be addressed as in the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. As a British citizen and loyal subject of my king, I cannot see a way out of Cameron's mess without taking back his words or resigning on grounds of not being elected by the people and therefore not speaking on our behalf.
Failed prime minister Cameron used to show respect for a type of democracy but there was no democracy present in [non-mandated] PM Sunak using the life peer trick. Given that Cameron was made Foreign Secretary and a life peer at the same time means that he has no history in the House of Lords.
This would finish him in politics forever but Sunak would not lose a seat as Cameron is not an MP. What a mess! British quaint tricks of protocol allowing silly loopholes for party purposes must end with Cameron's departure and life peerages must in future be by the assent of the whole of the Commons through the Speaker' chair.
Lavrov is most probably right in surmising that Macron seeks to pose as 'Mr EU', for he cannot have a third term as president of France. A strong likelihood is that other EU leaders and members of NATO will object to dangerous escalatory rhetoric for the sake of personal gain and complain to the French PM and Parlement. This would force a confidence vote and the PM would be ousted. He is already "outed". A summer parliamentary vote would fatally damage Macron's 'En Marche' party and lead to Macron's resignation before the end of his term. This is what happened to DeGaulle. France would probably edge a bit to the right in line with non-Paris constituencies.
In any case, what does Macron mean by "the front line" in Ukraine? It is a bizarre concept which would only make sense in a declared war aimed at taking over a whole country and removing its sovereign identity. If Russia had intended to do that we would have seen heavy action in western Ukraine or at least preparation and there has been none. As for Kharkiv, history shows that deals are generally in place in the north east productive region simply because exports make use of Russia's rail network and lines laid towards Kursk in both north east oblasts have not been damaged in over 2 years of conflict. Maybe Kharkiv wants to be capital of east Ukraine -- as it was capital of ancient Russian settlements before the rise of Muscovy. It was also of capital of the Ukrainian SSR for a while.
Kharkiv needs trading smoothness and Russia does not need more land to look after. Indeed, Donbas could become a semi-autonomous republic or region funded by Moscow and Kharkiv/Sumy. Economic possibilities using this concept could speed up the restoration of Donbas to 1991 production levels and facilitate Kharkiv's produce going via the Black Sea to the west and Africa. Southern Europe could be much more important than it is now, but it is sleeping and kept down by dominant EU states to the north.
There are many variables and opportunities but none at all day by day in Kiev-run Ukraine except lives lost, civil society in collapse, yet more waves of emigration and an army getting smaller and smaller.
Further, how can Macron fail to see that Zelenskky's presidency has expired and the constitution suspended because he will not go? Maybe huge egos do not recognize the same core in people just like them.
Anybody who holds up the authoritarian Russian regime and its representatives as superior diplomats to those appointed by democratically elected officials
