I'm 57 years old and remember in the 70's my father having a huge base station in his basement. I'd sit near him as he communicated with friends all about the world. He was a Communications Specialist on submarines in the Navy and carried his abilities with him as a hobby of his personal life. Remember that this was before cell phones were even thought of and it was very expensive to make long-distance (anyone remember this term lol) phone calls.
Now having time I have the same motivations as my father, communication with the world and thus am getting ready to obtain the amateur license myself. I thank the video producer for this concise "Get Started" video and all other commentors, as this has given me a path to get started.

I'm actually licensed, well let me rephrase that, I got my license in 1984 in Argentina so I would imagine I'm not 100% in trouble if I get into the airways on 20meters.. maybe 85% in trouble? haha

I took my technician exam about 25 years ago, and had only studied to earn it. I struggled with the 13 wpm code test, but guessed at a few of the answers. Amazingly, I passed the code test! They invited me to try for the General exam which was next... so I took it. There were alot more parts that I didn't know or recognize, but I was able to narrow the multiple choice options. To much utter surprise, I passed. So I went home with a General, when I had only wanted to advance from Novice to Technician! True story!

I'm taking my exam this Saturday. I started studying last Thursday. I started with a free study guide, but it left much to be desired and explored. While it definitely got me so i could pass the exam, I'm glad I bought the ARRL book. I can skip the parts that don't need as much explanation and can dive deeper into topics like propagation and DMR. The study guide combined with a quiz and example test app has me confident I'll pass.
I don't like waiting. I wanted to take a class, but my work schedule doesn't permit night classes over many weeks. And I wasn't going to wait for February. Thanks for the inspiration KB9VBR.

I’ve never done anything in the Ham Radio world although some of my colleague were Hams. We were required to have a General License as a condition of employment. Is there a special test for a Ham License? My experience was in the commercial world. We worked a wide variety of equipment from HF to K Band. I also worked fiber, digital microwave and a gateway earth station. Where I worked for 15 years on a pipeline that job entailed VHF Mountain top repeaters and switches that allowed you to make VHF radio calls sending the audio up to 800 miles away over the microwave then back to the VHF. We could also do cross band to UHF which they used at the pump stations. Then there was many different data rates for controlling the pipeline along with phone and Ethernet. I’m retired now and bored.

Although I am a recently license ham, my involvement with ham radio goes way back. Both my Dad and his father were ham operators. As I grew up in the 1960s, I developed a keen interest in electronics and radio, and when I was in Jr High, I got a novice license. But, rather than upgrading, I got sidetracked when they started a 10-watt FM broadcast station at my HS. I ended up getting a Second Class Radiotelephone license when I was a freshman, which I upgraded to a First before I graduated HS, which became a lifetime GROL which I still have. Over the next 15 to 20 years after HS, I was involved with many AM and FM broadcast stations, which culminated with building studios for a local FM station and also a cable FM station. I eventually got out of radio, but stayed active in the electronics field.
As I approach retirement, I decided to have another try at ham radio, so I would have a hobby-in-retirement. I took the tests one at a time, first the technician, then the general, and finally the extra. Interestingly, the FCC test I found the hardest was the Second Class Radiotelephone I took way back when. It was before calculators, and I remember learning to do square roots by hand. Also I had to learn a bit of algebra and trig, a year or two before I saw those subjects in my HS classes. I took a calculator to the Extra exam, but I never found the need to pull it out during the test.
One goal I have is to eventually learn CW. Way back when I got the Novice license, I got up to maybe 10 WPM. I still remember most of the code, but I never really got very good at it back then. Maybe at some point I can pick it back up and become more proficient.

Step 6: Don't bother taking the test if you have a felony record. Once you check the box, they sit on your application and never give it to you. How do I know? Because I took and passed all three tests last year and checked the felony box. I then submitted the letter they requested. That was April 24, 2019. Here it is April 2020 and my FRN shows it is still pending. I called them today and asked them about it. They said it is still being investigated. I told them it's been a YEAR! How long does it take to reach a decision? Apparently my payback to society wasn't enough for them so they decided to become the judge and jury all over again. That felony box is discrimination. I can't play with the "righteous" people.

So where is the lisence coming handy or where do u show it or where do they ask for it . Is it like a Drone that u need to have lisense to operate. Please help me out here. I meant it means comon sense not to mess around with illegal frequencies and stay away from them but what is the lisence for. Is it just educate you on how to operate and what to do and not to do. But i think all is very straight foward. Lisense or no lisense you can still use any ham radio

I am a ham and have been for 20 years or so. I had an amateur radio class in my high school. Now that I am older, I find that having to travel to take a test for licensing is a real problem. Amateur radio is dying and drying up. If someone is slightly interested in ham radio, they are not going to do any of that. Let alone morse code, but thankfully they got rid of the code requirement. I need a general license just to talk over the hf bands? What about sending you a rule book and instructions on station operation in exchange for a call sign that you are solely responsible for. Easy. Any input on this.

    Amateur
    - Pay for ham License get 2 meter only (no test)
    Technician
    - 2 meter but now add some HF (test required)
    General
    - 2 meter and more HF (test required)
    Amateur Extra
    - all the bands allowed. (test required)
I know many will disagree with me. But remember many disagreed with removing Morse code too..
Just think if we add the new one i put in, it will bring lot more people. and then they will get hooked and want to upgrade to talk HF
So let the screaming at me start. hahahahh

Yes. Before you take your FCC license exam, you need to go to the FCC website and get an FRN or FCC Registration Number. This is done for 2 reasons, first the FCC then has accurate address information in their database and second, the volunteer examiners no longer need to collect your social security number. The FRN is free and only takes a few minutes to complete. You can do it here: www.fcc.gov/wireless/support/universal-licensing-system-uls-resources/getting-fcc-registration-number-frn

    • @KB9VBRAntennas
      @KB9VBRAntennas  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Cheating is very difficult and the Volunteer Examiner system has safeguards in place to prevent that from happening. Test results are audited and inconsistencies in the process can be spotted. What would be accomplished by cheating on the exam as doing so won't be helpful to you in the long run. A better question to ask is what accommodations can be made for your disability. There are many different methods of learning and if reading and memorizing isn't the solution for you; then maybe online‚ video‚ or live instruction may work the best. During the testing session let the volunteer examination team know you may require an accommodation and they will work to make the testing experience comfortable and beneficial- but they won't allow you to cheat.

I was an ETN (electronics technician communications) in the navy in the early 1960s. When I became interested in ham radio
a ham radio club in my home town was offering license classes. At the time a ham could give the novice test. Tests for the
higher licenses were given at the FCC office in Chicago. I took the advanced test there. The ARRL published study guides
for licenses which were paraphrased questions from the test. In the late 70s the FCC changed the extra license test and issued
a new study guide for the extra test. It was utterly worthless. The FCC never updated the extra test to match their guide. For
a year or so it was difficult to impossible to study for the extra test. That led to the "Bash Book". Bash asked people who had
taken the test what the questions were, researched them and published an answer book. Since then the FCC has stopped
issuing novice and advanced licenses although advanced license holders can renew them.
If someone wanted to take a test who couldn't get to the FCC office it was possible to request to have a ham administer the general
test. This resulted in a conditional license which had privileges equal to a general license. If you have access to an old call book from
prior to the volunteer examiner program you can find conditional licensees. I lived in Illinois at the time and most of the conditional
    licensees had K9 calls

I have two (2) Baofeng UV-5Rs. I have them set and programed identically the same in the menu. I also have them on the same frequency. When I transmit from Baofeng radio # 1 to Baofeng radio # 2 it works fine however when I try to transmit from Baofeng radio # 2 to Baofeng radio # 1, the Baofeng radio # 1 will not pick up the transmission from the other Baofeng radio #2. SO I cannot hear any signal/transmission from Baofeng radio # 1. Do you think there is something wrong with Baofeng radio # 1?
The programming software are set to the same settings. I went through each of them one by one and all are the exact same. I had the volume turn up when I started this so its not an issue with the volume. I do know that when I transmit from Baofeng radio # 1 to Baofeng radio # 2 the red light comes on indicating that I am transmitting all while the green light comes on on the Baofeng radio # 2 when it receives the transmission from Baofeng radio # 1. However when I try to transmit from Baofeng radio # 2 to Baofeng radio # 1 there are no led lights (green or Red) showing on either one of Baofeng radio # 1 or Baofeng radio # 2.

*_BS. Those tests have nothing to do with anything. Someone in a particular hobby will always learn all the details of that hobby. Using a radio isn't that hard. Key the mic and talk. WOW! So hard. In reality the test should only really be concerned with the rules and regs and nothing else._*

Thank you for this video! I have a few questions if you don't mind, I would appreciate your thoughts.
Does the license have to be renewed?
Is it valid in all states (I'm an otr truck driver).
I will be watching your radio reviews but I just discovered your channel. I'm looking to purchase an inexpensive starter radio. Is this a decent choice?
    BaoFeng BF-F8HP (UV-5R 3rd Gen) 8-Watt Dual Band Two-Way Radio (136-174MHz VHF & 400-520MHz UHF)
Also adding the Nagoya NA-771 15.6-Inch Whip VHF/UHF (144/430Mhz) Antenna

The license is valid for 10 years and can be renewed for free by submitting a renewal form to the FCC. Since this is a federal license it is valid in all 50 states and US Territories.
For a handheld radio the Baofeng BF-F8HP is ok. Its a good starter to get you on local repeaters. But if you are an OTR driver you may want to consider a dual band mobile radio with mobile whip antenna- possibly one that either has Icom DStar or Yaesu System Fusion digital support as you will receive better range and more enjoyment while driving.

Most likely not. Technicians working on commercial systems back then would often have a Commercial Radiotelephone License or a GROL, General Radio Operators License. These licenses allowed a person to work on broadcast, marine, and land mobile systems, but were not valid to operate on the amateur radio bands.

So I did a Google search with City Name, Amateur Radio and their website came up in the listing. I was able to find the information needed from their website. Nashville is certainly bigger than where I live so I'm sure they have several clubs.

I think I would have a better chance of getting my medical license then getting a radio license! They ask you questions That I think don’t pertain to radio one is schematics and electronic components I’m not going to build a radio all I want is the ability to transmit from Time to time. I don’t even think law enforcement have to go through getting a radio license in order to transmit from their squad cars or base stations. The only thing I think you should have to know is the proper etiquette on handling a radio. Just like air traffic controllers as well as pilots they have a proper etiquette to use for a transmitting information. I do know that when you transmit you need your radio license number you use that as your call sign. Also I know that 1500 transmitting watts is the maximum that the FCC will allow. That’s with a license though.

I found a local volunteer examiner who holds courses in his basement: two Friday evenings and two Saturdays. We wrote the test on the last Saturday and I got 96% which qualified me for Basic with Honours (similar to General license in the states, but with full access to all bands). I watched Dave Casler's Technician and General video series to supplement and reinforce what I had learned in the live class. I also watched Dave's Amateur Extra series, but it was way over my head, so I decided not to pursue an Advanced license (the equivalent of Amateur Extra in my country).

    • @KB9VBRAntennas
      @KB9VBRAntennas  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think there is a general misconception of what constitutes an 'emergency.' Is it a flat tire or a disabled car on the side of the road? Most likely not. It needs to be a significant event where life and property is in danger and no other legitimate means of communication is available, such as dialing 911 on your cell phone. If you were to get on a public safety radio system and ask for help, you will most likely have to contend with legal consequence of some sort; so you will need to ask yourself if the consequences justify the action you are taking. I don't mean to sound harsh, but transmitting without a license on the amateur bands or permission on a public safety channel is a serious matter, and many people think that calling something that may be an inconvenience an 'emergency' is a way to circumvent getting a license.

    • @KB9VBRAntennas
      @KB9VBRAntennas  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Amateur radio license classes are tiered, so it's not a question of 'which license to get' but rather 'how far to advance in the system.' Basically, the Technician license gives you access to amateur frequencies above 30mHz with some slivers of frequencies below 30mHz. The General license, the next step, grants access to most frequencies below 30mHz (in addition to those above 30mHz since you already gained access via the Technician license). The amateur extra license, the top level, gives more frequency access, plus some other fringe benefits. Everyone starts out with Technician and upgrades as they choose. I have two videos on that: why I should upgrade to General th-cam.com/video/9dffOikvU-I/w-d-xo.html and why should I get my Amateur Extra license th-cam.com/video/zB9_oHiNF88/w-d-xo.html.

If you pass Technician, you will be able to test for General the same day for no charge.
But, if you previously held a Technician license issued 1987 or before, you can take the Technician test and receive a General license. That's because the pre 1987 Technician privileges are functionally equivalent to today's General. If you had the Tech+ license that was issued between 1988-2000, you'll need to take Technician and General.

I relay wish the people putting these videos up would understand that the FCC is only one of many that do licensing requirements. The FCC doesn't control or set rules for Ham radio. It is the ITU that does so please DON'T quote FCC rules as they DO NOT set the rules for Ham Radio

ITU regulation is codified in the FCC's rules governing wireless services including Part 97, the Amateur Radio Service. But each member nation adheres to slight variations of the ITU regulation, so in the US we commonly refer to the Part 97 rules and not the ITU regulation.

Sorry, this is going to be long. I bought the ARRL technician class license manual last September and put off studying until early February this year. Took the test on the 8th of March a long way from home and passed it. I purchased the General class manual soon after the exam and passed the General exam on the 13th of March again a long ways from home. Passed both tests the first time fortunately.
My method of study is to go through the Arrl manuals and highlight all of the bracketed test question references in the chapters then as I read the WHOLE chapter and run across the highlighted references I turn to the question pool and mark the answer after I get that answer from the chapter, not the side of the question pool answer column. I also watched the David Casler videos for that element from beginning to the end. I then use an app on my phone and go over the questions after I finish the manual and pound on that until a day before I take the test. If I miss an answer consistently I go to the question reference in the manual and study that again. This time around for the Amateur Extra I am adding hamstudy.org to my arsenal.
The $30 Baofeng UV-5R radio was a big help understanding some of the basics of Ham Radio. I highly recommend getting one to play with even though you can not transmit to get yourself familiar with the nomenclature of a ham radio.
Ordering the AE manual this week. One of the things that put pressure on me was the fact that the General manual is being replaced in July and the AE is being replaced next July. Knowing this my goal is to buy a HF radio and antenna and get some experience with HF before I delve into the AE manual studies. Hands on is the best way to learn and the fact that the AE manual changes in July next year puts the pressure on me to get this done. Sorry this was long.
