You don’t have to drill the case to add connectors. You could sneak a pigtail out of one of the vents or various holes. You could also replace the antenna with a pigtail for RGB in a 100 percent reversible way.
Fantastic production quality for such a small channel. Keep this short, sweet, and to the point style up and and I bet you'll grow quickly. Its great to see a new video on this little guy and has definitely inspired me to get back to work on my own (white model) that I picked up about 5 years ago from a local thrift shop. Is that the only board that I need to worry about for basic functionality? I've replaced quite a few caps in this thing already and I am still getting no power at all. And advice or resources you can point me to?
Hey sorry for the delayed reply. First make sure the power input or fuse isn't blown, Sony used those stupid reverse polarity power bricks but I've seen a lot of fried devices as it's so natural to use a regular 12V Barrel with centre positive. So yeah just probe the power input stage and make sure you have all the boards powered. Then depending on how bad your capacitor leaked, also check continuity on tracks that look eaten by acid, a good IPA cleanup is always a good step. Finally, the best source of information I found when I first got the set was this site : visions4netjournal.com/indextron/ The guy seems to be THE subject matter expert. I think I tried to contact him but never got a reply, not sure if he's still active. Nonetheless his blog posts are worth a reading, you'll find multiple articles about this WatchCube, and some of his repair steps.
I actually had one of these and man it was a great little TV. I believe I purchased mine from Montgomery Wards because it was on sale at a ridiculously low price. Which, I at that time I found that places like Circuit City, Montgomery Wards, etc would put electronics that didn't sell well on sale at blow out prices from time to time. You just had to be in these places in the right time -- and that's how I found my WatchCube. Aside from my 27 inch Sony Trinitron -- the WatchCube got the most use. This is because back in the day -- I worked in the IT field often had to work from home. The WatchCube was right by my computer workstation so I could easily watch TV as I worked. I also took it to work and used it in my office because it was so compact. But alas after years of hard use -- my WatchCube died -- screen would just display white. It was an incredible piece of tech which I will never forget...
I live in Japan and have been eyeballing Indextrons for a while now, but never decided to get one, because the picture always looks terrible on photos and videos. Are those vertical lines in the image visible IRL? You also mentioned they can't represent true blacks, which kinda defeats the purpose of having a CRT.
Yes, you can see the vertical lines and yes, it defeats the purpose of a CRT with their almost perfect blacks but boy this TV is awesome, not for its picture quality but for its collectible and historical value. I don't think you'll regret getting one!
@@AnalogThinker Thanks for the reply. I haven't seen it until now, when I decided to manually check this video's comments, because TH-cam's notification system doesn't work. I am not interested in collecting them, as my room is small and I have TONS of CRTs.
The industrial design of the case is top-notch Sony clock-radio! Did I miss it having FM and AM tuners, or did Sony miss the opportunity? 🤔 It’s kind of a shame that Indextron has such low contrast, it doesn’t compete in those respects against early LCDs. Still impressive before then, but I can see how they’ve become rare since.
Index CRT''s have no need for drive controls, which compensate for the emission failings of older 3 separate RGB electron guns. The color tracking will always be perfect, with one electron gun. The color would fade to black and white with a very weak tube, because of the loss of beam focus.
Hey man, I was linked to your channel from my brother in-law. We were the guys who took that big Sony TV off your hands. i just recently bought one, but theres no power going to the tube. i replaced the capacitors that were bad and the fuse that was blown and still nothing, theres sound coming through the speakers which is interesting. theres no high pitch sound or static coming from the screen. whatever is wrong with it is beyond my limited knowledge
Don't discard it, too valuable! Eventually someone will take on that project. I am guessing that most likely, someone tried to power it using a regular center positive barrel jack. I Hate Sony for that. Before blowing the fuse, I am guessing the reverse polarity took a bunch of parts on the way. Maybe the Flyback driver circuit, or even worst the Jungle. But there's always hope! Not sure where you're located but if you're in Canada, maybe send me an email and we can figure something out :)
You mentioned the ELNA caps multiple times in this video. Do you know where I can find more information about old ELNA caps? There are a few of them in a Trinitron I am recapping, but couldn't figure out exactly what ratings they have. The markings are "ELNA (M) RE2 85°C" and "ELNA (M) CEW(85°C)".
For more info on those ELNA Caps, you may want to check visions4netjournal.com's blog. I don't know much about those except all of mine were definitely dead and some leaked dangerously. For the value, you want to refer to the service manual or the other side of the cap that should show you the value. I went for the 105C ones on the Indextron as the beast is heating quite more than I was expecting.
@@AnalogThinker Thanks for the information. I searched the site and there's not a single mention of the word "elna". :( The temperature rating is not very useful without the accompanying hour rating.
