This is one of my favorite parks in Astoria, Queens since I was a kid living in the 1970s and going there to play and have Sunday afternoon picnics with my family until 1981. Great video! I love it!
Hi Lindsay. Thanks for the memories! I grew up near Astoria in the 1960's and my father used to take me to the original Astoria pool, which was enormous. The high diving boards were spectacular...
Grew up late 1950s-early 1960s four blocks from Astoria Park. Astoria a bit rougher back then, but wonderful to spend as much time as I could in the park. Glad to see a young person who appreciates it now in the 21st century!
Sunsets in this park are magnificant. Coming from Astoria and seeing these videos put an ache in my heart. Astoria was the only place I ever wanted to live - Yes - it actually was that Great. Ask anybody who lived there. Astoria 1954-1980.
I totally agree, thank you for sharing. ☺ I lived in Astoria for the past two years and now am moving to Long Island City. Astoria will always have a special place in my heart as my first NYC apartment! It is a truly wonderful place!
You should come review some parks on Long Island! My favorites are Target Rock in Lloyd Neck and Avalon Park in Stonybrook :) love all of the history you included in this video. Can’t wait to see more!!
For you Lindsay: I worked on Triborough Bridge .. here's a little story, its true ...One night 2 guys told their friend, while they were hanging out with on Ward's Island that they could swim across that short distance to the park .. in your video in the beginning you showed a map where Astoria Park is and in that clip, you see Ward's Island right across from Astoria Park. Well, these 2 guys told their friend they could swim across to Astoria Park and told him to drive there and meet them. Well .. third guy drives over the Triborough to Queens to the park to the designated spot they picked out. Well when he gets there, they're not there .. he's looking and waiting for about 10 minutes and then calls 911. NYPD Harbor Patrol responds and they find the 2 guys north of the park at Lawrence Point. What these 2 guys didn't figure was the strong current of the river at that location. That current can switch in minutes going north then switch to south. Hence, why there's that bridge with the name Hell's Gate Bridge there. The 2 guys were exhausted when found at Lawrence Point north of Astoria Park. Historical note about that location .. check in Wikipedia of the General Slocum passenger ship that sunk in that very location in 1904. Google images of that tragedy ... pics of those passengers that washed up on Randall's Island, and Astoria .... yep - there's always a story to every location.
oh .. of that tragedy in 1904 .. 1,021 of 1, 342 died in that tragedy. It is said that this tragedy of General Slocum was the worst maritime disaster of the 20th century until the Titanic.
Astoria used to be amazing but over the past 10+ years it's slowly been gentrified. Long time residents have slowly been squeezed out by incoming hipsters who pay a fortune. The whole neighborhood changed from being a hidden away amazing spot for the locals who who born there and lived there to becoming another generic hipster shithole like Williamsburg for transplants. You had a good run Astoria.
Astoria park used to be on 30th ave and crescent st there’s still a really old house there across the street and a church meet me there I live five blocks away lol just kidding
Triboro bridge for life!!!
I always forget to call it the RFK bridge 😅 I have lived in NY too long!
I worked on that bridge - Triboro Bridge ... all in all .. yes it's a very nice park
