  • This video is packed full of information, education and demonstration as I take you into my first day of training with this beautiful, 3-year, former Friesian stallion named Zeppelin. This video is also part of a NEW colt-starting video course. Send us an email if you would like to be included in the announcement of it’s release www.taoofhorse....
I work with this young, unsure, timid colt for the first time and turn him into a more confident, trusting and safe horse within minutes. I introduce my method where I focus a lot on rapport building, where relationship is the number one building block and foundation to training with trust and confidence. I’m also spending my first session with him getting to know him, assess who he is so I can better understand his nature and any learned behaviors he’s acquired that I may want to change.
There are so many important factors that need to be included and a part of a young horse’s education and new training. Especially important when they are young and inexperienced. So often young horses are rushed in their training, not given enough time to understand what you are asking them to do. This is a big problem, and a main issue I see with training in general and what creates an unconfident learner in your horse.
In my work with horses I always make sure they become confident learners, no matter what age, history or experience. Confidence is what teaches the horse to trust you and what develops a safe horse.
Enjoy and I look forward to seeing you in the comments!

Why do you impose that this horse hasn't been handled before? Of course it has. We don't use halters made of Rope and terror knots. We use soft syntethic or leather halters cause we KNOW how sensitive their Face and Neck are. Try it on yourself. Even our bridles are padded and broad to minimise the pressure on the sensitive neck. You have a LOT to learn from Europe. People in the US seems to learn everything by internet.

Cathrin Gustafsson what??? You don’t even listen. Caroline is so much about classical or European training. And the rope she uses is very soft. She’s always talking about the kind of rope she uses and it is soft. It’s marine grade rope. Also don’t ever compare her to internet, American trainers ever again because she has learned from experience and from her own horses which are the two best trainers out there. She is the best and i may sound vulnerable and loyal to her but start actually listening to her and watching her videos and you will to. She is amazing. The best.

@@sarahnystrom8517 Her voice and attitude are extremely annoying. And if you or Caroline don't want to be criticized for her training methods, don't put it out there on the internet.

Three feet behind you.. That's why they don't walk when you Mount them. They are afraid so you have to spin them. No logic at all

Hi Christine and Welcome! Wow, seriously? Shame on you for being closed-minded, disrespectful and a bully. You don't listen well either. First, colt-starting is a common term used by many trainers who start young horses, irrelevant of their sex. Second, I mention in my video that he was just cut and still has most of his testosterone. It can takes months before an older colt who has been gelded loses all of the stallion-like behaviors caused by hormones. And, third, if you don't like the way I teach and train, take your atitude somewhere else and keep it to yourself. Most of all be respectful and tolerant of other's.

We in Europe have a long tradition to interact early with horses and GAIN their Trust. We don't like the abusive cowboy tradition coming here. Treating horses as if they are Carnivores. We can NEVER be there "leader". Leaders don't abound them. 23 h/day. They know for sure that You are not a horse. We are their HUMAN! And they are not WILD HORSES. We have had ridingschools for more than 50 years in my country where people learn to interact, take care of them and their own Responsibility to to be careful and don't scare them unwillingly.

Hi Cathrin and Welcome! I have students all over the world and have been to Europe many times to teach. Horses are mistreated everywhere and while we in the US have our cowboys, my European students talk about the same abuses given to horses from every discipline, especially dressage. I believe most horse owners want the same for their horse and in their learning, stress free, harmonious and fun.

@@TaoofHorsemanship No your students are most probably not experienced people, but selflearned. When they try to be a good dressage rider the haven't got the skill or timing, so they try to abusement. Believe me. I've seen These People. YOU can NEVER be "leader". Only Another HORSE can. You are threatening the horse to keep it behind you with a spinning rope. And a halter of rope with knots. Terrorknots. I've seen Mrs Horsemanship terrorising a blind horse to submission. Horrific. We learn them by walking with them. Side by side. As with dogs. If I stop or slows, the horse learn to FOLLOW. We also use words so that there will be no misunderstanding if the horse is sold. We have the brain and Voice. Use them and horses learn. The Read US instantly. Even by smell and vibration.

@@cathringustafsson2426 Hi Cathrin! While I understand your frustrations I speak from years of experience, and thousands of students. In the end, every country and every discipline can abuse horses. No need to argue this point as we can 'agree to disagree" at this stage.
