What the western countries called a Chinese debt trap is in fact a path towards economic development and prosperity for Sri Lanka; and what the western countries called "bringing democracy and freedom" is in fact a death trap for Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and Yemen. Fortunately, Syria and Venezuela have escaped the "democracy and freedom" that the western countries wanted to bring to them.
Out of about 1300 projects undertaken by the BRI (a.k.a OBOR), this is the only one that needed a debt-equity swap. The west extrapolated it and claimed that all BRI projects are a debt trap so that China would take over. The facts seem to be very different and the countries involved seem to be happy with most of those BRI projects. Beats what the US had done in Iraq spending over one trillion dollars of US taxpayers' money to flatten the country. The US flatten countries after countries to enrich the military industrial complex while China builds helping developing countries to have modern buildings, roads, bridges, hospitals, schools, libraries, ports, airports, etc.
Sri Lanka is on the right path to development and prosperity, she has a unique strategic location which has been long time ignored. BTW, according to some, Sri Lanka is supposedly in huge debt due to BRI and cannot pay back so why then is this India-Omani group now building a $3.85 billion oil refinery in Sri Lanka and thus saddling their little neighbour with MORE debt? Logically, shouldn’t the new government stop building new infrastructure when they haven’t the money to pay back?

Being run by proven successful Chinese businessmen has far more chances of succeeding than being run by some idiots. Chinese aren’t going to let it fail since they want a return on their investment. Plus when Sri Lankans take over, all teething problems are already ironed out and get to inherit a good portfolio of clients.
